A web form login is different from HTTP authentication: page.authenticate() does not fill in a site’s login form. The example below shows the overall sequence, but its selectors and post-login checks must be adapted to the app.
What you need to know before you start
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project and use credentials you are authorized to use. The login page, form selectors, and reliable signal that login succeeded are specific to the app. Some apps use single-page routing, delayed API rendering, multi-factor authentication (MFA), CAPTCHA, or single sign-on (SSO), so a generic script cannot safely assume that submitting a form is enough.
The example is an illustrative pattern, not a tested recipe for a particular service. Use the authentication method that matches the application, and confirm the target page is showing its protected content before saving a PDF.
Log in, open the protected page, and save the PDF
Replace the example host, selectors, and readiness checks with those used by your app. The example assumes a form submission causes navigation and that networkidle2 is a suitable wait condition for the report. Neither assumption is universal.

The code uses Puppeteer’s locator API, so check it against the Puppeteer version installed in your project. Current API documentation surfaced for version 25.12.0, while the PDF and cookie guides cited here are under the next documentation path; examples and APIs can change between versions.
Adapt the login wait to the app
waitForNavigation() is appropriate only when submitting the form triggers a navigation. If the app logs in through client-side code without navigating, wait instead for an app-specific success element or another dependable indicator. Do not proceed merely because the click completed: verify the authenticated state and confirm that the target page contains the expected content. If a redirect returns you to the login page, troubleshoot authentication before generating the PDF.

Handle credentials and sessions carefully
Avoid printing credentials to logs or storing session cookies insecurely. Cookie restoration is an option for an already authenticated session, but it works only when the app accepts those cookies and their domain, path, expiry, secure attributes, and other session requirements match. Puppeteer documents cookie operations and examples for storing and restoring cookies; it does not guarantee that any particular app can be authenticated with cookies alone. Choose the authentication method the app supports

Set PDF size, styling, and page range
page.pdf() renders using print CSS media by default. If the page should use its screen styling instead, call await page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(). The Page API documents this behavior at Page class; the official PDF generation guide demonstrates saving a PDF by supplying a path.

These defaults and options are documented in the PDFOptions interface. Print output can also alter colors; CSS -webkit-print-color-adjust can request exact colors when the page’s styles support it.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The PDF contains the login page. Authentication did not complete, the target URL redirected, or the script moved on before the app finished rendering. Check the final URL and an app-specific authenticated-state indicator before calling
page.pdf(). waitForNavigation()does not resolve or times out. The login may be handled without a full navigation. Wait for a success element or another condition that reflects the app’s actual behavior instead.- The report is blank or incomplete. Navigation readiness does not always mean the report’s data has rendered. Wait for a report-specific selector or a known rendering condition before creating the PDF.
- Colors, backgrounds, or layout differ from the browser view. PDF generation uses print media by default. Use
emulateMediaType('screen')for screen styling, enableprintBackgroundfor backgrounds, or adjust the page’s print CSS. - The output file is not where expected. Check the path passed as
path; a relative path is resolved from the process’s current working directory. - PDF creation times out. The documented default timeout is 30,000 ms. Check that the page and fonts finish loading; if a longer wait is appropriate, adjust the PDF timeout. Setting it to
0disables the timeout, but removes that limit rather than fixing a stalled page.
Performance and reliability considerations
Use a readiness condition tied to the content you need rather than assuming that login, navigation, or network idleness proves a report is complete. HTTP authentication specifically enables request interception according to Puppeteer’s documentation and may affect performance. For reliability, make the script fail visibly when the authenticated page is not the expected one instead of saving an error or login screen as if it were the requested report.

PDF size and appearance depend on the page’s print styles, chosen paper dimensions, margins, and whether backgrounds are included. Narrowing the page range can reduce what is included in the output, but the documentation does not establish a general runtime or file-size improvement for a given setting. Check the generated PDF for the specific app and content you need.

Can Puppeteer save a PDF from a page after login?
Yes, if the script authenticates successfully and the target page is available to that session. Then use page.pdf() after verifying the relevant content has rendered.
Does page.authenticate() log into a normal website account?
No. It is for HTTP authentication, not for filling out a web app’s login form.
