One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchShort answer: Google’s official MCP service for this use case is the Google Developer Knowledge MCP server. It searches Google’s official developer documentation with a search_documents tool; it is not documented as a general Google web-search API. To research documentation and then inspect or operate ordinary web pages, configure that server and a Playwright MCP server as two separate connections in the same MCP client.
The exact settings file, authentication fields and Playwright launch command depend on your MCP client. The workflow below keeps those boundaries explicit so an agent can search authoritative Google documentation, hand the result to Playwright, and verify the live page in a browser.
What “Google Search MCP” means here
The name is ambiguous. Google’s official service is the Developer Knowledge MCP server, whose search_documents tool searches Google developer documentation and returns relevant excerpts with document names. The reference does not describe it as a general-purpose search engine for the public web.
That distinction determines the architecture:
- Developer Knowledge MCP: documentation discovery and quotation from Google’s developer corpus.
- Playwright MCP: live browser automation against ordinary web pages—opening URLs, inspecting rendered content and taking actions.
- Your MCP client: the orchestrator that exposes both servers to the same model or agent.
If you need web-wide Google results, do not claim that the Developer Knowledge server provides them. Use a separately supported web-search service and configure it alongside these two servers.

Prerequisites and design decisions
Choose an MCP client that supports multiple servers
Google’s Developer Knowledge guide includes client-specific setup examples, including Codex. Playwright states that its standard configuration works with multiple MCP clients. Before editing a file, identify where your client stores MCP server definitions and whether it supports API keys, OAuth or Application Default Credentials (ADC).
Decide how Google authentication will work
Google documents API-key setup for third-party IDEs and CLI agents. Supported environments can instead use OAuth or ADC. Use the method your client and deployment environment support; do not place a long-lived key in a browser page, a prompt, source control or a shared team configuration.
Keep the servers separate
Do not try to merge the Google endpoint into Playwright’s command. Register two server entries, give each a clear name, and let the client present both tool sets to the agent.
Connect the Google Developer Knowledge MCP server
- Open your MCP client’s server configuration screen or file.
- Add a server entry pointing to
https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp. Use the client’s documented remote-HTTP or MCP-URL field rather than inventing a local executable command. - Configure authentication. For a third-party IDE or CLI agent, supply the API-key mechanism documented by Google. In an environment that supports it, select OAuth or ADC instead.
- Save the configuration and restart or reload the client so it discovers the server.
- Inspect the available tools. A successful connection should expose
search_documents.
Run a narrow test query such as a product name plus a specific API concept. Ask the agent to return the document name and the excerpt, not just a paraphrased answer. This makes it possible to distinguish a documentation result from a live-page observation later.

Connect Playwright MCP as a second server
- Install or enable the Playwright MCP server using the installation method documented by Playwright for your client.
- Add Playwright’s standard server entry as a separate MCP definition. The exact
command, arguments and browser options vary by client and Playwright release, so copy the current standard entry from Playwright’s documentation rather than substituting a guessed command. - Restart or reload the MCP client.
- Confirm that Playwright tools appear in the tool list and that the server can launch a browser in your execution environment.
Give the entries unambiguous names such as google-developer-knowledge and playwright. Naming prevents an agent from confusing a documentation-search tool with a browser-navigation tool.
Use both servers in one browser workflow
1. Search authoritative documentation first
Ask the agent to call search_documents with the exact API, product or error you are investigating. Require the response to include document names and excerpts. If the result is outside Google’s developer documentation, treat that as a scope problem rather than silently presenting it as a web search.

2. Turn the result into a browser target
Have the agent extract the canonical documentation URL or the web page you want to inspect. The Google server supplies knowledge; it does not render the page. Pass the URL explicitly to Playwright.
3. Inspect the live page with Playwright
Ask Playwright to open the URL, wait for the relevant content, inspect the rendered text and report what is actually present. This catches redirects, authentication gates, client-side rendering and content that differs from a documentation excerpt.

