Yes—you can use an older Xbox controller with an iPhone if it is a Bluetooth model supported by Apple. Pair it from the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings; the key is checking the controller’s exact model, since not every Xbox controller has Bluetooth.
Which Xbox controllers work with iPhone?
Apple lists these Xbox controllers as supported with Apple devices, including iPhone:
- Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, Model 1708
- Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X controllers
- Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2
- Xbox Adaptive Controller
See Apple’s Xbox controller compatibility and connection instructions. If you have an older controller, check its model number rather than assuming it has Bluetooth. A supported model is a good starting point, but individual games may differ in controller and feature support.

- Press the Xbox button to turn on the controller.
- Hold the controller’s Connect button for a few seconds, until it enters pairing mode.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth, then select the Xbox controller when it appears in the nearby-device list.
Apple’s Xbox-specific instructions describe the Connect-button step. Once paired, try the controller in a game that supports controller input.

What to expect from buttons and features
Connecting the controller does not guarantee every button or feature will work in every app. Apple says support for features such as a controller’s audio jack or lights varies by controller and app. Check the game’s own controller support if input is missing or a particular feature does not behave as expected; Apple’s wireless game controller guidance explains the limitation.
Can you connect it with a cable?
Apple says some controllers may connect directly using a cable that supports both data and charging. This is conditional, not a universal wired setup for Xbox controllers: compatibility depends on the controller, iPhone, and cable. Apple’s controller connection guidance covers this option.

How to change controller button settings
For controller button-customization settings, Apple requires iOS 16 or later. This is a requirement for customization, not a blanket minimum for connecting every controller. If the option is available for your controller, go to Settings > General > Game Controller. See Apple’s general controller instructions.
What to try if pairing fails
- Install current software updates for both the iPhone and controller.
- In Settings > Bluetooth, forget the controller, then put it back into pairing mode and pair it again.
- Reduce the number of other connected Bluetooth devices if interference may be an issue.
- If the iPhone says a controller firmware update is needed, follow Apple’s Xbox-specific instructions, which direct users to Microsoft’s guidance for updating Xbox wireless controllers.
These are Apple’s recommended troubleshooting steps in its wireless controller guidance and Xbox controller instructions.
