The reliable Remix pattern is a resource route whose loader launches Puppeteer, waits for the page to be ready, calls page.pdf(), and returns the bytes in a Web Response with Content-Type: application/pdf. Link to that route with a normal anchor or reloadDocument; a client-side Remix link can treat the PDF endpoint as a data request instead of opening the file.
Build the PDF endpoint as a Remix resource route
A resource route has no default UI component. Its loader acts as a general-purpose HTTP endpoint, which is a good fit for a dynamically generated document. The filename below uses Remix’s escaped-dot convention, so a request such as /reports/123.pdf matches the route.
Install Puppeteer
npm install puppeteerPuppeteer downloads a compatible Chromium during installation. The exact executable path and sandbox configuration depend on your runtime, container image, and hosting provider; do not copy a serverless launch recipe without checking that platform’s requirements.

}Add data-pdf-ready to the page only after its data and client-rendered sections are complete. If the report is server-rendered and has no late work, you can omit that wait, but an explicit readiness condition is safer than assuming that network idle means the UI is finished.

Make the report page print correctly
Print media versus screen media
page.pdf() uses the print CSS media type by default. Put print-specific rules in @media print. If the PDF must match the screen design instead, call this before generating the file:

Headers and footers are separate from your page’s DOM. Keep their markup small and verify the resulting spacing on every paper size you support.

}A plain <a> is equally valid. Content-Disposition: inline asks the browser to open the document in its PDF viewer; change it to attachment when every request should download instead.
Authentication, caching and safe URL handling
Authorize before launching Chromium
Load the session and check the user’s permission before starting Puppeteer. The browser instance must never be the security boundary. If the report page requires authentication, pass only the approved user’s context (for example, a short-lived token or controlled cookie) rather than accepting arbitrary headers from the request.

Do not create an open fetch proxy
A route that accepts any user-supplied URL can be abused to fetch internal services or metadata endpoints. Map an authenticated report ID to a URL on your own allowlisted origin, as the example does.
Cache deliberately
If a report is immutable, add an appropriate Cache-Control header and a stable filename. For private or frequently changing reports, use private caching or disable caching. Remix returns ordinary Web Responses, so normal HTTP cache directives apply.

Readiness, fonts and dynamic content
waitUntil: "networkidle2" waits for a quiet network, not for your application state. A page can still render charts, hydrate components, or replace loading placeholders afterward. Prefer a marker such as [data-pdf-ready], or wait for the exact selector that proves the required content exists. Keep the wait bounded so a broken page returns a controlled error instead of occupying a browser indefinitely.

Puppeteer documents that fonts are awaited by default. You still need to ensure that web fonts are reachable from the rendering environment and that your CSS does not depend on unavailable local assets. Use absolute, authenticated asset URLs where necessary.
Diagnose common failures
The browser never opens or exits immediately
- Cause: Chromium is missing or the host disallows its sandbox.
- Fix: use a runtime image that includes a compatible Chromium, follow that provider’s documented launch settings, and log the original Puppeteer error. There is no universal executable path or sandbox flag for every deployment.
The response is HTML or Remix tries to render it
- Cause: the UI used a client-side navigation and Remix treated the endpoint as route data.
- Fix: use
<a href>or<Link reloadDocument>, and verify the response hasContent-Type: application/pdf.
The PDF is blank or missing late content
- Cause: printing began before client rendering, an API call failed, or the selector wait timed out.
- Fix: inspect the page response and console, wait for a readiness marker, and make failures visible in the loader rather than printing a loading shell.
Colors or images disappear
- Cause: print CSS suppresses backgrounds, assets are blocked, or the page uses screen-only rules.
- Fix: set
printBackground: true, check asset permissions, and chooseemulateMediaType("screen")only when screen styling is the intended output.
Requests hang under load
- Cause: launching a fresh browser for every request is expensive, or pages wait forever on third-party resources.
- Fix: enforce navigation and selector timeouts, close every browser in
finally, limit concurrent jobs, and consider a controlled browser pool only after measuring memory and isolation in your deployment.
Operational choices
One browser per request
The sample is easiest to reason about and isolates state, but startup adds latency and memory use. It is suitable for low or moderate traffic when correctness matters more than throughput.
Reuse a browser process
Keeping a browser process alive can reduce startup cost. Create a fresh page for each job, clear cookies and storage when appropriate, cap concurrency, and recycle the process after crashes or prolonged growth. Treat this as an operational design, not a drop-in universal setting.

Queue long jobs
For large reports or bursts, return a job identifier and generate the PDF in a worker. Store the result behind an authenticated download route. This prevents a web request from holding a serverless or HTTP worker open while Chromium renders.

- Run the route on a Node-compatible runtime that can execute Chromium.
- Confirm the deployed image contains browser dependencies and fonts.
- Set navigation, selector and overall request timeouts.
- Authorize the report before opening a page.
- Use an allowlisted origin rather than a user-provided URL.
- Return the correct content type and disposition.
- Close the browser in a
finallyblock, including error paths. - Test long tables, page breaks, images, fonts, print backgrounds and both authenticated and unauthenticated requests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I generate a PDF in a Remix action instead of a loader?
Yes. A resource route loader is the natural read-only endpoint, but Remix actions also return ordinary Web Responses when a POST workflow is required. Keep authorization and the same PDF headers.
Why does my PDF have different pagination in production?
Chromium version, installed fonts, viewport, CSS media type and available assets can differ between environments. Pin your runtime image where possible and test the deployed renderer, not only local development.
Should I use a data URL for the PDF?
Usually no. Returning the bytes from the resource route lets the browser stream or download the file and avoids embedding large documents in client-side state.
