If you already have a PNG or JPEG screenshot and need those exact pixels in a PDF, first save the screenshot, then use an image-capable print or PDF-export tool. For repeatable scripts, keep screenshot capture and PDF printing as separate operations.
Choose the output you actually need

Printing a page to PDF is not the same as placing screenshot pixels into a PDF. Print engines can change page breaks, omit screen-only elements, or apply print styles. A screenshot preserves appearance but can become difficult to read when a long page is scaled onto paper.
Save a web page as a PDF in Chrome
- Open the page in Chrome desktop.
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on macOS. Chrome documents these shortcuts and the destination selector in its Print from Chrome help.
- In the print preview, choose a PDF destination such as Save as PDF. On some systems the wording or printer list differs by Chrome version and operating system.
- Set the layout, paper size, scale, margins, page range, and whether backgrounds are printed. Inspect the preview for clipped columns, missing backgrounds, and unexpected blank pages.
- Select Save, choose a folder and filename, then open the resulting PDF to check every page.
Chrome’s preview is authoritative for the output. A page that looks correct in a browser tab can be different when its print CSS, fixed elements, or responsive breakpoints are applied.
Windows: Microsoft Print to PDF or Save as PDF
- Open the page and press Ctrl+P.
- Select Microsoft Print to PDF or a browser destination named Save as PDF.
- Choose Print, select a destination folder, and save.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guide describes these Windows paths and notes that labels vary. On older Windows installations, Chrome may provide Save as PDF even when Microsoft Print to PDF is unavailable.

macOS: Save as PDF from the print dialog
- Open the page and press Command+P.
- In the macOS print dialog, open the PDF menu.
- Choose Save as PDF, set the filename and location, and save.
The same CFPB guidance covers this macOS route. If the browser shows its own preview first, continue to the system dialog or use the browser’s PDF destination when offered.
Firefox: control destination, layout, and backgrounds
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Print.
- Under Destination, select Save to PDF.
- Review orientation, pages, paper size, scale, margins, headers and footers, and background graphics.
- Use Simplified format when it is available and you want article text without surrounding navigation. Mozilla notes that Simplified format disables printed backgrounds.
- Click Print, choose a location, and verify the saved file.
Mozilla’s Firefox printing documentation warns that web pages can be set up to appear differently on paper than on screen. Always inspect the preview rather than assuming a visual match.
When you mean an existing screenshot image
Capture a full page in Firefox
- Open the page, then open the Firefox page-actions menu or right-click the page.
- Choose Take Screenshot.
- Select Save full page for the entire scrollable page, or Save visible for only the current viewport.
- Save the resulting PNG image.
Mozilla documents these choices in Take screenshots in Firefox. Firefox Developer Tools also provide full-page capture that includes off-screen content, as described in the Firefox Source Docs.
Put the image into a PDF
Open the saved PNG or JPEG in an image viewer or operating-system workflow that accepts image files, choose its print or export-to-PDF command, select paper size and orientation, and save. Menus differ across Windows, macOS, Linux distributions, and viewer versions, so there is no single universal sequence. Before exporting, choose whether the image should fill one page, be centered at its native size, or be split across pages. A very tall screenshot may be unreadable if reduced to one sheet; splitting it or using a larger paper size preserves legibility.

Prevent a PDF from cutting off the page
- Check print preview: look for horizontal clipping, orphaned headings, and blank pages.
- Change orientation: landscape often fits wide tables and dashboards.
- Reduce scale modestly: a small reduction can prevent clipping; excessive reduction makes text hard to read.
- Adjust margins: narrow margins create more usable width, but respect your printer or PDF viewer’s minimums.
- Choose a sensible paper size: Letter and A4 produce different page breaks.
- Enable backgrounds only when needed: backgrounds increase visual fidelity but may consume more ink when printed.
- Use page ranges: exclude advertisements, navigation, or unrelated sections when the print preview reveals them.
Automate screenshots and PDFs with Chrome Headless
Chrome Headless treats screenshot output and PDF output as separate render operations. The Chrome for Developers command-line reference documents the following patterns (the reference was updated 2024-10-21 UTC):
Save a screenshot image
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com/This writes an image, not a PDF. Use a full-page or viewport configuration appropriate to your Chrome version and page.
Print the page directly to PDF
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf https://example.com/The documented flag saves a PDF named output.pdf in the current working directory. It renders the page for printing; it does not embed screenshot pixels. Add a timeout when a page is still loading:
chrome --headless --timeout=10000 --print-to-pdf https://example.com/Flag names and header/footer options can change between Chrome releases; consult the current reference when moving a script between environments.

The PDF is blank
Wait for the page to finish loading, retry without a restrictive page range, and check whether the site requires authentication or blocks automated rendering. In Headless Chrome, increase --timeout. For an image workflow, open the source PNG or JPEG first to confirm the capture itself is not blank.

Content is missing
Print CSS may hide navigation, backgrounds, or screen-only widgets. Try enabling backgrounds, disabling Simplified format, or capture the visible/full page as an image instead. For dynamic pages, wait for content before capture or use a selector-based wait in an automation tool.
The page is cut off
Use landscape orientation, reduce scale slightly, adjust margins, or select a larger paper size. For a screenshot PDF, avoid shrinking a very tall image onto one page; split it across pages.
Fonts, images, or colors differ
Print engines can apply alternate styles and browsers may delay web fonts or lazy images. Confirm the preview, allow the page to finish loading, and capture after required assets appear. A screenshot preserves the rendered appearance but remains raster content.
The automated command fails
Verify that the Chrome executable is on your path, quote URLs containing shell characters, and check the installed version’s supported flags. Use a writable working directory and inspect the process exit code and generated filename.

Which workflow should you use?
- Choose browser print-to-PDF for searchable text, selectable links, compact documents, and normal reports.
- Choose screenshot-then-PDF when visual fidelity matters more than selectable text or when you must preserve exactly what was on screen.
- Choose Headless Chrome for repeatable local jobs, while remembering that screenshot and PDF flags produce different output types.
- Choose an API when you need server-side capture, consent cleanup, retries, webhooks, bulk URLs, or an MCP connection for AI agents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot PDF contain selectable text?
Usually no. A PDF made from a PNG or JPEG contains raster pixels; use browser print-to-PDF when selectable text and links matter.
Can I save only selected pages from a web page?
Yes. In print preview, enter a page range after reviewing the generated page numbers. The exact field label depends on the browser and operating system.
