The simplest free method is to open the screenshot in an image editor already on your computer and export a new copy as JPEG/JPG. On Windows, use Paint; on macOS, use Preview. On a phone, use an editor that offers JPEG export or transfer the image to a computer. Keep the original file until you have checked the converted copy.
Convert a screenshot to JPG on Windows
Using Paint
- Right-click the screenshot and choose Open with > Paint. You can also open Paint first and use File > Open.
- Choose File > Save as.
- Select JPEG picture, JPG, or the JPEG option shown in the file-type list.
- Choose a different name or folder if you want to preserve the original PNG.
- Select Save, then check that the new filename ends in
.jpgor.jpeg.
Paint creates a new JPEG copy. The exact wording of the file-type menu can vary between Windows editions, so rely on the format selector rather than the filename alone.
Capturing a new screenshot with Snipping Tool
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Snipping Tool. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S, choose a rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip, and select the notification or Snipping Tool window that appears. Microsoft describes the capture as being copied into Snipping Tool, where it can be edited, saved, and shared. Save the capture first, then open that file in Paint and use the JPEG export steps above.

If you use Windows + Print Screen, Windows commonly stores the PNG in Pictures > Screenshots. That PNG still needs to be exported as JPEG when an upload form requires JPG.

Convert a screenshot to JPG on a Mac
Using Preview
- Double-click the screenshot to open it in Preview. If another app opens it, Control-click the file and choose Open With > Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- Set Format to JPEG if that option is available.
- Choose the destination and filename, then select Save.
Preview is a free macOS utility suitable for cropping and editing screenshots. Labels and available export settings differ by macOS version. If your version does not show JPEG in the export format list, use another free image editor rather than merely changing the extension.
Convert a screenshot on iPhone or iPad
Apple places screenshots in the Photos app under Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. Screenshot preview, editing, and sharing controls differ between iOS 26 and iOS 18 or earlier.
- Open Photos and select the screenshot.
- Use Share to send it to an installed image editor that explicitly offers Export JPEG, Save as JPEG, or Save a copy with a JPEG format choice.
- Save the exported copy to Photos or Files, depending on what the editor provides.
Photos does not provide a universally documented “Save as JPG” command across iPhone and iPad versions. If no editor on the device offers JPEG export, send the screenshot to a Mac or Windows computer and use Preview or Paint. Keep the original, especially when the screenshot contains small text or when you may need to crop it again.

Convert a screenshot on Android
Android menus vary by manufacturer, gallery application, and app version, so there is no single reliable path for every phone.
- Open the screenshot in the phone’s Gallery, Photos, or file manager.
- Look for Edit, Export, or Save a copy.
- Choose JPEG or JPG in the format selector, if the editor provides one.
- Save to a new filename and verify the resulting extension.
If the phone’s editor has no JPEG option, transfer the file to a computer and use the Windows or Mac workflow. Avoid uploading a screenshot containing passwords, identification documents, private messages, or customer data to an unfamiliar online converter.
Check that the conversion really produced a JPEG
Changing image.png to image.jpg in a file manager changes only the label. It does not convert the encoded image. Use the editor’s export or Save As command, then verify the file type in the operating system’s details panel or by opening it in an image viewer.

- Windows: right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Type of file.
- macOS: select the file and press Command-I to view its kind and extension.
- Phones: open the file’s details screen in Files or the gallery app and confirm that it reports JPEG/JPG.
JPEG is a lossy format. The exported appearance and file size depend on the screenshot content and the quality setting selected by the editor. There is no universal percentage reduction. Fine text, interface lines, and gradients can show compression artifacts, so inspect the copy at 100% before deleting the original.

Troubleshooting
JPEG is not listed
The app may be using an export dialog rather than Save As, or that version may not support JPEG output. Try Paint on Windows, Preview on Mac, or a different local editor. Do not force the conversion by renaming the extension.
The file still opens as PNG
Check the file-type selector and the file’s properties. If the original was renamed instead of exported, restore the original extension and perform a real export.

Text looks blurry
JPEG compression can soften high-contrast interface text. Export at the editor’s highest available quality, avoid repeatedly opening and resaving the JPEG, and retain the original PNG for archival or future edits.
A transparent background became solid
JPEG does not preserve transparency. Place the screenshot on the intended background before exporting, or keep a PNG copy when transparent pixels matter.

The converted file is rejected by an upload form
Confirm that the file is actually JPEG, not just named with a JPG extension. Check the form’s maximum dimensions and file-size rules, then export a new copy at an appropriate quality or resolution. The exact limits belong to the destination service.

You need to convert many files
A desktop editor with batch export can be more efficient than repeating a dialog manually. Before processing a folder, test one image and confirm the output format, quality, naming pattern, and destination.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are JPG and JPEG different image formats?
No. JPG and JPEG identify the same JPEG image format; the three-letter .jpg extension is simply common on systems that historically used three-letter extensions.
Can I preserve a screenshot’s transparency in JPG?
No. JPEG has no transparency channel. Use PNG for transparent areas or flatten the image onto the background you need before exporting.
Should I delete the original PNG after conversion?
Keep it until the JPG has passed the destination’s format, size, and appearance checks. The PNG remains useful for lossless editing and future exports.
