To connect an MCP client to an Oracle database, first choose the Oracle MCP route that matches where your database runs and who manages access. Use SQLcl MCP with a named or saved SQLcl connection for a locally managed workflow; use ORDS MCP when an administrator can expose an authenticated /mcp endpoint; or use OCI Database Tools MCP Server for supported Oracle cloud database connections through a managed remote service. These routes have different hosting and authentication models, so there is no single client configuration that works for all three.

Before connecting an AI client, restrict the database identity, exposed targets, and available tools to the minimum needed. The client may be able to invoke SQL or PL/SQL operations depending on the implementation and permissions.

Choose the Oracle MCP route that fits your deployment

“Oracle MCP server” can mean several different implementations. The right choice depends on whether you want SQLcl to manage database connections, ORDS to provide a server endpoint, or OCI Database Tools to host a managed remote MCP service.

Route Best fit Connection model Who configures it
SQLcl MCP Server A developer or team already using Oracle SQLcl connections The MCP server establishes and manages connections configured as named or saved SQLcl connections You configure SQLcl and the MCP client; client-specific steps depend on the MCP client
ORDS MCP An environment already using Oracle REST Data Services and administrator-managed pools An authenticated /mcp endpoint exposes authorized database targets associated with ORDS direct database pools An ORDS administrator enables and configures the endpoint, pools, and privileges
OCI Database Tools MCP Server Supported Oracle cloud database connections where a managed MCP service is preferred A remote MCP service using Streamable HTTP and OCI IAM Identity Domains integration An OCI administrator or authorized user creates the service resource and configures authentication and access roles

These options are not interchangeable. Check database deployment and version support, network reachability, transport, authentication, the client’s supported MCP connection types, and which targets and tools should be exposed. Oracle’s SQLcl guide is versioned 25.3; the ORDS guide used here is versioned 26.2. OCI Database Tools MCP documentation was updated August 6, 2026, and its setup tutorial July 28, 2026. Confirm current requirements in the SQLcl MCP Server guide, ORDS MCP guide, and OCI Database Tools MCP overview before implementation.

Prepare database access safely

Decide what the AI client should be able to do before connecting it. The tools exposed by an MCP implementation may support SQL execution, PL/SQL calls, or other operations. Natural-language interaction does not make database access read-only.

  • Create or select a database identity with only the privileges required for the intended work.
  • Expose only the required database targets, schemas, and tools. Check that the configured identity cannot access unrelated data.
  • Test first with non-production data and a restricted account, then review the actual tools and permissions available to the client.
  • Keep credentials and tokens out of shared configuration and source control. Follow the chosen product’s current credential-handling guidance; there is no single secret-storage method established for every route.
  • For a remotely reachable endpoint, apply the identity, network, monitoring, and auditing controls appropriate to the deployment.

Oracle’s ORDS guidance warns: “Granting a large language model (LLM) access to your database can expose sensitive data if the LLM is configured with excessive privileges.” See Oracle’s ORDS MCP security guidance.

Connect through SQLcl MCP Server

SQLcl MCP uses database connections already configured in SQLcl as named or saved connections. Set up and verify the SQLcl connection first; then configure your MCP client using the current SQLcl instructions and that client’s documented connection format.

  1. Install and configure SQLcl for the database you intend to use.
  2. Create a named or saved SQLcl connection using the current SQLcl documentation, then connect with it directly to verify the database login and reachability.
  3. Configure the MCP client to start or connect to SQLcl MCP Server as described for that specific client.
  4. In the client, inspect the discovered tools and test only the operations the restricted database identity is meant to perform.

Oracle’s SQLcl MCP Server documentation establishes the named or saved connection model. It does not make one client’s JSON configuration universal: check the MCP client’s own current instructions rather than copying a configuration intended for a different client.

Connect to an ORDS MCP endpoint

ORDS MCP is an administrator-configured server endpoint, not a local process that a client can use without server-side preparation. An ORDS administrator must enable and configure MCP and the intended direct database pool. Clients connect to the authenticated /mcp endpoint and discover only the database targets authorized for them.

  1. Ask the ORDS administrator to enable ORDS MCP and configure the intended direct database pool and privileges.
  2. Obtain the ORDS host and authenticated /mcp endpoint, and confirm that it is reachable from the MCP client.
  3. Check that the client supports the endpoint’s configured authentication and MCP connection method.
  4. Configure the client for that endpoint, then verify that its discovered targets and tools are the intended ones.
  5. Review the database account’s privileges and the schemas, tables, or procedures it can reach.

