Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo convert a Facebook post to PDF on a server, first retrieve the post through the Meta Graph API using an access token authorized to read it. Turn the response into a small, sanitized HTML snapshot, then use Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() to create the PDF. This is more predictable than printing Facebook’s live page, whose layout and access can change. If you cannot read the post through the API, a server-side renderer cannot bypass its privacy settings.
Choose the right route: retrieve data or render a page
There are two distinct jobs that can be described as “convert a Facebook post to PDF.” You can retrieve post data that your app is authorized to read and design your own document from it, or you can render a live web page. For a server workflow, the first route is generally more controllable: it separates Facebook access from PDF layout and lets you preserve a permalink and retrieval time.
| Approach | What the PDF represents | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Graph API plus your own HTML | A formatted snapshot of the fields and media you retrieved | The token, permissions, and post privacy must allow retrieval |
| Render a live Facebook page | The page as a browser can access and display it at capture time | Login requirements, consent or bot checks, changing layout, and page access can make the result unreliable |
This guide uses the Graph API and an owned HTML template. The PDF is a record of retrieved content, not an official Facebook export or proof that the post remains online.
What you need before generating the PDF
- A Facebook post ID and an access token permitted to read that specific post.
- A server-side Node.js application and Puppeteer with its compatible Chromium installation and system dependencies.
- A decision about which fields belong in the document. Common choices are the message, creation time, permalink, and authorized attachment data.
- A policy for protecting tokens and handling post text and media as untrusted input.
Meta’s Graph API Post reference for v26.0 describes reading a post with GET /v26.0/{post-id}. A Page access token can read posts for that Page; public Page posts may require pages_manage_posts and Page Public Content Access. User posts depend on the applicable user permission, and privacy settings can still block access. Request only fields that your use case is allowed to read.

Retrieve and normalize the post
Make the Graph API request from your server, never from browser code that would expose the access token. The example below requests the core text, time, permalink, and attachment fields. Exact field availability depends on the post and granted access; treat a missing field as missing data rather than assuming the post is empty.
const fields = 'message,created_time,permalink_url,attachments';
const endpoint = `https://graph.facebook.com/v26.0/${encodeURIComponent(postId)}`;
const url = new URL(endpoint);
url.searchParams.set('fields', fields);
url.searchParams.set('access_token', accessToken);
const response = await fetch(url);
const data = await response.json();
if (!response.ok || data.error) {
throw new Error(`Facebook post retrieval failed: ${data.error?.message ?? response.status}`);
}
const post = {
id: data.id,
message: data.message ?? '',
createdTime: data.created_time ?? null,
permalink: data.permalink_url ?? null,
attachments: data.attachments ?? null
};
In production, use your application’s secret-management system for the token, set request timeouts, and map API errors into safe application errors. Avoid logging the token or full private post content. Keep the original post ID and permalink as provenance, and record when your server retrieved the response.
Handle attachments deliberately
Attachment data is not a guarantee that every media URL is public, permanent, or fetchable later. Include only media your token and application are allowed to access. If a URL requires authorization, fetch the permitted bytes server-side and embed or serve them from a controlled location; do not assume a browser process can retrieve it unauthenticated.
Render a safe HTML snapshot with Puppeteer
Build a document from the normalized model instead of loading Facebook’s interactive interface. Escape all text inserted into HTML, validate link schemes before placing URLs in attributes, constrain image dimensions, and provide useful alt text. The following runnable shape assumes you install puppeteer in your Node project and supply graphPost and an optional output path. It returns PDF bytes, and can also save them to disk.

