You can move data between Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel by importing or exporting a file, or edit an Excel workbook stored in Google Drive using Sheets. These are different workflows: Google’s documented steps do not provide a general live, two-way sync between a standalone Excel workbook and a Sheets file.
Choose the right way to connect Sheets and Excel
| Your goal | Google-documented option | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Bring an Excel workbook into Google Sheets | In Sheets, select File > Import. | Create a new spreadsheet, insert the workbook’s sheets into a spreadsheet, or replace the spreadsheet. The Excel source file is not changed. |
| Convert an Excel workbook to a native Google Sheets file | Open the Excel file in Drive, then select File > Save as Google Sheets. | Creates a separate Sheets file. The original Excel file remains in Drive unless you delete it. |
| Edit an Excel workbook without converting it | In Chrome, open the Excel file stored in Drive with Google Sheets. | Google says changes are saved to the original Microsoft Office file. |
| Give an Excel-format copy of a Sheets file to someone | In Sheets, select File > Download > Microsoft Excel, or email an Excel attachment. | Creates or sends an Excel-format copy; it does not establish a live link to the Sheets original. |
These options are described in Google’s interoperability guidance. The documented import choices do not include replacing only the current sheet, appending to the current sheet, or placing imported data at a selected cell.
Import an Excel file into Google Sheets

Open Google Sheets and open an existing spreadsheet or create a new one.
-
Select File > Import.
-
Choose the Excel file you want to import.
-
Choose one of the available destinations: Create new spreadsheet, Insert new sheet(s), or Replace spreadsheet.

Convert the workbook or keep editing it as an Excel file?
Convert when collaboration in Sheets is the priority
To make a native Sheets copy, open the Excel file in Drive and select File > Save as Google Sheets. The new Sheets file is separate from the Excel original, so edits to the copy should not be mistaken for changes to that source workbook.
Google recommends converting Excel spreadsheets to Sheets for simultaneous collaboration when the dataset is 20 million cells or fewer. This is Google’s current product guidance, not an independent performance benchmark. See Google’s best-practices guidance.

Keep the workbook in Office format when Excel-specific features matter
If you need to preserve and edit the Office workbook itself, Google documents opening it in Sheets in Chrome. Its guidance says: “Any changes you make are saved to the original Microsoft Office file.” That is different from saving a native Google Sheets copy.
Google recommends continuing to use Excel for datasets greater than 20 million cells, workbooks using the Hyperion add-on with Excel, and workbooks that rely on rare chart types such as 3D pyramid charts or pie-of-pie charts. These are Google’s recommendations; they do not guarantee compatibility for every workbook. Details are in Google’s best-practices guidance.

Export a Google Sheets file to Excel
-
Open the Sheets file.
-
Select File > Download > Microsoft Excel.
-
Open or share the downloaded Excel-format file as needed.
Google also documents emailing an Excel attachment. Either route gives you an Excel-format copy, rather than a live connection that keeps the Sheets original and Excel copy synchronized. See Google’s guidance and its instructions for using Sheets with Excel.

Check compatibility before depending on a converted workbook
Sheets and Excel share many basic spreadsheet tasks, but a conversion does not promise that every workbook feature will behave identically. Test a copy of the file, paying particular attention to formulas, chart formatting, and automation.
- Macros: Excel macros do not simply become Sheets macros. Google says you must recreate Excel macro automation using Google Apps Script to use it in Sheets. See Google’s best-practices guidance.
- Large datasets, add-ons, and unusual charts: Use Google’s size and feature guidance above when deciding whether to convert.
- Workbook-specific behavior: Check important calculations and visual elements in the destination file before treating it as an equivalent replacement.
Does IMPORTRANGE connect Excel to Sheets?
No. Google Sheets’ IMPORTRANGE function imports a range from another Google spreadsheet, after you grant access to the source. It does not connect to an Excel workbook. Google documents a limit of 10 MB of received data per request; this is a function limit, not a workbook-size limit. Google suggests limiting ranges or considering Apps Script or Connected Sheets for other use cases. See Google’s IMPORTRANGE documentation.
Sheets also has web-data functions, but they are not a general Excel sync tool. Google says IMPORTDATA, IMPORTHTML, and IMPORTXML check for updates every hour while the document is open. These functions have request limits and may require access prompts. See Google’s import functions documentation.
