You can convert a PDF to JPG or PNG without uploading it if the browser tool renders the file on your device and does not send its contents to a server. Select the PDF, render its pages in the browser, choose an image format and resolution, then download the images. A local file picker alone does not guarantee privacy: the page’s code determines what happens after you select the file.
How browser-based PDF-to-image conversion works
A browser app can read a file you choose through a file input or drag-and-drop. It then uses a PDF renderer, such as PDF.js, to draw each page and exports the rendered result as an image. The File API enables access to user-supplied files; it does not establish that a particular website keeps them on your device. See MDN’s File API documentation.
This makes a page image, not an extraction of pictures embedded in the PDF. The result shows the visible page—including text and layout—as an image. It is not searchable text, and converting a scan does not perform OCR.

Steps to convert a PDF to JPG or PNG without uploading
- Choose a tool that processes files locally. Use a browser converter whose privacy documentation explicitly says the conversion happens on your device, or use a trusted local HTML/JavaScript tool. A site’s file picker is not proof that its code avoids sending the document elsewhere.
- Select or drop in the PDF. The browser can make a file available to the page after you choose it. For sensitive documents, check the tool’s privacy documentation; where practical, inspect network activity or use a trusted offline implementation.
- Render the pages. The tool uses a PDF renderer such as PDF.js to draw each page. PDF.js is designed for browser PDF rendering, but support for PDF features varies by browser and version. Its FAQ describes compatibility considerations.
- Choose the image format and scale. Select PNG for lossless output, or JPEG (often labeled JPG) for a lossy, often smaller image. If available, adjust the render scale or resolution to balance detail against file size and processing demand.
- Download the images. Depending on the tool, pages may be downloaded individually or packaged together. Check the tool’s options rather than assuming it offers a ZIP or batch download.
No universal page-count threshold guarantees that a browser can finish a conversion. For a long PDF, render and download in batches if the tool supports it.

Should you convert a PDF to JPG or PNG?
| Format | Choose it for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Text, diagrams, line art, or when lossless page images matter; use it if transparency matters. | Often produces larger files than JPEG for photographic pages. Browser canvas APIs are required to support PNG. |
| JPG/JPEG | Photographic pages or when a smaller file matters more than perfect fidelity. | Lossy compression can reduce image quality; JPEG does not support transparency. Some browser APIs allow a quality setting. |
Browsers are required to support image/png; many also support image/jpeg and other formats, according to MDN’s canvas toBlob() documentation. If a requested JPEG export comes down as PNG, the browser may have fallen back to PNG because it does not support the requested format. Check the downloaded file’s actual format.
Choose a render scale for the way you will use the images
Increasing the render scale gives the page more pixels, which can make small text and details clearer. It also increases file size and the work the browser must do. There is no universal ideal DPI established for every PDF and use case, so judge the image at the size you plan to view or print it.

- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
MDN notes that canvas exports use 96 dpi resolution metadata for image formats that support it. That is API metadata behavior, not a guarantee of print quality: practical detail depends on the rendered pixel dimensions and scale.

Troubleshoot a PDF-to-image conversion
The PDF will not render or looks different than expected
PDF feature support varies across browsers and versions, so a document may fail or render differently in one browser. Try an up-to-date compatible browser or a trusted desktop PDF application if the result is incomplete.
The tab slows down or conversion fails
Large pages and high render scales can demand substantial browser memory. Try converting one page first, lowering the scale, and closing other demanding tabs. If the browser still cannot complete the job, use desktop software. The available browser documentation does not establish a universal file-size or page-count limit.

- Receipt scanner and card scanner with Additional features include scanning business cards directly to Outlook, photo scanning, and receipt scanning for efficient document management
The PDF asks for a password
A password-protected PDF may require its password in the viewer before it can render. Use the password only if you are authorized to access the document; conversion is not a way to bypass protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe downloaded file is the wrong format
Confirm the downloaded file’s actual format rather than relying only on its name or extension. A canvas export can fall back to PNG when a requested format is unsupported. MDN documents format support and quality behavior for toBlob().
Best Value
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
A large page takes too long to export
For large images, toBlob() is generally preferable to toDataURL(). The latter creates a full in-memory string and can cause performance or URL-length problems, as MDN explains in its toDataURL() documentation.
