You generally do not connect AWS Elemental MediaPackage directly to a YouTube Live ingest endpoint. MediaPackage receives and packages live input for playback; an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaLive pushes an HLS feed to YouTube. For YouTube publishing, configure the encoder-to-YouTube path. Use MediaPackage separately if you also need AWS-originated playback for viewers.

What MediaPackage does—and why it is not the YouTube push destination

AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2 is a just-in-time packaging and origin service. An upstream encoder sends it HLS or CMAF input; MediaPackage processes that input into configured playback outputs for devices requesting them over HTTPS. Its documented flow is an origin-and-playback workflow, not an encoder-push workflow to YouTube. See AWS’s MediaPackage live processing flow and supported inputs and outputs.

YouTube HLS ingest works in the opposite direction: an encoder sends media playlists and segments to a YouTube-provided endpoint over HTTPS using HTTP PUT or POST. The official documentation reviewed does not describe a MediaPackage endpoint as a direct YouTube ingest destination. AWS’s documented publishing route uses MediaLive to send HLS output to YouTube.

Choose the workflow for your goal

Goal Component that sends or serves the video What the connection does
Publish a live feed on YouTube An HLS-capable encoder, such as AWS Elemental MediaLive The encoder pushes playlists and segments to the YouTube ingest endpoint.
Provide viewer playback from AWS MediaPackage, optionally with a delivery service such as CloudFront MediaPackage packages incoming media and serves playback outputs to requesting viewers.
Publish to YouTube and provide AWS playback Configure both paths for their separate purposes Send an encoder output to YouTube and configure MediaPackage for AWS-originated playback; do not treat the MediaPackage endpoint as the YouTube push destination.

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS architecture distinguishes MediaLive for transcoding, MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for delivery from MediaPackage endpoints.

Send an AWS MediaLive output to YouTube over HLS

The following is the AWS-native publishing path documented for YouTube HLS ingest. Console labels and workflows can change; use current AWS and YouTube documentation alongside the 2021 AWS example linked below.

  1. Create or select a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event, then choose HLS as the stream protocol if you intend to use HLS ingest. Copy the HTTPS ingest URL YouTube generates and, if provided, the optional backup URL. The endpoint is specific to the stream; do not use an example URL as if it were universal or disclose your private stream key. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide and the YouTube LiveStreams API.
  2. Configure an HLS output group in MediaLive. Set the output destination to the YouTube HLS ingest URL and include the stream key as required by YouTube’s generated endpoint. AWS’s published example uses HLS Basic PUT. Confirm the current field names and destination format in the AWS console and current YouTube stream settings.
  3. Match YouTube’s HLS media requirements. Configure the output as muxed M2TS/TS with H.264 or HEVC video and a single AAC audio track. Use a closed GOP, a segment duration from one to four seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Send over HTTPS using PUT or POST. Byte-range delivery is unsupported. These are YouTube HLS requirements; check the current YouTube HLS ingestion guide before going live.
  4. Start the encoder and verify the event. Start the MediaLive channel and check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming feed and stream health before making the event public. If you configure a backup destination, use the optional backup URL YouTube generated for that stream rather than guessing an address.

AWS’s MediaLive-to-YouTube example, dated 14 April 2021, demonstrates an HLS output group, HLS Basic PUT, and a two-second segment setting. It is a 4K HDR example, not a universal preset; use two-second segments only if they fit your stream configuration and YouTube’s current one-to-four-second range.

Configure MediaPackage separately for AWS playback

If viewers also need a playback origin on AWS, configure MediaPackage as a separate branch of the production workflow. MediaPackage v2 supports HLS and CMAF inputs over HTTPS; its documented requirements include a channel policy for sources outside the AWS account and unencrypted incoming media segments. Its configured outputs include HLS and DASH options, with format and codec constraints described in the supported formats documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In this design, the upstream encoder supplies MediaPackage with an accepted input, while the encoder’s YouTube output group sends a separate HLS output to YouTube. Do not substitute a MediaPackage playback endpoint for the YouTube ingest URL: the former serves requested playback, while the latter receives pushed encoder media.

Important HLS behavior and trade-offs

  • Latency: YouTube’s HLS setup guidance says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Ultra-low latency is off when HLS is selected.
  • Codec and packaging: YouTube requires muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, single-track AAC audio, and a closed GOP. The guide supports up to 60 fps. HDR has additional requirements, including HEVC and color settings; consult the current ingestion guide rather than applying a 4K HDR profile to every stream.
  • Segments and playlist: Keep segments between one and four seconds and use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Byte-range delivery is not supported.
  • Protocol: The encoder sends playlists and segments to the HTTPS endpoint using HTTP PUT or POST. This is a push workflow, unlike MediaPackage’s delivery of output to requesting playback clients.

Common connection problems

  • YouTube does not receive a feed: Check that MediaLive is targeting the generated HLS ingest URL, that the stream key is correct and private, and that the selected YouTube stream is configured for HLS.
  • YouTube reports an unsupported format: Check for muxed M2TS/TS, supported H.264 or HEVC video, a single AAC audio track, closed GOP, and segments in the one-to-four-second range. Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s HLS guide.
  • The playlist or segment delivery is rejected: Verify HTTPS PUT or POST delivery, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and that byte-range delivery is disabled.
  • MediaPackage rejects its input: Verify that the source is HLS or CMAF over HTTPS, that the channel policy permits the source when it is outside the account, and that incoming media segments are not encrypted.
  • The YouTube stream appears delayed: HLS has higher latency than RTMP in YouTube’s guidance; choosing HLS also disables ultra-low-latency mode. Decide whether HLS constraints or a different supported ingest protocol better serves the production.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream—not to route a live MediaPackage workflow—StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that use case. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. For Indian customers, UPI works alongside cards. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
