Control an embedded design editor through its SDK initialization, workflow methods, configuration objects, and lifecycle callbacks. Your application should authenticate the user, decide which templates and tools are available, receive publish/error/cancel events, store a document ID or design JSON, and own the rules for rendering and final-file storage.

Start with an ownership and workflow contract

Before choosing an SDK, write down what your app—not the editor—must control. This prevents a visually successful embed from becoming a data, permission, or fulfillment problem later.

  • Identity: your session establishes the user, tenant, role, and authorization. Do not treat an editor iframe as your account system.
  • Design data: decide whether you retain a vendor document ID, complete scene JSON, or both. A document ID is convenient for reopening a hosted document; JSON gives you stronger migration, backup, and audit options when the vendor supports it.
  • Assets: define who stores uploaded images, fonts, and brand files, and how tenant boundaries are enforced.
  • Capabilities: pass only the templates, panels, export types, and editing operations that the current account and product plan allow.
  • Output: specify the required dimensions, resolution, color profile, bleed, file type, naming convention, and storage location before enabling publishing.

There are three common workflows:

  1. Template-led creation: start a new document from an approved template or a blank canvas.
  2. Existing-document editing: reopen a saved design by document ID, template ID, or asset, then let the user publish a revision.
  3. Headless generation: create or render designs without exposing an editor, useful for batch documents, server jobs, and automated variants.

Keep these workflows separate in your application routes. A create route should not silently overwrite a customer’s saved document, and an edit route should verify that the document belongs to the current tenant before it is passed to the SDK.

Adobe Express Embedded Design Editor

Adobe describes its Embedded Design Editor (EDE) as a focused creation surface delivered inside another application, rather than the complete Express application. It exposes module.createDesign() for a template collection or blank canvas and module.editDesign() for reopening an existing document identified by docId, templateId, or an asset.

Register and initialize the host

  1. Obtain an Embed SDK API key and register the exact domains from which your application will load the editor.
  2. Load CCEverywhere.js over HTTPS after your page has a secure origin. The public app name in code must match the name configured in Adobe Developer Console.
  3. Initialize only after the SDK script has loaded. The initialization call receives an object containing clientId and appName, plus your configuration parameters.
  4. Keep the API key and tenant authorization on the server where possible. A browser-visible client identifier is not a substitute for your own permission checks.

The following browser example assumes the SDK script has already loaded. Replace the identifiers with values from your registered Adobe application.

async function openCreateEditor() {
  const module = await window.CCEverywhere.initialize(
    {
      clientId: 'YOUR_EMBED_SDK_API_KEY',
      appName: 'YOUR_REGISTERED_PUBLIC_APP_NAME'
    },
    {
      // Supply the configuration required by your registered application.
    }
  );

  const appConfig = {
    variant: 'default',
    callbacks: {
      onPublish: ({ docId, preview }) => {
        // Send docId and any approved preview metadata to your API.
        console.log('published', docId, preview);
      },
      onError: (error) => {
        console.error('editor error', error);
      },
      onCancel: () => {
        console.log('editor cancelled');
      }
    }
  };

  const exportConfig = {};
  const containerConfig = {};

  await module.createDesign(
    { templateId: 'YOUR_APPROVED_TEMPLATE_ID' },
    { appConfig, exportConfig, containerConfig }
  );
}

The exact export and container fields depend on the SDK version and the options enabled for your application. The stable integration boundary is the documented set of appConfig, exportConfig, and containerConfig objects. For editing an existing design, add the required docConfig object and pass the stored identifier:

async function reopenDesign(existingDocumentId) {
  const module = await window.CCEverywhere.initialize(
    {
      clientId: 'YOUR_EMBED_SDK_API_KEY',
      appName: 'YOUR_REGISTERED_PUBLIC_APP_NAME'
    },
    {}
  );

  const appConfig = {
    variant: 'default',
    callbacks: {
      onPublish: ({ docId, preview }) => saveRevision(docId, preview),
      onError: reportEditorError,
      onCancel: closeEditor
    }
  };

  await module.editDesign(
    { docConfig: { docId: existingDocumentId } },
    { appConfig, exportConfig: {}, containerConfig: {} }
  );
}

Use the parameter shape documented for the version you have installed; do not infer field names from an unrelated Embed SDK module. In particular, EDE’s onIntentChange() callback is not operational for EDE workflows today, so build navigation around the callbacks that are supported: publish, error, and cancel.