For the endpoint and pool model, see Oracle’s ORDS MCP documentation and its ORDS MCP security guidance. The client’s exact configuration depends on its authentication support and the server configuration.

Set up OCI Database Tools MCP Server

OCI Database Tools MCP Server is a managed remote option for supported Oracle cloud database connections. Oracle documents Streamable HTTP connectivity and OAuth 2.0 integration with OCI IAM Identity Domains. Its overview lists Oracle Database 19c and Oracle AI Database 26ai among the underlying versions supported for Database Tools connections; check current service and region requirements for your tenancy before relying on availability.

  1. In OCI Console, navigate to Developer Services, open the Database Tools section, and select Model Context Protocol Servers.
  2. Create an MCP server and choose the relevant database connection and authentication configuration. Oracle’s tutorial describes password-based and token-based connection choices.
  3. Set OAuth options and user or group application roles as needed. Decide whether the optional Object Storage support for asynchronous operations is appropriate.
  4. Configure the MCP client to connect to the created server over remote Streamable HTTP using the selected authentication flow or token.
  5. Verify connectivity and inspect assigned roles and available tools to confirm the intended access boundary.

The service includes built-in tools and supports custom SQL and PL/SQL tools. Check Oracle’s current OCI Database Tools MCP Server overview and setup tutorial for current tenancy, identity-domain, region, and client-specific requirements. Console labels and options can change.

Verify the connection and limit what it can do

A successful connection means more than an MCP client showing a server as available. Confirm both the database path and the access boundary.

  • Check that the client discovers the expected server tools and no unintended database targets.
  • Use a restricted account to test the intended query or operation, and confirm that unrelated schemas or privileged operations are not accessible.
  • For ORDS or OCI remote access, verify that the endpoint’s authentication and network controls work from the client’s environment.
  • Review the configured identity and roles whenever you add a database, schema, tool, or user group.

Oracle’s SQLcl guidance, ORDS documentation, and OCI service documentation describe distinct implementations. Do not assume that transport, authentication, available tools, or client configuration carry over from one route to another.

Troubleshoot common connection problems

The client cannot find the SQLcl MCP server

First confirm SQLcl is installed and that the named or saved database connection works outside the MCP client. Then compare the client setup with its own current instructions and Oracle’s SQLcl guide. A configuration example written for another MCP client may not work unchanged.

An ORDS /mcp endpoint is unreachable

Ask the ORDS administrator to confirm MCP is enabled, the intended direct database pool is configured, and the endpoint is reachable from the client’s network. Check that the client supports the endpoint’s authentication method. ORDS MCP requires server-side setup.

Authentication fails

Identify which route is in use before changing credentials: SQLcl relies on its configured connections, ORDS uses an authenticated endpoint, and OCI Database Tools uses its configured identity and OAuth integration. Confirm the credential or token, selected authentication flow, and assigned roles using that product’s current documentation.

The connection works but expected data or tools are missing

Check the database identity’s grants, the targets authorized by ORDS or OCI roles, and the tools enabled for the MCP server. A connected client cannot use data or tools that have not been exposed to it.

The client exposes more access than intended

Stop using the broad identity, reduce database privileges and exposed targets or tools, and retest with a restricted account. Do not treat a natural-language interface as a permission boundary; the underlying database grants and server configuration define what can be reached.

If your task also needs website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it does not connect to Oracle databases. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cookie and consent handling accepts the banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with the response identifying page verdict and billing status in headers. MCP tools include take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Keep these other Oracle MCP projects distinct

Oracle’s GitHub MCP repository contains reference implementations intended for exploration, prototyping, and learning; do not treat an example server there as equivalent to SQLcl MCP, ORDS MCP, or the managed OCI service. Oracle’s Oracle Database Documentation MCP Server is also a separate tool: it builds a local documentation index and runs an MCP process in stdio or HTTP mode, but does not itself connect an AI client to a live application database.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Oracle MCP option should I use?

Use SQLcl MCP if you want to use SQLcl’s named or saved connections, ORDS MCP if an administrator manages the authenticated endpoint and pools, or OCI Database Tools MCP Server if its managed remote service supports your cloud database and region.

Does Oracle Database Documentation MCP Server connect to my live database?

No. It searches a locally built Oracle documentation index; it is separate from MCP routes that expose a live application database.
