You can connect an RCA amplifier directly to a TV only when the TV has analog audio output and the amplifier has analog RCA audio input. If the TV’s output is optical digital and the amplifier has only RCA inputs, you need an optical-to-RCA digital-to-analog converter. HDMI ARC works only when both devices support it and you use their designated ARC ports.
Check the ports before choosing a cable
Look at the labels on both devices. On the TV, identify an audio output; on the amplifier, identify an audio input such as AUX, LINE, or CD. RCA plugs are commonly red and white for stereo audio, but a matching connector shape alone does not ensure compatibility: optical carries digital audio, while RCA audio inputs expect analog audio.
Port availability varies by model. A TV’s RCA connectors may be inputs rather than outputs, and a 3.5 mm jack may serve a purpose other than audio. Check the device labels and manuals when the direction or function is unclear.
Choose the connection that matches both devices
| TV audio output | Amplifier input | Connection | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Analog RCA audio out | Analog RCA audio in | Stereo RCA cable | Connect left and right channels to matching audio ports; do not use a TV RCA input. |
| Optical digital out | Optical digital in | TOSLINK optical cable | Select a digital format supported by the amplifier. |
| Optical digital out | Analog RCA input only | Optical-to-RCA digital-to-analog converter, plus the required cables | Confirm the converter accepts the TV’s optical format and outputs stereo analog RCA. A cable by itself does not convert digital audio to analog. |
| HDMI ARC | HDMI ARC | HDMI cable connected to the designated ARC ports | Both devices must support ARC; enable ARC/CEC if required and select the external audio device. |
| Headphone output, if present | Analog line/RCA input | 3.5 mm-to-RCA stereo cable | Confirm the jack is an audio output and whether its volume is adjustable. |
Analog RCA on both devices
Connect the TV’s stereo audio output to a stereo input on the amplifier. Samsung describes analog cable as one of the options for sending TV sound to a stereo receiver or home theater system: Samsung’s connection guidance.

Optical output and an analog-only amplifier
Use an optical-to-RCA converter between the TV and amplifier. The converter must match the TV’s digital output and provide stereo analog RCA output. LG’s instructions for a digital amplifier describe connecting the TV’s optical digital sound output to a digital sound input with a TOSLINK cable; that direct optical method applies when the amplifier has a compatible digital input, not when it has RCA inputs only: LG’s optical connection guidance.
HDMI ARC
ARC is an option only if the TV and amplifier or receiver both support it. Connect the devices using the HDMI ports labeled ARC or eARC, then choose the external audio device in the TV’s sound settings. Samsung’s instructions cover compatible equipment, designated ports, and setup: Samsung’s ARC guidance.

- Durable PVC Jacket: The black PVC jacket provides excellent protection and flexibility for the cable, resisting wear and tear.
- Gold-Plated Connectors: The gold plating ensures optimal signal transfer and resists corrosion, resulting in a clear audio signal.
- Color-Coded Connectors: The red and silver white connector housings provide quick and easy identification for right (red) and left (silver white) audio channels.
- Molded Strain Relief : The molded strain relief boot provides protection to the cable where it separates, extending its life.
- Reliable Audio Transmission: This cable is designed for clear and accurate audio signal transfer, enhancing the audio experience.
Connect and configure the system
- Turn off both devices. Check the manuals first if either device has unusual connection requirements.
- Identify the output and input. On the TV, look for audio out, optical/digital audio out, headphone out, or HDMI ARC/eARC. On the amplifier, find an analog line input, optical input, or HDMI ARC input. Make sure you are not connecting an output to another output or an input to another input.
- Connect the matching cable or converter. For RCA, match left and right audio channels. For optical, connect the TV’s optical output to a compatible optical input—or route it through a converter if the amplifier accepts analog RCA only. For ARC, use the labeled ARC ports.
- Turn the devices on and select their inputs and outputs. Choose the matching input on the amplifier and set the TV to send sound to the external equipment. Menu names differ by model; LG gives “Optical digital/HDMI ARC” as an example of an external output selection in its setup guidance.
- Start playback at low volume. Raise the amplifier volume gradually. If you hear nothing, use the checks below rather than increasing the volume blindly.
Fix common connection problems
No sound over optical
- Set the TV’s sound output to optical or external audio and select the optical input on the amplifier or converter.
- Check that the receiving device supports the TV’s selected digital audio format. If a converter is involved, it may require stereo PCM; consult the converter and TV manuals for supported formats and settings.
- Check that the optical cable is fully seated at both ends.
No sound over HDMI ARC
- Confirm the cable is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the corresponding ARC port on the amplifier or receiver.
- Verify that both devices support ARC. Enable ARC and CEC settings if the manuals or menus require them, then select the external audio device as the TV’s output. See Samsung’s ARC setup instructions.
The TV speakers still play, or you hear an echo
Choose the external equipment as the TV’s sound output. Some models may allow TV speakers and external equipment to play together; LG warns that simultaneous output can create an echo in its amplifier setup guidance.

Volume control is too low, too high, or unavailable
TV headphone outputs and fixed line-level outputs can behave differently. Whether the output level is adjustable depends on the model, so check its manual before relying on the TV remote for volume control.
Still no sound
Recheck the connection direction at both ends, the amplifier’s selected input, the TV’s sound-output setting, cable seating, and digital format compatibility. LG’s external-audio troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the output selection and connections; exact menu labels depend on the TV model.
