The key question is which device runs Jellyfin Server: the server must be able to read the drive’s mounted folder. The official Jellyfin Android app is a client for connecting to a server, not evidence that the phone itself is hosting one (Jellyfin clients; Jellyfin libraries).
First, identify where Jellyfin Server runs
Jellyfin separates the server, which reads and organizes media, from client apps, which connect to that server and play it. If you use the Android phone only to watch Jellyfin, attaching a USB drive to that phone does not add the drive to a library hosted on another computer. The drive has to be available to the machine and process running Jellyfin Server.
| Setup | Will the phone-attached drive enlarge the library? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Jellyfin Server runs on another computer or server; Android is the player | No. The separate server cannot use a drive merely because it is connected to the phone. | Attach the drive to the server host, mount it there, and add its directory to the Jellyfin library. |
| Jellyfin Server is being experimented with on an Android phone | Only if that particular server process can access the mounted drive and the mount remains available. The reviewed official documentation does not establish this as a supported Jellyfin Server setup on Android. | Verify the server’s access to the selected folder and test mount stability; do not assume file-manager visibility is enough. |
Connect a USB drive to Android
Android supports portable USB storage, and Android Open Source Project documentation includes USB OTG storage configurations. Support still depends on the phone’s hardware. Android apps access portable-device files through the Storage Access Framework, so seeing the files in a file manager does not prove another app or server process can read them (AOSP: Traditional storage; AOSP: Configuration examples).
- Check the phone’s USB host/OTG capability. Look up the phone’s specifications or manufacturer help, then choose an adapter or cable that matches its port, such as USB-C.
- Connect the portable drive and check that it mounts. Open a file manager and confirm you can browse its contents. If the drive does not appear or disconnects, power draw may be a factor; a powered hub is one possible troubleshooting measure, but requirements vary by hardware.
- Confirm which device actually hosts Jellyfin Server. If it is not the Android phone, the phone’s mounted drive is not a server-side library path.
- If testing a server process on Android, verify its own folder access. Android mediates access to portable storage for apps; granting or selecting access may be necessary, and file-manager visibility alone is inconclusive. Official Jellyfin documentation cited here does not confirm a supported Android-phone server workflow.
- Add the drive’s directory in Jellyfin Server. In the library settings, enter a path the server can read. Jellyfin supports multiple paths for a library and allows manual path entry if a folder picker does not show the directory (Jellyfin: Libraries).
- Keep the storage mounted and available. If the server cannot reach media storage during scheduled maintenance, Jellyfin warns that library items may be removed (Jellyfin: Storage).
Do not adopt the phone-connected drive as internal storage
Android’s adoptable-storage option formats and encrypts a drive for use with one Android device, making it unsuitable as a generally portable library disk. AOSP specifically warns: “In particular, USB devices connected to a phone or tablet should never be considered for adoption.” Accidental disconnection can risk data loss or corruption (AOSP: Adoptable storage).

What to check before buying an adapter
- Confirm the phone supports USB host/OTG and that the adapter matches its physical port.
- Confirm the intended server host can read the drive. An OTG adapter solves a connector problem, not the Jellyfin client/server distinction or Android app-access question.
- Check the specific drive and phone for power compatibility; a powered hub may help in some cases, but there is no universal requirement established here.
