LibreTime does not have a documented direct YouTube Live output in the cited setup guidance. The practical route is LibreTime scheduled playout → Icecast stream → separate audio-to-video encoder or relay → YouTube Live. LibreTime supplies the automated radio audio; the separate relay packages it for YouTube and sends it using your YouTube stream URL and key. The bridge is an architectural solution, not a documented or certified LibreTime integration, so choose and test the relay separately.

How the connection works

LibreTime’s documented streaming outputs are Icecast and SHOUTcast. YouTube’s encoder workflow accepts a stream URL and key in compatible encoder software. A separate relay joins those two ends: it reads LibreTime’s Icecast output, provides a video component if needed, and sends the resulting stream to YouTube over RTMPS or RTMP.

The relay is an additional service to operate, not a setting that makes LibreTime itself publish to YouTube. The exact relay software, configuration syntax, and supported audio formats depend on the software you select; the official LibreTime and YouTube setup information does not provide one end-to-end recipe or endorse a particular bridge.

Before you configure anything

  • Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check the channel’s current status and YouTube Studio before scheduling the launch.
  • Choose where the relay will run. It can run on the LibreTime host, on another always-on server, or on hosted compute. Consider resource isolation, network reliability, access for maintenance, restart supervision, monitoring, and recurring cost. Hosting it on the LibreTime server simplifies the network path but couples two services’ resource use and failures.
  • Plan audio compatibility. LibreTime documents Icecast outputs in AAC, MP3, Ogg, and Opus, among other supported formats. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder specification lists AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm that your selected relay accepts the Icecast output and can deliver an accepted format; transcode if required, accounting for the added CPU load and configuration.
  • Decide how to handle the visual track. A radio broadcast still needs a video presentation through the chosen encoder, such as a suitable static visual or other permitted visual content. The cited LibreTime and YouTube guidance does not prescribe the relay’s visual setup.
  • Keep the stream key private. Treat it as an encoder credential. Store it only in the relay’s protected configuration or secret store, and do not place it in public logs, screenshots, or support posts.

Connect LibreTime to YouTube Live

1. Configure LibreTime’s Icecast output

  1. In LibreTime’s administration interface, configure an Icecast output using the host, port, mount, format, and credentials for your Icecast server. The precise UI labels can vary by LibreTime version and deployment, so use the configuration reference for the installed version rather than assuming a particular menu path.
  2. LibreTime’s current configuration reference describes up to three Icecast outputs. If more than two outputs share one Icecast server, the LibreTime documentation says to raise the Icecast source limit on that server.
  3. Start or schedule playout and confirm that the Icecast mount is reachable from the relay host. Record the connection details securely. A mount that works only from inside the LibreTime network will not be usable by a relay on a separate host until routing and access are configured.

2. Set up a separate relay or encoder

  1. Install or provision relay software on the host you selected. Choose a relay that can read the LibreTime/Icecast stream and send an encoder-compatible audio/video stream to YouTube. No particular relay product or command line is established by the documented guidance, so follow the chosen software’s current instructions.
  2. Configure the relay with the Icecast host, port, mount, and credentials. If its input cannot be passed through in a format YouTube accepts, configure audio transcoding to AAC or MP3. Avoid unnecessary transcoding when the input is already compatible.
  3. Set a constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds where the encoder exposes that setting; YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the recommended bitrate and resolution for your chosen video dimensions and frame rate; the right values depend on the output and available upstream bandwidth.
  4. Use RTMPS if supported by your relay. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted ingestion option. Verify the relay’s logs and stream-health indicators rather than assuming that a process starting successfully means YouTube is receiving valid audio and video.
  5. Configure the relay to restart after a process or host restart, and decide how it should respond when the Icecast source becomes unavailable. A process supervisor, monitoring, and alerting are operational choices; they are not provided automatically by LibreTime’s fallback mounts.

3. Create the YouTube Live destination

  1. Open YouTube Studio and use the Live Control Room to create or select the stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the relay’s encoder settings. YouTube’s encoder workflow instructs users to enter these details in the encoder; never publish the key.
  2. Start the relay and wait for the preview in the Live Control Room. Check that the audio is audible, the visual track is present, and the stream-health status is acceptable before using the Live Control Room’s Go live control for a scheduled event.
  3. Confirm that LibreTime is playing the intended scheduled programming and that the relay is reading the intended mount. Test a schedule transition and an interruption before treating the setup as unattended.