Instruct the agent to label each statement as either “Google documentation result” or “observed in browser.” This simple convention prevents a stale excerpt from being presented as the current state of a live site.
5. Add actions only after verification
For a form submission, navigation or other state-changing action, have Playwright verify the target page and required controls first. Ask for a confirmation before destructive actions, and capture the resulting URL or visible success message.
A reusable prompt for the combined setup
Use a task instruction such as:
“Use the Google Developer Knowledge search_documents tool to find the official documentation for [topic]. Return document names and relevant excerpts. Then use Playwright to open the most relevant URL, wait for the page to render, inspect the matching section and report any difference between the documentation excerpt and the live page. Do not describe Google’s documentation search as a general web search.”
The prompt makes the hand-off explicit and gives the agent a rule for resolving conflicting information.

Authentication, isolation and operational safeguards
Protect credentials
- Store API keys or credential references in the MCP client’s secret facility or environment, not in prompts or checked-in configuration.
- Use the least-privileged Google credential available for the client and environment.
- Do not expose a credential to Playwright page scripts or send it as a URL query parameter unless the service explicitly requires that method.
Control browser side effects
- Use a separate browser profile for automation.
- Start with read-only navigation and inspection.
- Require explicit approval before purchases, account changes, publishing or deletion.
- Record the URL, visible result and timestamp when an action matters.
Plan for client differences
There is no universal MCP settings filename or authentication schema. A configuration that works in one IDE may not load in another. If the server does not appear, validate the client’s expected transport type, field names and reload procedure before changing the endpoint.
Troubleshooting
The Google server connects but no search tool appears
Reload the MCP client and inspect the server’s initialization output. Confirm that the URL is exactly https://developerknowledge.googleapis.com/mcp and that authentication succeeded. A client that treats the entry as a local command instead of a remote MCP endpoint may never complete initialization.
Authentication fails
Check whether your client supports the Google authentication method you selected. Third-party IDEs and CLI agents may require an API key, while supported environments can use OAuth or ADC. Replace an expired or revoked credential and keep it out of the prompt and repository.
The agent returns ordinary web results
That is a scope mismatch. The official server searches Google developer documentation. Ask for search_documents results and document names, or configure a separate web-search service if your task genuinely requires public-web results.
Playwright is visible but cannot launch a browser
Verify the Playwright installation and the browser runtime required by your client. Check the server’s standard entry, executable permissions and the execution environment’s display or sandbox restrictions. Fix the launch problem before debugging the Google connection; the services are independent.
The documentation and page disagree
Keep both observations. The documentation result is what the Google service returned; the browser observation is what the live page displayed. Check the document version, redirects and account state before deciding which applies.
A page is blank or incomplete
Wait for the relevant selector or rendered content rather than assuming navigation completion means application completion. Check redirects, login requirements, blocked resources and client-side errors. If the page requires credentials, provide them through the browser client’s secure context, not through page text.
Performance and reliability guidance
- Search narrowly: product names, API names and error strings reduce irrelevant documentation excerpts.
- Separate phases: complete documentation search before launching browser actions, then pass only the necessary URL and question to Playwright.
- Use deterministic waits: wait for the content that proves readiness instead of relying only on a fixed delay.
- Retry selectively: retry transient connection or navigation failures, but do not repeat a state-changing action without checking whether it already succeeded.
- Log provenance: preserve the selected document name, URL and browser-visible result so a later run can identify what changed.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean image or PDF of a URL rather than interactive browser control, ScreenshotNeo provides a direct screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

FAQ
Is this an official Google web-search API?
No. The official service described here searches Google developer documentation through search_documents; it is not documented as general Google web search.
Can one MCP server both search documentation and control Playwright?
They are separate services. Configure both in an MCP client that supports multiple servers.
Which authentication method should I choose?
Use the method your client supports: Google documents API keys for third-party IDEs and CLI agents, and OAuth or ADC for supported environments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright receive the Google search results automatically?
Only if your MCP client or agent passes the selected URL or excerpt from one tool call into the next. The servers do not merge their state themselves.
