Connect the voice assistant to a server-side integration that calls Shopify’s APIs: use the Storefront API for customer-facing product discovery and shopping, and the GraphQL Admin API for merchant-authorized inventory data. Keep Admin API credentials on the server, grant only the scopes the app needs, and use webhooks to update any local catalog or availability cache.
Choose the Shopify API for the assistant’s job
The right API depends on whether the assistant is acting as a shopper-facing guide or accessing merchant-side store data. Shopify’s app API overview distinguishes the buyer-facing Storefront API from the GraphQL Admin API, which handles administrative resources such as inventory.

For a buyer-facing assistant, start with the Storefront API. Add Admin API access only if the integration genuinely needs merchant-side data or actions. Shopify recommends the GraphQL Admin API for new apps rather than the legacy REST Admin API.

A practical flow is: the voice interface interprets a request, your application backend checks it against Shopify data, and the backend returns a response or carries out an allowed commerce action. The language model should not be the authority for product identity, variant selection, stock status, or cart changes; validate those against Shopify data in application code.

- Define the permitted tasks. Decide whether the assistant only searches and recommends products, supports shopping actions, or also needs administrative inventory information. This determines which API and permissions are necessary.
- Set up Shopify app authorization for merchant-side access. For Admin API calls, the app acts on the merchant’s behalf and is limited to the scopes the merchant approved. Request the smallest set that supports the integration. Shopify documents the access token in the
X-Shopify-Access-Tokenheader; send it from your protected server, not from a browser, buyer-facing client, or model prompt. See Shopify’s app authentication documentation. - Call the Storefront API for buyer-facing features. Shopify documents tokenless queries for basic access and public or private access tokens for additional features. Public tokens are intended for buyer-side exposure; private tokens belong in a server context. Confirm which features and access method your implementation requires in the current Storefront API reference.
- Pin a supported API version. Use a versioned Storefront API endpoint and choose a version supported by your integration rather than relying on a moving
latestlabel. Check Shopify’s current reference when implementing or upgrading because available version labels change. - Validate every proposed action. Resolve a spoken request to Shopify product and variant identifiers, check the relevant data, and confirm that a cart action is valid before carrying it out. Treat the model’s interpretation as input, not as proof that a product exists or is available.
Keep product and inventory data fresh
If the assistant relies on a local index or cache, subscribe to the relevant product and inventory webhooks. Shopify describes webhooks as a way for an app to receive store changes instead of repeatedly polling, and documents inventory-level update events. Use verified webhook deliveries to invalidate or refresh affected records, then make follow-up API reads where the event does not provide everything the assistant needs.
A webhook-driven cache is not a guarantee that a spoken availability answer will match stock at the moment a customer completes a purchase. The notification mechanism does not establish a particular freshness window or eliminate timing races. Decide how recent cached information must be for each answer, and query Shopify or apply stricter checks when the promise requires fresher data. Avoid describing availability as real-time unless the integration actually supports that standard.

Do not confuse custom voice integration with Shopify-managed AI discovery
Shopify Catalog is a separate product-discovery path for participating AI channels, not a one-click connector for every custom voice assistant. Shopify says eligible products can be discovered through Catalog and that product information, including availability and pricing, is continuously updated for activated channels. Eligibility and channel setup apply, and Shopify also describes discovery through methods such as crawling and feeds. Details are in the Shopify Catalog and product discovery documentation.
Shopify’s Storefront API Learning Kit identifies voice commerce as a use case for API-powered commerce. That supports using the Storefront API for a custom buyer-facing experience; it does not establish that Shopify supplies a universal connector for a particular voice-agent platform.
