The official way to accept Square payments on a WordPress site is to run WooCommerce and install the free WooCommerce Square extension. You connect the extension to the Square account, select one Square business location, configure payment and optional inventory synchronization, then enable Square in WooCommerce checkout. The documented integration is not a general WordPress payment form that works without WooCommerce.
What you need before connecting Square to WordPress
Prepare these items before installing the extension:
- An active Square account in a supported market: the current documentation lists the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, Spain, France and Japan.
- A WooCommerce store running on WordPress, with SSL enabled. Square requires HTTPS for the payment gateway.
- WordPress, PHP and WooCommerce versions that meet the current extension listing and setup guide. The setup guide lists PHP 7.4+, WordPress 5.8+ and WooCommerce 9.4+, while the payment-settings documentation lists WooCommerce 6.8+. Because these pages do not state one consistent minimum, check the extension listing and your installed release immediately before upgrading or installing.
- The Square account owner available to authorize the connection. A non-owner login can produce an Unauthorized error.
- Matching currency settings in Square and WooCommerce.
- If you want automatic product synchronization, background processing must be available and
opcache.save_commentsmust be enabled.
Square payment methods vary by market and currency. The documented methods include cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Square Gift Cards and Cash App Pay; Cash App Pay is identified as US-only in the overview. Confirm current availability for your business before promising a particular method to customers.
How do I add Square payments to WordPress?
1. Install WooCommerce Square
- In WordPress administration, open Plugins > Add New.
- Search for WooCommerce Square.
- Install the WooCommerce Square plugin and select Activate.
The WooCommerce product listing identifies the extension as free. You still need a functioning WooCommerce store and a Square merchant account.

2. Start the Square connection
- Open WooCommerce > Settings > Square.
- Choose the connect action.
- Sign in to Square as the account owner.
- Approve the requested access.
- When Square returns you to the site, confirm the returning site URL and choose the Square business location to use.
The setup guide documents one Square location at a time. Products and inventory associated with the selected location are the records that synchronize.
3. Choose production or sandbox
Use the sandbox configuration while testing checkout behavior without taking real payments. Use production for live customer transactions. Treat them as separate environments: a successful sandbox connection does not itself switch your store to live processing.

4. Select what the extension should do
WooCommerce Square can be configured for payment processing, product and inventory synchronization, or both. Decide this before enabling automatic synchronization:

Choose the synchronization direction and location in the extension settings, then review the first sync carefully. A shared inventory workflow is useful only when the Square location and catalog are the records you actually want connected.

5. Configure and enable the gateway
- Complete the payment settings in the Square section of WooCommerce.
- Save the settings.
- Open the WooCommerce payment-method settings and enable Square at checkout.
- Save again, then inspect the checkout page as a customer.
Menu labels in older Square instructions may differ. Use the current WooCommerce settings paths shown above rather than legacy dashboard wording.
How should I test the connection?
- Keep the store in sandbox mode while checking the checkout display, order creation, status changes and any configured synchronization.
- Confirm that the expected Square payment methods appear for your market and currency.
- Check that a test order reaches WooCommerce and that the corresponding Square record or inventory change appears when synchronization is enabled.
- Verify that email notifications, taxes, shipping and refund handling match your store’s workflow.
- Switch to production only after the sandbox checks are complete, then make a controlled live transaction and reconcile it in both dashboards.
Do not describe the integration as tested by a reviewer unless you have performed those checks yourself; the official documentation provides the sandbox workflow but does not establish a third-party test result.

Payments, authorizations and capture
For an immediate charge, configure the gateway to capture the payment as part of the order flow. If your fulfillment process needs authorization first, WooCommerce states: Square authorizations expire after 6 days.
Capture the authorized payment within that period; after six days, a new authorization is required. Build that deadline into fulfillment and customer-service procedures rather than assuming an authorization remains open indefinitely.
Why won’t Square connect to WooCommerce?

Sign out and reconnect with the Square account owner. The setup requires owner authorization; staff credentials may not be sufficient.

The connection returns to the wrong site or cannot complete
Confirm the returning site URL, use the current site address consistently (including HTTPS), and retry from WooCommerce > Settings > Square. Check that SSL is active and that security or caching software is not altering the callback.
Square is connected but does not appear at checkout
Open WooCommerce’s payment-method settings and enable Square, save the change, and test the checkout in a private browser window. Also verify that the store currency matches the Square account’s supported currency.
Products or stock do not synchronize
Check that synchronization was enabled, the intended Square location was selected, background processing is functioning, and opcache.save_comments is enabled. Only data associated with the selected location is included. Review the initial catalog mapping before relying on automatic stock updates.
A payment method is missing
Availability depends on geography and currency. Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Square Gift Cards and Cash App Pay are not necessarily available in every market; Cash App Pay is documented as US-only. Confirm the current Square and WooCommerce requirements for your country.

What the integration does not require
This setup is software-based. The documented WordPress route does not require a Square card reader or other physical accessory for online checkout. Hardware may be relevant to a separate in-person point-of-sale operation, but it is not a prerequisite for connecting Square payments to a WooCommerce website.
