To convert a QR code image into a URL, decode the image with a QR reader, read the payload as text, and then verify that the result is an actual web address. If the decoded text begins with a scheme such as https://, it is a URL you can copy or open. A QR code may instead contain an email address, contact record, Wi-Fi details, payment data, or application-specific text, so decoding and URL validation are separate steps.
Fastest method: upload the saved image in a browser
This works when the QR code is already saved as a screenshot, photo, downloaded image, or document export. You do not need a second phone.
- Open ZXing Decoder Online in your browser.
- Choose the option to upload an image file, or provide the image URL if the picture is hosted online.
- Start the decode operation.
- Read the returned text before opening anything.
- If it is a complete address beginning with
https://(or another scheme you intentionally expect), copy it and check the domain spelling.
The decoder extracts the payload that was encoded in the QR symbol. It cannot infer a destination that was never stored in the code. A URL such as https://example.com/path is different from plain text such as example.com/path; the scheme makes the value unambiguous to readers and applications.
Check the domain before visiting
- Look for misspellings, extra hyphens, substituted letters, and unexpected subdomains.
- Confirm that the scheme is what you expect, normally
https://. - Copy the raw decoded value into a text field first if the reader offers a preview.
- Do not enter credentials or payment information until the destination is independently trusted.
Scan a QR code from a saved image on iPhone or iPad
On a recent iPhone or iPad, open the saved picture in Photos. When the device recognizes the QR symbol, use the QR or Live Text recognition control and review the detected value. Apple documents the action this way: “Hold your device so that the QR code appears, then tap the link to open the content.” A payload can be a URL or an email address, so inspect the text before tapping.

If the QR code is displayed live on another screen, open Camera or Code Scanner, point the device at the symbol, and tap the notification or link that appears. This live-camera workflow is different from decoding a file already stored in Photos.
Scan a saved QR image on Android
Android behavior varies by phone and gallery app. Open the image and look for a built-in QR, Lens, or “scan” action. If your gallery has no decoder, use a barcode-scanning application or a developer library.
For developers: Google ML Kit
Google ML Kit Barcode Scanning recognizes QR codes in an image and returns the decoded data, including URL values. Pass the bitmap or image buffer to the barcode scanner, iterate over the returned barcodes, and read each barcode’s raw value. Treat that value as untrusted text until you verify its scheme and domain.
For open-source Java code: ZXing
ZXing’s QRCodeReader detects and decodes a QR code in an image and returns the encoded content. Your application should handle the decoder’s failure classes rather than assuming every image contains a readable code.

What the decoded result can contain
ZXing notes that the most common barcode use is encoding URL text such as https://google.com/m. QR payloads are not limited to links, however. The same image can encode:
- An email address or an email action.
- Contact information such as a name and phone number.
- Wi-Fi or payment information.
- Plain text, an app-specific command, or another structured record.
If the result is not a URL, preserve it as text instead of forcing it into a browser address. An email value, for example, should be handled by an email application; contact data should be reviewed before importing.

For privacy-sensitive material, an on-device decoder avoids uploading the picture to a third party. An online decoder is convenient for a desktop file but should not be used blindly for private documents.
Improve a QR image that will not decode
No code found
Crop tightly around one QR symbol while keeping all three large finder squares visible. If several codes appear in one picture, crop and decode them one at a time unless your software explicitly supports multi-code detection.

Blur, glare, or low resolution
Use the original photo or screenshot rather than a compressed copy. Remove reflections, retake the picture without glare, and enlarge the image with a method that does not add heavy smoothing. A QR reader needs a sharp boundary between the modules and their background.
Format or checksum error
Try a higher-quality source image or a second decoder. ZXing documents distinct NotFoundException, FormatException, and ChecksumException cases. A not-found error generally means the symbol could not be located; a format error indicates that the encoded structure could not be interpreted; a checksum error means the recovered data failed its integrity check.
The image contains a design overlay
Logos, rounded modules, color effects, and heavy perspective can reduce the readable area. Return to the cleanest available source, straighten the image, and avoid cropping away the quiet margin around the code.
Verify and use the URL safely
- Copy the decoded text into a plain text field so you can inspect every character.
- Confirm the scheme, such as
https://, and remove no characters accidentally. - Read the registrable domain from right to left before the first slash. Be especially careful with look-alike letters and unexpected country-code endings.
- Compare the address with the context in which the QR code appeared. A code printed by a business should normally lead to a domain associated with that business.
- Open the address only after those checks. If it requests a login, payment, or download that you did not expect, stop and verify through a separate channel.
A QR image is only a transport container. Even a correctly decoded URL can redirect elsewhere or lead to a malicious site, so the visual appearance of the code is not proof that its destination is safe.

Why did my scanner show text instead of a link?
The QR code encoded a non-URL payload. It may be an email address, contact record, Wi-Fi data, payment information, plain text, or an application-specific value.
Is it safe to open the link shown by a QR scanner?
Treat the decoded value as untrusted data. Check the scheme and domain for spelling and context before opening, and stop if the destination requests unexpected credentials, payment, or downloads.
What should I do when an image has multiple QR codes?
Crop the image to one symbol at a time unless your decoder explicitly supports multiple detections. Keep each code’s three finder squares and surrounding margin in the crop.
