The familiar red, white and yellow cable can still connect an older player to a modern TV—but only if you match the TV’s input or use the right converter. Yellow carries composite video; red and white carry right- and left-channel audio. If your TV has no matching sockets, an active composite-to-HDMI converter can bridge the connection. It changes the connector and signal format, not the picture’s original detail.
What the red, white and yellow cable does
Often called a composite AV or RCA cable, this three-plug connection carries standard-definition analog video and stereo audio. The typical color mapping is yellow for video, red for right-channel audio, and white—or sometimes black—for left-channel audio. Match each plug to the correspondingly labeled jack. Check the TV’s inputs before choosing an adapter
Look at the TV’s ports and its manual for “AV,” “composite,” “VIDEO IN,” or RCA input. Some TVs accept the three plugs directly; some provide analog video through a small 3.5 mm jack; others have no composite input. The manual for your exact model is the best way to confirm which connection it supports.
Three matching RCA inputs
If the TV has yellow, red and white composite input sockets, connect the source device’s RCA outputs to them, matching colors. Then select the TV’s AV or video input. Philips’ composite-connection instructions outline the direct RCA hookup.

A 3.5 mm AV input
A small jack may serve as the TV’s composite input, but the required breakout cable and wiring can vary by model. Use the cable specified in your TV’s manual rather than assuming any 3.5 mm-to-RCA lead will work. For example, a Philips manual for certain models specifies an OMTP 3.5 mm connection and warns that a CTIA cable may not work. Sony likewise directs owners to check their TV manual for the appropriate conversion cable and select the correct video input. Sony’s instructions for its VIDEO IN jack apply to the models covered there, not to every TV.
HDMI inputs but no composite input
Use an active composite-to-HDMI converter between the source and TV. The converter must accept composite RCA video and audio as input and send HDMI to the TV. A typical setup is:

- Connect the source device’s yellow, red and white outputs to the converter’s matching composite inputs.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the converter’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Connect power to the converter if its instructions require it; some models use USB power.
- Select the TV’s HDMI input for the port you used, and follow the converter’s setup instructions.

For an older player with RCA outputs and a TV with HDMI inputs, you need composite AV to HDMI: RCA goes into the converter, and HDMI goes out to the TV. An HDMI-to-composite converter does the reverse, for an HDMI source connected to a TV or display with composite input. The connector names can look similar on product listings, so check which side is labeled input and which is output before buying. Element Electronics explains the direction distinction.

What an adapter can—and cannot—improve
A converter makes the older analog connection usable with an HDMI input; it does not recover picture detail that the original source never contained. A VCR or DVD player connected over composite will not become a native HD or 4K source just because the signal reaches the TV through HDMI. TCL cautions that its described converter setup does not make VCR or DVD material look like 4K. TCL’s explanation and LG’s composite-input guidance both note the limitations of composite video.

Quick troubleshooting
- No picture: Confirm the yellow plug is in a composite video jack, not a component-video socket, and select the TV input connected to the source or converter.
- No sound: Check that the red and white plugs go to audio inputs, and that the TV is set to the correct input.
- 3.5 mm breakout lead does not work: Confirm the exact cable type and wiring required by the TV manual; breakout leads are not universally interchangeable.
- Converter setup fails: Recheck signal direction—composite source into converter input, HDMI output to TV—and connect converter power if required by its instructions.