Choose the EDE variant and container deliberately

The default variant is the general-purpose focused editor. The print variant is intended for print-oriented experiences and supplies print-friendly defaults such as bleed and crop marks. Select the variant before users begin editing because changing it after a document is created can alter the production assumptions behind the file.

containerConfig determines whether the editor fills an iframe, appears inline, or opens as a modal. Match the mode to your navigation and accessibility model: an inline editor works well in a persistent product workspace, while a modal is better for a short “customize then return” task. Reserve enough height for the canvas and provide a visible close path that maps to your own cancel handling.

Implement the create-save-reopen loop

  1. Your server authenticates the user and returns only templates and assets that the tenant may use.
  2. The client calls createDesign() with the selected template or blank-canvas workflow.
  3. When onPublish fires, send the document ID and permitted preview information to your API. Store the ID with the tenant, user, product, and revision metadata.
  4. After a draft is saved, route the user to an edit screen that verifies ownership and calls editDesign() with that ID.
  5. On error, retain the draft state in your own workflow and show a retry option. On cancel, leave the saved revision untouched.

Export configuration can expose image and PDF actions. Validate the resulting dimensions, file type, bleed, crop marks, and storage policy on the server before an order, download, or publication step.

Polotno when your SaaS must own the editor model

Polotno positions its embedded editor for white-label SaaS products. Its documented control surface includes navigation, accounts, fonts, templates, assets, permissions, visible panels, custom UI components, and locked elements. A design can be represented as JSON, stored with tenant records, and rendered in the browser, on the server, or through Polotno Cloud.

A tenant-safe Polotno sequence

  1. Authenticate the user and resolve the tenant on your server.
  2. Return tenant-specific templates, fonts, media, and permission flags.
  3. Load the design with only the tools and panels allowed for that role.
  4. Save updated design JSON in your database with a revision number and tenant key.
  5. Render the requested output in the browser, on your server, or through Polotno Cloud.

This model supports draft recovery, template versioning, account limits, and later re-editing without making the vendor’s account model your product’s source of truth. Lock brand elements and print-safe regions in the template, then enforce the same restrictions in your API when accepting saved JSON.

Print commerce qualification

Polotno documents a Printful pattern in which a customer edits within a product’s print area, the application exports a print-resolution PNG or renders server-side, the backend submits the file URL with the product variant, and Printful reports fulfillment status through webhooks. The page identifies this Polotno plus Printful integration as closed beta since April 2026. Confirm current availability and eligibility before designing a self-serve integration around it.

IMG.LY / CE.SDK for shared rendering targets

IMG.LY advertises a white-label embedded editor with templates, lockable designs, configurable features, and a headless rendering API. Its CreativeEngine is described as running on web, mobile, desktop, and server. That architecture is useful when one scene model or rendering rule must serve several clients instead of being recreated separately for a browser and a backend.

The listed web integrations include JavaScript, React, Vue, Angular, Svelte, and Next.js, with Node.js server support. Evaluate whether the same design representation, font licensing, asset pipeline, and export controls are available on every target you intend to ship; cross-platform availability does not by itself guarantee identical output.

Compare the control points before selecting an SDK

Decision axis Questions to answer Why it matters
Design and asset ownership Will you store JSON, assets, document IDs, or a combination? Determines backup, migration, deletion, and vendor lock-in.
Brand and permission controls Can you lock elements, restrict templates, and hide tools per tenant? Prevents users from changing regulated copy or brand assets.
Workflow API Are create, edit, publish, error, and cancel events available? Lets your application resume drafts and handle failures predictably.
Rendering targets Do you need browser, mobile, desktop, server, or headless rendering? Affects architecture and whether output can be generated without a user session.
Export and print Which image/PDF formats, dimensions, color controls, bleed, and crop marks are supported? Prevents rejected files and expensive production corrections.
Identity and auditability Can your account, tenant, role, and audit records remain authoritative? Separates editor access from business authorization.
Vendor requirements What domain registration, credential review, pricing, beta status, or partner approval is required? Unverified assumptions can block launch.
Downstream integrations Does the editor connect to the fulfillment or content API you already use? Reduces custom export and webhook code.