4. Test recovery and local recording

  • Test the failure cases you expect: a brief Icecast interruption, a relay restart, and a host restart. Confirm separately that LibreTime resumes playout, the relay reconnects as intended, and YouTube receives the stream again. A LibreTime fallback mount can help move listeners between sources in the radio chain, but it does not by itself recover the separate YouTube relay.
  • Monitor both ends: LibreTime/Icecast for source continuity and the relay/YouTube Live Control Room for destination health. YouTube recommends previewing and continuously monitoring stream audio and video quality.
  • If you need an archive, make an independent local recording and verify that it is being written correctly. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; its encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 event therefore should not be treated as a dependable complete YouTube replay.

Plan around YouTube’s 24/7 archive and DVR limits

A single 24/7 broadcast is longer than YouTube’s documented 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If replay or rewind matters, keep a local recording and investigate a deliberate way to end and split broadcasts using YouTube’s current workflow before relying on it. Do not assume that splitting events will preserve every viewer’s uninterrupted listening experience.

Copyright and channel readiness

  • Use music, recordings, artwork, and other material only when you have the necessary rights or permission for the intended YouTube use. The fact that a track is scheduled by a radio automation system does not establish that you are cleared to broadcast it on YouTube.
  • Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days before launch. If YouTube Studio reports a restriction or eligibility issue, resolve it there rather than repeatedly changing encoder settings.
  • If the channel’s goal includes monetization, review YouTube’s current monetization policies for reused content separately. Copyright permission and a channel’s monetization eligibility are different questions; permission alone does not guarantee monetization.

Common connection problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube shows no preview The relay is not reaching YouTube, or the destination URL/key is wrong. Recheck the copied server URL and stream key, relay connection logs, outbound network access, and the Live Control Room destination.
Relay cannot open the Icecast source Incorrect host, port, mount, credentials, or network access; the mount may not be publicly reachable from the relay. Verify each Icecast connection detail and test reachability from the relay host. Check the source is active in LibreTime.
Video arrives but audio is silent or rejected Input format incompatibility, an incorrect mount, or a relay audio mapping/transcoding issue. Confirm the Icecast mount is carrying audio; check relay input and output logs; configure AAC or MP3 delivery as needed.
Stream health is poor or unstable Insufficient upstream bandwidth, unstable connectivity, or encoder settings that do not fit the available connection. Check the relay host’s sustained upload capacity, use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the selected resolution, and monitor the Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators.
Audio breaks when the schedule changes The source transition or relay reconnection is not handling the mount change or interruption. Test schedule transitions and source changes in advance. Configure and monitor relay-side reconnect behavior; LibreTime fallback mounts alone do not guarantee YouTube-side recovery.
Broadcast works but no complete replay appears The event exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive boundary. Use a local recording as the reliable archive and evaluate shorter broadcast events if YouTube replays are important.
You cannot start a livestream despite a working encoder The channel may not meet YouTube’s current livestream eligibility requirements or may have a restriction. Check channel verification and restriction status in YouTube’s current guidance and YouTube Studio.

Costs and operating trade-offs

A self-hosted relay has no single cost established by the documented LibreTime/YouTube workflow. Budget for the compute host, network capacity, maintenance, monitoring, and any transcoding load. Running the relay on the LibreTime machine may avoid a second host but makes capacity and failure planning more important. A separate server improves isolation at the cost of another service to maintain. Hosted compute replaces some hardware administration with a recurring service cost; compare the actual provider’s terms and capabilities before choosing it.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping an uploaded video live on YouTube; it is not an Icecast relay and does not ingest LibreTime’s live, changing schedule. If your use case can be prepared as uploaded video rather than a live LibreTime feed, the workflow is: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed.

Can LibreTime stream directly to YouTube?

The documented LibreTime outputs are Icecast and SHOUTcast, while YouTube’s documented setup uses an encoder with a YouTube stream URL and key. Those documents do not establish a native direct LibreTime-to-YouTube output, so plan on a separate relay unless your specific installation provides a verified integration.
