To connect an internet radio server to YouTube Live, route the station’s program audio into an encoder, add a video source, and send the encoder’s audio-video output to YouTube with the live stream’s ingestion URL and stream key. YouTube accepts an audio-video feed, so radio audio alone is not enough; a static visual can work if the encoder sends it as video. The exact step for getting audio out of the radio server depends on its software, operating system, and output path.

What you need before you start

  • A radio audio output: identify how the station’s server or playback chain exposes its program audio. It may be an output in the radio software or a feed from another part of the station system; the appropriate capture method depends on that setup.
  • An encoder: it must accept the radio audio, combine it with video, and send a live feed to YouTube. The video can be a suitable static image or another visual source; a camera is not required by YouTube’s documented ingestion requirements.
  • A YouTube live stream: create or select one in Live Control Room so you can retrieve its ingestion URL and stream key.
  • Enough upload capacity: check the available upload speed and choose a video bitrate that fits it. YouTube publishes recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec; use the row matching your chosen settings rather than assuming one bitrate works for every stream. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

YouTube’s documentation describes the encoder-to-YouTube stage, not a universal way to capture audio from every internet-radio server. If you do not know how to expose the station’s program feed, first check that server’s audio output options and documentation for your specific operating system and configuration.

Connect the radio audio and video in the encoder

1. Route the station’s program audio

Select the radio server’s actual program output as the encoder’s audio input. Verify that the encoder’s audio meter responds while the station is playing. If it does not, the issue is upstream of YouTube: check the selected output, input device or feed, and any routing or permissions required by the station software. The exact menu names and capture steps vary by server and operating system.

2. Add a video source

Choose a video source in the encoder even if the broadcast is audio-first. You can use a static visual or another appropriate video input; the essential requirement is that the encoder sends video along with the radio audio. YouTube’s LiveStreams API identifies a missing video stream as a noVideoStream issue. YouTube LiveStreams API stream health documentation.

3. Check the outgoing audio format

For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its advanced encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps for stereo audio. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that every radio-server output or encoder preset will use those values automatically. YouTube encoder settings.

Create or select the YouTube live stream

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  2. Retrieve the stream’s ingestion URL and stream key (also called the stream name in some interfaces). Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot.
  3. In the encoder, enter the URL and key in their designated fields. If it provides only one server field, YouTube’s API documentation describes the combined form as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; follow the encoder’s own field format.
  4. Confirm that the selected YouTube stream and the encoder are using the same current URL and key. If the encoder offers a backup ingestion address, use it only when configured and appropriate for your workflow.

The YouTube API exposes the primary ingestion address and stream name through cdn.ingestionInfo. For ordinary live encoder ingestion, YouTube recommends RTMPS. LiveStreams API.

Choose a protocol and encoder settings

Use RTMPS for a typical radio simulcast

RTMPS is RTMP carried through TLS. YouTube recommends it for ordinary live content. The endpoint and path must be correct; RTMPS uses port 443 and the connection must send SNI for the server hostname. A wrong path, hostname, or key can prevent the encoder from connecting even when the radio audio is working. YouTube encoder settings and Google for Developers: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Use HLS or DASH only when your workflow calls for them

Protocol When it may fit Documented trade-off
RTMPS General-purpose encoder ingestion, including workflows where lower latency matters and the encoder supports it. Encrypted RTMP; correct endpoint, path, TLS on port 443, and SNI hostname are required.
HLS An encoder workflow that specifically requires HLS ingestion or supported higher-end codecs. Encrypted and supports H.264 and HEVC; segment-based, so it is not suited to ultra-low latency.
DASH A specialized encoder workflow that needs its supported codec features. Encrypted; supports H.264 and VP9, and is generally higher-latency than RTMP because it is segment-based.

These protocol characteristics are described in YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison. A radio audio source by itself does not require HLS or DASH.

Set the video encoding

  • Codec: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video. Confirm the selected codec is supported by both the encoder and the chosen ingestion workflow.
  • Rate control: use CBR, as specified in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
  • Resolution and bitrate: choose a resolution suitable for the visual and available upload capacity, then use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for that resolution, frame rate, and codec. There is no single correct bitrate for every station.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Use a frame rate the encoder and content can sustain.
  • Keyframes: set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not results from a test of a particular station. See the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

Test the feed, then start the broadcast

  1. Start sending the encoder feed before making the broadcast public or starting the scheduled event, following the controls shown in Live Control Room.
  2. Check YouTube’s stream preview and health messages. Confirm that video is present, the radio audio is audible, and the expected visual appears.
  3. Test representative material: include the kind of audio and video the broadcast will use, not just a silent or idle screen. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual stream.
  4. Start or schedule the broadcast in YouTube when the feed is healthy, and keep monitoring the encoder and YouTube’s status during transmission.

YouTube automatically transcodes an ingested live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a valid, stable encoder feed. Review YouTube’s encoder guidance and stream health documentation if the preview or status reports a problem.

Troubleshoot common connection problems

Symptom Likely check What to do
No data or stream remains inactive The encoder may be sending to a different stream, URL, or key, or may not be sending at all. Confirm the currently selected stream in Live Control Room and compare its ingestion URL and key with the encoder fields. Check that the encoder is actually transmitting.
Connection or TLS error RTMPS endpoint, path, port, or SNI hostname may be incorrect. Verify the exact RTMPS address and path, port 443, and SNI server hostname. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS requirements.
No audio The station output may not reach the encoder, or the outgoing codec may be unsupported. Check the program feed and encoder input meter first; then confirm AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Inspect YouTube’s health messages for missing or unsupported audio.
No video The encoder may be sending audio only or its video source may not be active. Enable and verify a video source in the encoder. An audio-only radio feed does not satisfy YouTube’s video-stream requirement.
Buffering or poor stream health Upload capacity, bitrate, sample rate, or keyframe timing may not match the configuration. Run an upload speed check, use the bitrate recommendation for the selected video settings, verify audio settings, and set keyframes to two seconds (no more than four). Use YouTube’s health messages to narrow down the fault.

Plan recurring broadcasts carefully

YouTube’s API distinguishes the stream carrying the incoming feed from the broadcast event viewers see. A stream can be reused for recurring broadcasts, and YouTube documents a 24/7 feed as a use case alongside a separate broadcast. In the documented single-encoder pattern, each YouTube channel needs its own stream. See YouTube’s live broadcasts API guide and the live streams guide.

Before rebroadcasting recorded material, make sure you have the necessary rights to the audio and visuals and that the stream complies with YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. A technically successful feed does not establish permission to broadcast the material.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does YouTube Live accept an audio-only internet radio stream?

No. The encoder must send video with the radio audio; a static visual is one possible video source.

Can I reuse a YouTube stream for recurring broadcasts?

YouTube’s API guide describes reusing a stream for recurring broadcasts; the broadcast event and the stream carrying the feed are separate API resources.