Choose Adobe EDE when a focused template-led or existing-document experience and its publish callbacks fit your product. Choose Polotno when tenant-owned JSON, white-label controls, and custom panels are central. Consider IMG.LY/CE.SDK when one editing and rendering model must span web, mobile, desktop, and server.

Production safeguards and failure handling

Permissions and isolation

  • Authorize the template, document, and asset on every server request; never trust an ID supplied by the browser.
  • Namespace stored JSON, previews, and files by tenant and revision.
  • Record who published, which template version was used, and which export settings produced the file.
  • Apply deletion and retention rules to both source designs and generated files.

Export validation

  • Check pixel dimensions and orientation against the product specification.
  • For print, verify bleed, crop marks, resolution, and color-profile requirements before sending the file downstream.
  • Scan or sanitize uploaded assets according to your own security policy, and keep final storage private until authorization succeeds.

Common errors and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Initialization is rejected Unregistered domain, mismatched public app name, insecure origin, or script not yet loaded. Use HTTPS, register the exact host, match the configured name, and initialize from the SDK load-complete path.
The editor opens but the template is unavailable The template or asset is outside the tenant’s allowed collection. Resolve permitted IDs on the server and pass only those IDs to the client.
A saved design cannot be reopened The document ID is missing, belongs to another tenant, or is passed to the wrong workflow. Look up the ID in your database, verify ownership, and call editDesign() with the required docConfig.
Publish appears successful but your record is missing The callback was not persisted or the API request failed after the event. Make the callback call an idempotent server endpoint, log the event, and expose a retry/reconciliation job.
Print output is rejected Incorrect dimensions, bleed, crop marks, resolution, or color settings. Validate export metadata before fulfillment and use the print-oriented configuration where appropriate.
Users can change a supposedly locked brand element The lock exists only in the UI or an older template revision is loaded. Publish a versioned template and enforce the same restriction when accepting design data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Testing and operating the integration

Test the host application and the editor as one system. Cover first-time creation, draft recovery, reopening after logout, cancel without saving, publish retries, expired sessions, unauthorized document IDs, missing assets, and oversized exports. Exercise each tenant role and verify that a template, font, or panel hidden in the UI is also rejected by the server.

Use versioned templates and migrations for stored JSON. Keep a known-good renderer and a sample document for regression tests whenever you change SDK versions, fonts, export settings, or server rendering. Confirm current pricing, SDK version, partner requirements, and beta availability immediately before release because those details can change independently of your application code.

Or skip the browser setup

If your immediate need is to document an editor screen, preview a published design, or generate a visual asset from a URL, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

For automated workflows, ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Its options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL-based caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.

Frequently asked questions

Is EDE the same as embedding the full Adobe Express application?

No. EDE is a focused, purpose-built creation surface. Your integration should expose only the creation or editing workflow your product needs rather than assuming every full-application capability is available.

Should a publish callback be treated as a completed business transaction?

No. Treat it as an event that starts your own idempotent persistence and validation step. Confirm ownership, export requirements, and storage success before marking an order or publication complete.

What is the safest way to support template updates?

Version templates, record the version with each saved design, and test migration or rendering behavior before making a new version the default. Do not silently reinterpret old customer designs with a new template contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an editor document ID as my only backup?

Use it only if the vendor’s retention, export, and deletion behavior meet your requirements. Where the SDK permits, retain validated design JSON and the associated asset and template version metadata as well.

How should an app handle a user closing the editor unexpectedly?

Persist drafts through the editor’s supported save or publish events, keep the last known revision in your database, and offer an explicit recovery route that reopens the authorized document.
