You can control an Arduino from a phone or computer browser by running a small web server on a network-capable board, serving an HTML form, and having the sketch validate each submitted command before changing an output. The official Wi-Fi and Ethernet examples demonstrate control over a local connection or network; they do not by themselves make a board safely accessible from anywhere on the internet.

Choose how the Arduino will connect

An HTML form is only the browser interface. The Arduino needs a network connection and a server sketch that receives the browser’s request and acts on it. Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet hardware that is compatible with your board and libraries.

Approach What it involves Good fit
Wi-Fi web server Arduino’s WiFiNINA tutorial uses the SimpleWebServerWiFi example to serve a page and control the built-in LED. The tutorial names the MKR 1010, UNO WiFi rev2, Nano 33 IoT, and MKR VIDOR 4000 as compatible examples. See Arduino’s WiFiNINA setup. A compact, single-board local-network project.
Ethernet web server The Arduino Ethernet library includes a WebServer example. The documented setup uses an Arduino board, Ethernet shield, USB cable, and RJ45 cable. See Arduino’s Ethernet-library instructions. A wired connection where the board and cabling are suitable.
Arduino Cloud dashboard Arduino Cloud offers dashboards and widgets for monitoring and controlling supported, configured boards through a web interface. Check current compatibility and service details in Arduino Cloud documentation. A managed dashboard when you do not need to serve your own custom HTML form.

These paths differ in hardware, setup, and interface. Wi-Fi and Ethernet examples are useful for browser control on a local link or network. Arduino Cloud is a separate managed option, not a way to make an arbitrary custom form automatically secure or compatible.

Set up a local browser-control example

Start with a low-risk output such as the built-in LED. The Wi-Fi tutorial demonstrates that pattern; its help article was last edited August 29, 2024. The Ethernet Shield article, last edited January 29, 2024, documents a separate wired example.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Confirm your board and network hardware. For Wi-Fi, verify that the board works with WiFiNINA. For Ethernet, verify the board and shield pairing. Check the board and library documentation before buying parts or compiling.
  2. Open the built-in example in the Arduino IDE. For Wi-Fi, use File → Examples → WiFiNINA → SimpleWebServerWiFi. For Ethernet, use File → Examples → Ethernet → WebServer. Menu capitalization or separators may vary slightly by IDE version.
  3. Configure the connection. The Wi-Fi tutorial places network credentials in arduino_secrets.h and shows a static-IP configuration. Keep Wi-Fi credentials out of published code and screenshots. The Ethernet article describes a direct PC-to-shield link-local setup using an address in the 169.254.0.0–169.254.255.255 range; that range is specific to its direct-link example, not a universal home-network setting.
  4. Upload the sketch and read its address. Open the Serial Monitor and note the address printed by the example. Arduino’s WiFiNINA instructions say: “The serial monitor shows the IP address board is connected to and also the link which you have to copy and paste in the browser.” The Ethernet example also prints an address for the browser.
  5. Open the address from a browser on the same network. Enter the board’s address in the browser on a phone or computer connected to the relevant local network or direct link. The example page should load; use its control to change the built-in LED.

Put explicit commands in the form

For an on/off control, use separate, clearly named actions rather than asking the browser to submit an arbitrary pin number. For example, the form can send a command named led with a value of on or off. The page should make clear which action each button will perform.

Keep the response lightweight: a microcontroller has limited memory and must construct and transmit the page. After a valid request, return a short confirmation of the resulting state and a link or button to return to the control page. A page that merely displays a button is not enough; the sketch must receive and handle the request.

Validate requests before changing an output

Treat every submitted field as untrusted input. The official examples establish the browser-to-board web-server pattern, but they are not a complete form-validation security specification. In your own sketch, accept only a small allowlist of expected command names and values, reject malformed or unknown requests, and never interpret arbitrary form text as a pin number.

  • Map each accepted command to the specific output it is allowed to control.
  • For numeric values, enforce a defined range before using the value.
  • Make output transitions explicit and choose a safe state for startup, invalid requests, and connection loss.
  • Test first with an indicator LED rather than a motor, heater, lock, or other device that could cause injury or damage.

Understand what “remote” means here

In the documented examples, remote control means opening the board’s address from another device on a local link or network. The Wi-Fi tutorial describes connecting to the board’s IP address, while the cited Ethernet setup is a direct local link. Neither is a complete, secure recipe for making a homemade form server reachable from the public internet.

Do not treat direct port forwarding to an Arduino as a secure default. An internet-facing project needs a separate design for authentication, authorization, encrypted transport, network segmentation, software maintenance, and safe behavior when something fails. Arduino Cloud documentation lists device areas including Wi-Fi/ESP32 and Ethernet, dashboards and widgets, cloud variables, APIs, and a Remote Relay Control application note; its support pages describe dashboards as a way to monitor and control a board through a web interface. Check current support, network requirements, features, and account terms before relying on that service.
