1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo convert a React component to a Web Component, keep the React component and wrap it in a browser-native custom element. The element—such as <profile-card>—creates a React root when connected, passes inputs into the component, translates React callbacks into DOM events, and unmounts the root when removed. This is an integration wrapper, not an automatic rewrite of JSX.
What the conversion creates
A Web Component is a browser-defined custom element that can be used in HTML and by frameworks other than React. An autonomous custom element is a JavaScript class extending HTMLElement, registered with customElements.define(). React renders inside that element’s DOM; the custom element provides the boundary for inputs, events, styles, and lifecycle.
This approach is useful when you want to make an existing React component consumable from plain HTML or another framework. The wrapper does not remove the React runtime dependency: the page still needs the code that defines the element and loads React.
Build a React-backed custom element
The following teaching example exposes a ProfileCard component as <profile-card>. It uses a JavaScript property for profile data and emits a browser event when the component reports a selection.

import React from 'react';
import { createRoot } from 'react-dom/client';
import ProfileCard from './ProfileCard.js';
class ProfileCardElement extends HTMLElement {
connectedCallback() {
if (this._root) return;
const mount = document.createElement('div');
this.append(mount);
this._root = createRoot(mount);
this._render();
}
disconnectedCallback() {
this._root?.unmount();
this._root = undefined;
}
set profile(value) {
this._profile = value;
this._render();
}
get profile() {
return this._profile;
}
_render() {
if (!this._root) return;
this._root.render(
<ProfileCard
profile={this._profile}
onSelect={(detail) => {
this.dispatchEvent(new CustomEvent('profile-select', {
detail,
bubbles: true,
composed: true,
}));
}}
/>
);
}
}
customElements.define('profile-card', ProfileCardElement);
Register the definition once, in code that runs before consumers use the tag. Custom-element names must include a hyphen; lowercase hyphenated names such as profile-card are the conventional choice. The example is illustrative rather than production-ready: it does not observe attributes, handle every property-assignment timing case, or define a complete event contract.
Choose how consumers provide inputs
Make an explicit contract for every exposed React prop. HTML attributes are strings and work well for simple declarative configuration, such as a label or display mode. JavaScript properties can carry objects, arrays, booleans, and other rich values; assign them on the element instance rather than trying to encode them as attributes.

| Input form | Best suited to | Consumer example |
|---|---|---|
| Attribute | String configuration visible in markup | <profile-card theme="compact"> |
| Property | Objects and other JavaScript values | element.profile = { name: 'Ari' }; |
In the wrapper, implement attribute parsing and declare observedAttributes plus attributeChangedCallback() for attributes that should trigger updates. For properties, account for consumers assigning a value before the element is connected: preserve that value and render it after the React root is created.
React’s custom-element behavior also depends on the host React version. React’s current custom-element guide says JSX values for custom elements are passed as attributes by default, while React 19 documents a more complete strategy: on the client, a prop matching a property on the custom-element instance is assigned as a property; otherwise React uses an attribute. For server rendering, React 19 emits primitive values such as strings, numbers, and true as attributes, while non-primitives and false are omitted. Check the version and rendering mode used by the consuming application rather than assuming an object prop will cross the boundary intact. See React’s custom HTML elements documentation and the React 19 release notes.

Translate React callbacks into DOM events
A callback prop such as onSelect is part of React’s component API; plain HTML consumers need a DOM event instead. Dispatch a CustomEvent from the custom element and put the documented payload in event.detail. Decide deliberately whether the event bubbles and crosses a shadow boundary (composed), and preserve the event’s exact case and hyphens.
For example, a consumer can listen with element.addEventListener('profile-select', handler). If the element is consumed by another React application, React’s custom-element docs describe listening through an on-prefixed JSX prop; event names remain case-sensitive. Document the event name, payload shape, and propagation behavior as part of the element’s public interface.

Handle connection, removal, and server rendering
Use the custom-element lifecycle to keep React’s ownership of the DOM correct. Create the React root in connectedCallback(), render after inputs are available, and call root.unmount() in disconnectedCallback(). The example guards against creating multiple roots while connected and clears its reference after unmounting, so a later reconnection can create a fresh root. React explains that a root owns its container and that root.unmount() detaches React from it in the createRoot reference.
createRoot() is for client rendering. If the integration delivers React-generated server markup that should be reused, React provides hydrateRoot() instead; the server/client setup must match the markup. Decide this based on the deployment’s SSR requirements, not simply because the wrapper is a custom element.

Decide whether to use Shadow DOM
Shadow DOM is optional. Render into a regular child node when the host page should be able to style and inspect the rendered DOM. Use a shadow root when style or DOM encapsulation is part of the component’s contract, and plan explicitly how styles will be supplied inside it. Web Components can combine custom elements, Shadow DOM, and templates as needed; one does not require the others. See MDN’s Web Components overview.
For broad browser compatibility, prefer an autonomous element extending HTMLElement. Customized built-in elements extend an existing native element, but MDN notes that Safari does not plan to support them. MDN’s custom-elements guide covers registration and lifecycle callbacks.
Quick Recap
Production checklist
- Use a unique, lowercase, hyphenated element name and register it once.
- Define which inputs are string attributes and which are JavaScript properties.
- Handle property assignment before connection and update React when supported attributes or properties change.
- Specify every emitted event’s exact name,
detailpayload, and bubbling/composed behavior. - Unmount the React root on disconnect and verify behavior when the element reconnects.
- Choose light DOM or Shadow DOM based on the styling and encapsulation contract.
- Check the host React version, browser requirements, bundling, and whether deployment needs client rendering or SSR hydration.