The displayed template intentionally does not render attachment URLs. Add media only after validating and safely fetching it. For untrusted content, escaping prevents markup injection; for links, URL validation prevents dangerous schemes. If your service accepts arbitrary post IDs or URLs from end users, add authorization checks and rate limits so it cannot be abused as a general-purpose fetch or rendering endpoint.
Set PDF layout options for the document you need
Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() uses print CSS by default. Its PDF options let you control the paper format, margins, page ranges, background printing, scale, timeout, font waiting, header/footer templates, and whether CSS page size takes precedence. Choose these settings explicitly for repeatable output.
- Paper and margins: use
format: 'A4'or another supported format; define@pagemargins in CSS or pass margins in the PDF options. - Backgrounds: set
printBackground: trueif colors and background graphics are part of the intended design. - CSS sizing: set
preferCSSPageSize: truewhen the template’s@pagesize should govern. - Long documents: choose
pageRangeswhen only selected pages are wanted, and test the rendered page breaks. - Fonts and timing:
waitForFontsandtimeoutaffect readiness and failure behavior. Keep a timeout appropriate to your worker limits. - Screen appearance: call
page.emulateMediaType('screen')before PDF generation only if screen CSS, rather than print styling, is the desired output.
Return or store the generated PDF
page.pdf() returns a buffer when no path is provided, so an HTTP handler can stream those bytes with a PDF content type and a suitable download filename, or upload them to object storage. Avoid holding many large buffers in memory at once: cap concurrent browser jobs, enforce a maximum output size, and close the browser in a finally block as in the example.
For auditability, store the post ID, permalink, retrieval timestamp, requested field set, and an application request ID alongside the file. Do not include access tokens in metadata, filenames, error messages, or logs. Decide how long to retain the PDF and any fetched media based on your privacy, contractual, and legal requirements.

Or skip the browser setup
If the post is publicly reachable without a login and you want a screenshot-style capture of its page rather than a structured API snapshot, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request option. It cannot grant access to private posts or replace Meta permissions; use the API-and-Puppeteer route above when you need an owned, predictable document layout.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.facebook.com/POST_URL -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response handling. It removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. For structured, archival PDFs, the Graph API method remains the better fit. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Troubleshooting common failures
Graph API returns an authorization or visibility error
Check that the token belongs to the right app or Page, has the required permission for this post, and has not expired. A public post is not necessarily readable through every token. If the owner’s privacy settings or the post’s status prevents access, stop the job and report retrieval failure; do not emit a blank PDF that looks successful.
The PDF is empty or fields are absent
Inspect the API response and requested field set. A missing message may mean the post has no text or that the field was not returned under the granted access. Treat missing data explicitly in the template, and distinguish a valid textless post from a failed API request.

Media is missing
Check whether the attachment URL is still valid and accessible to your server. Fetch authorized content using the permitted credentials and handle failures as media omissions, not as proof the post itself failed. Do not assume an attachment URL will remain durable.

Puppeteer times out or cannot launch Chromium
Separate retrieval errors from rendering errors in logs. Verify that the deployment includes Chromium and its required system libraries, allow enough memory and execution time for browser startup, and check whether fonts or remote resources are preventing readiness. Use a request ID and post ID for diagnosis without recording tokens or private post bodies.
The output has clipped content or unexpected page breaks
Review the actual HTML snapshot and print CSS, then adjust margins, image width, font sizes, and page-break rules. Test unusually long messages and large media, not just short posts. Use pageRanges only when intentionally omitting pages; otherwise it can make a complete post appear truncated.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Self-hosting Puppeteer means operating browser workers: Chromium startup, memory, CPU, dependencies, queueing, and concurrency limits are part of your cost. Reuse or pool browser processes only with careful isolation and cleanup, and bound how many pages run at once. Keep API retrieval and PDF rendering as separate steps so transient failures can be retried without accidentally creating a document from incomplete data.

For reliability, use bounded retries for transient network or rate-limit errors, honoring any retry guidance returned by the API. Do not retry permanent authorization or privacy failures as though they were temporary. Cache only where your retention and freshness requirements permit it; a cached PDF represents the earlier retrieval, not necessarily the post’s current state. ScreenshotNeo’s billing and capture model is described on its site; it is a separate option for page captures, not a substitute for authorized Graph API retrieval.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this create an official Facebook export?
No. It creates a PDF from the fields your application retrieved and formatted; it is not a Facebook-issued export.
Can I include comments or reactions?
Only if your product requirements and permissions support retrieving them. The example focuses on the post’s core fields.
Can I use this workflow for a private post I cannot access?
No. Neither Puppeteer nor a screenshot service bypasses Facebook permissions or privacy settings.
