For a Michigan consumer complaint, contact the Michigan Department of Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Team. The main toll-free number is 877-765-8388; the office also lists 517-335-7599. You can submit a complaint online, by mail, or by fax. Check the state’s complaint directory first: some issues are handled by another agency.
Choose the right office before filing
Use the Michigan Attorney General’s complaint directory to check whether the Consumer Protection Team handles your issue or whether another state or federal agency is the better destination. The Attorney General’s FAQ, for example, directs most auto-repair complaints to the Michigan Secretary of State’s Bureau of Regulatory Services and identifies a different state division for used-vehicle complaints. See the Consumer Protection FAQs for those routing details.

Prepare your complaint safely
- Keep copies of everything you submit and retain the online file number if you file on the web.
- Limit personal information to what is necessary. The department warns against sending sensitive information such as a Social Security number or credit card information unless it is needed for the investigation.
- If sensitive information is necessary, the Attorney General directs consumers to submit the complaint and attachments by mail. Do not send sensitive personal information by email.
- Assume the complaint and supporting materials may be seen by others. The department says submissions may be disclosed under Michigan FOIA, sent to the business named in the complaint, shared with other government agencies, or disclosed in a civil or criminal case. It says it does not sell, rent, or lease submitted information, but that does not make a complaint confidential.
These handling instructions appear on the official complaint page and in the department’s December 27, 2024 filing guidance.

Know what happens after you file
The Attorney General describes its complaint assistance as informal mediation. The Consumer Protection Team sends the complaint and submitted materials to the business or individual and requests a response. The office says it contacts the consumer in writing after receiving a reply; if no response arrives within 30 days, it says it will contact the business again. Processing can take a few weeks, so these are descriptions of the agency’s process, not a promised resolution date.
Mediation does not make the Attorney General your private lawyer. If mediation does not succeed, or a business refuses to cooperate, the office says it will confirm the refusal in writing and suggests considering small claims court or consulting a private attorney.
The department reported that its Consumer Protection Team recouped $1.88 million for Michigan consumers and businesses in 2025 through complaint mediation recovery, settlements, and refunds, in a March 3, 2026 release. That combined total is not an estimate of what an individual complainant is likely to recover. Read the department’s 2025 consumer complaints announcement.
