Google’s current WordPress setup guide uses Site Kit by Google to connect an Analytics property. You can use Yoast for SEO and Site Kit for Analytics on the same site; the Analytics tag should be installed only once. The available official setup guidance does not establish a current Yoast-specific Analytics connection screen, so the steps below do not attribute Site Kit controls to Yoast.
What “connect Yoast SEO with Google Analytics” means
Yoast SEO and Google Analytics serve different purposes. Yoast helps manage search-related settings in WordPress; Analytics collects and reports activity on your site when a Google tag is installed and configured. Connecting Analytics therefore means linking an Analytics property to WordPress and ensuring the associated tag can collect data on the pages you want to measure. It does not mean that Yoast’s SEO settings control the Analytics tag.
If you searched for a Yoast menu that links an Analytics account, the available Google setup instructions do not confirm such a Yoast workflow. That is not proof that no Yoast feature or third-party integration exists; it means you should not follow instructions that treat Google’s Site Kit steps as Yoast settings. For a Google-documented WordPress setup, use Site Kit.
Before you start
- WordPress access: You need an account that can install and activate plugins, unless Site Kit is already installed and configured.
- Google account access: Sign in with an account that can access the Analytics property you intend to use. Google’s role and permission requirements can change, so follow the permissions shown in the current setup flow.
- An Analytics property: If you already have one, identify the property and its web data stream. If not, create or select an Analytics account and property, then add a web data stream using Google’s current GA4 setup guidance.
- A public, reachable site: The site needs to be accessible for verification and for Analytics collection. A password-protected staging site or a site blocked from visitors may not behave like the live site.
- A plan for existing tags: Before adding anything, find out whether the site already uses a Google tag, a CMS integration, or Google Tag Manager. Overlapping installations can send duplicate page views.
Connect Google Analytics to WordPress with Site Kit
- Install Site Kit by Google. In the WordPress admin, open the plugin installation area, search for “Site Kit by Google,” install it, and activate it. If the plugin is already active, go to its setup flow instead. WordPress menu wording can differ by version and permissions.
- Start Site Kit setup. Open Site Kit in the WordPress admin and choose the setup option to connect Google Analytics. Google’s labels may change; follow the live Site Kit prompts rather than relying on a label from an older tutorial.
- Sign in and grant requested access. Use the Google account that has access to the intended Analytics property. Review and approve the requested permissions so Site Kit can complete the setup.
- Verify the site and continue. Complete the verification and other setup prompts. If verification fails, check that the site is publicly accessible and that you are using an account with the necessary access.
- Select the correct Analytics property. Choose the existing property and web stream for this website when prompted. If the site does not yet have a property or stream, create one through Analytics following Google’s current GA4 instructions, then return to finish the connection.
- Complete setup and check the site. Finish the prompts, then open the public site in a browser and visit several pages. This gives Analytics a chance to receive page activity and helps you check that the site loads normally.
The exact setup screens and menu labels are subject to change. Site Kit is Google’s documented WordPress plugin route; a Site Kit step should not be described as a Yoast SEO setting.

Check whether Analytics is collecting data
- Visit the live site. Use a normal browser session and load a few pages that should carry the tag. If the site has low traffic, your own visit may be the only activity to check initially.
- Open the GA4 Realtime report. Look for activity associated with the visit. Google says collection can take up to 30 minutes to begin; this is an operational estimate, not a guarantee that every property will report within that time.
- Test the tag if activity is missing. Use Google Tag Assistant to check whether the tag is installed and detected. Also confirm that the tag is present across the pages where you expect measurement.
- Allow for processing time. A missing report immediately after setup does not by itself prove the connection failed. Check the installation and traffic, then allow time for collection and processing.
A useful distinction: the WordPress connection can appear complete while the site still fails to send usable page activity. Verify both the setup flow and the actual tag behavior.
Other ways to install the Google tag
Site Kit is not the only possible collection route. Choose one method that fits how this WordPress site is managed, and avoid installing parallel copies of the tag.

| Method | When it fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Site Kit by Google | You want Google’s documented plugin-based WordPress flow and can install plugins. | Connect the intended property, then check that another method is not already adding the tag. |
| CMS or hosting tag field | Your WordPress host, theme or another managed integration provides a Google tag field. | Follow that provider’s current instructions and confirm which ID format the field accepts. |
| Manual Google tag | You control a supported mechanism for inserting code across the site. | Use the complete tag supplied for the web stream and place it on every page. Do not add more than one Google tag to each page. |
| Google Tag Manager | The site already uses a correctly configured Tag Manager container, or the team manages tags there. | Configure the appropriate GA4 tag in the container and verify that the container itself is installed site-wide. |
Google’s WordPress Editor guidance describes adding the tag in the theme header, but editing header.php has a maintenance cost: changing the theme can overwrite the change. If you use that approach, arrange to preserve or reapply the tag when the theme changes. A supported site-wide integration or a maintained tag-management setup is preferable to an undocumented one-off edit.
Prevent duplicate page views
Before switching methods, inspect how the current tag is installed. For example, a site could have a tag injected by Site Kit and another copy added through a theme field or Tag Manager. More than one installation may send duplicate events or page views, making reports misleading. Google’s guidance is direct: “Don’t add more than one Google tag to each page.”

- Pick one primary route for adding the Google tag.
- Check the WordPress theme, active plugins, hosting controls and Tag Manager container for existing installations.
- After a change, use Tag Assistant and the GA4 Realtime report to verify that the intended setup is working.
- If duplicate activity appears, remove or disable the extra installation rather than adding another tag to compensate.
Troubleshooting: why no data appears
The Realtime report is empty just after setup
Collection may not have begun yet, or the site may not have had traffic. Google says it can take up to 30 minutes for data collection to begin. Visit the live site, check again after allowing time, and use Tag Assistant rather than concluding from an immediate empty report.
The tag is missing or installed incorrectly
Check that the selected property and web stream are the ones for this website. Test with Tag Assistant, and confirm the Google tag is present on the relevant pages. For manual installation, make sure the entire supplied tag is used and that the site-wide placement has not been lost during a theme or template change.

The tag appears more than once
Review Site Kit, other plugins, theme or host tag fields, custom code and Tag Manager. Remove the extra route so each page is not receiving duplicate Google tags. Then test again.
The site or verification step cannot be reached
Confirm the site is publicly accessible and that the account completing verification has the access needed for the selected property. If the site is private, behind a maintenance page or blocked by an access rule, resolve that condition or use the appropriate live-site setup before expecting normal collection.
Reports remain empty after the tag test
Google identifies four broad causes to check: there is no tag, the tag is installed incorrectly, the site has no traffic, or data has not yet been processed. Work through those possibilities in that order: test the tag, verify its site-wide placement and selected property, generate legitimate site activity, and allow processing time.

ScreenshotNeo does not connect Yoast or install Google Analytics. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; use it when you need a rendered-page image to inspect a page’s appearance, not as an Analytics substitute. A single request looks like this; replace the URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents, and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Those features help with screenshot work, but they do not configure Analytics. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.
