Fast answer: open the .html file in Chrome, press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+P (Mac), choose Save as PDF as the destination, review the preview, and select Save. Chrome creates a separate PDF; your original HTML file is unchanged.
Convert a local HTML file to PDF on a desktop
The procedure below applies to a local file opened in Chrome, normally through a file:// address or by opening the file from your file manager. Keep the file open in the active Chrome tab before opening print preview.
- Open the HTML file. In Chrome, press Ctrl+O (Windows/Linux) or use your operating system’s Open with command, then select the
.htmlfile. Confirm that the page, images and styling look as expected. - Open print preview. Choose File > Print, press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux, or press Command+P on Mac.
- Choose the PDF destination. In the destination selector, select Save as PDF. If it is not immediately listed, open the destination list or choose a See more option, depending on your Chrome version and operating system.
- Set the page options. Review the preview and change the controls that are available in your dialog, such as paper size, orientation, margins, scale and page range. The preview is the best indication of how content will break across pages.
- Save the file. Select Save (or the dialog’s equivalent PDF action), choose a filename and folder, and confirm. Chrome writes the PDF to that location without replacing the HTML source.

Google’s Chrome help describes the same general flow: open the page, image or file, invoke Print, choose a destination and print settings, then print. The exact labels and available controls can vary by platform and Chrome release.

Check the preview before saving
Printing is a paginated layout, not a screenshot of the browser window. Look for headings stranded at the bottom of a page, columns that become too narrow, images split between pages, and content that runs beyond the paper edges. Change orientation, margins or scale until the preview is usable, then save.

Wait for local resources
A local page can depend on images, stylesheets, fonts or scripts. Allow those resources to finish loading before opening Print. If the preview is blank or incomplete, return to the tab, reload if necessary, wait for the page to settle, and open preview again. Chrome’s official help does not guarantee that every local dependency will render in a printed PDF, so inspect the result rather than assuming the browser tab and PDF are identical.
Prepare print-specific CSS when you control the source
For predictable output, add a print stylesheet that hides navigation and other screen-only elements and sets sensible widths for paper. Keep the screen version and print version separate with an @media print rule. This is an HTML authoring technique, not a Chrome setting; preview remains the authority for the final pagination.
Choose page range and paper settings deliberately
Use a page range when you need only part of a long document. Select the paper size required by the recipient and use landscape when a wide table or code listing would otherwise be clipped. Scaling can solve an overflow problem, but excessive reduction makes text harder to read.

Where Chrome saves the PDF
If the save dialog appears, the location and filename you choose determine the result. If Chrome saves without asking, check the browser’s configured download folder and its Downloads page. Chrome allows you to change the download location and to enable Ask where to save each file before downloading; the default folder differs by operating system and can be changed by a user or administrator.
- Search the filename you entered, including the
.pdfextension. - Open Chrome’s Downloads page to see the recorded path or reveal the file in your system’s file manager.
- If another program automatically opens PDFs, verify that the file was still written to disk before troubleshooting the conversion.

The preview is blank or missing content
- Return to the HTML tab and wait for images, stylesheets, fonts and scripts to finish loading.
- Reload the file, then reopen Print preview.
- Check whether the file references resources with paths that work from its local folder. A broken local path will also produce missing content in the PDF.
- If the page depends on a script or network request that does not run in the local context, use a version of the document that embeds the needed assets or serve it from a local web server before printing.
The PDF layout differs from the tab
Use the preview to adjust orientation, margins, paper size and scale. A responsive page can choose a different layout for print, and content that fits a wide monitor may not fit portrait paper. Reduce unnecessary width in the source or choose landscape rather than shrinking text until it is unreadable.
“Save as PDF” is not listed
Open the destination list fully and check any additional destinations. On work or school computers, an administrator can manage print-preview settings and available destinations, including the Save as PDF destination. If the browser is managed, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass policy.

I cannot find the saved file
Check the path shown in the save dialog, Chrome’s Downloads page and the configured download folder. If Chrome is set to ask for a location, the dialog may have opened behind another window or been canceled before the file was written.
Images or fonts look wrong
Confirm that the local references resolve, wait for all resources to load, and inspect several pages in preview. A font unavailable to Chrome or an image that requires an external request may be substituted or omitted. Embedding assets or using paths relative to the HTML file can make the source more portable.

Adjust margins, scale and paper size first. Then revise the document’s print CSS, especially large fixed-height elements, wide tables and headings that are forced to remain with following content. Reopen preview after each meaningful change.

Converting a local HTML file on Android
Android uses a different interface from desktop Chrome. Google’s documented route is More > Share > Print, then choose Save as PDF and select a storage location. The desktop shortcut keys do not apply. The documented mobile steps do not establish a separate workflow for opening arbitrary local HTML files, so treat local-file support as device- and app-dependent; if the file does not open in Chrome, transfer it to a desktop for the procedure above.
Practical checks before you distribute the PDF
- Open the saved PDF in a viewer and inspect the first, middle and last pages.
- Verify that links, code, tables and images are present and readable.
- Confirm the paper size, orientation and page count meet the recipient’s requirements.
- Compare the PDF against the HTML at the intended zoom; do not rely on the browser tab alone.
- Keep the original HTML and its asset folder so you can regenerate the PDF after edits.
