Connect the TV’s audio output to the soundbar’s matching input: TV Optical OUT to soundbar Optical IN, or TV analog audio OUT to soundbar analog IN. Then select the matching soundbar input and, if needed, choose external speakers in the TV’s audio settings. The right cable depends on the ports on both devices, so check their labels before connecting.

Check which connections your TV and soundbar support

Inspect the rear or side panels of both devices and check their manuals if a port label is unclear. The TV needs an audio output, and the soundbar needs a compatible audio input. Connect output to input—not output to output or input to input.

If both devices have HDMI ARC or eARC, Sony’s connection guide prioritizes that option over optical, then optical over analog when the ports match. If you are choosing only between optical and RCA, use optical when both devices have matching optical ports; use analog RCA or a stereo-mini-to-RCA cable only when the devices have compatible analog connections. Sony’s connection-method guide explains the port-based choice.

Connect with an optical cable

  1. Find the TV port labeled Optical Digital Audio Out, Digital Audio Out (Optical), or similar, and the soundbar port labeled Optical In.
  2. Connect an optical audio cable from the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input.
  3. Turn on both devices and set the soundbar input to TV or Optical, using the label that matches its controls.
  4. In the TV’s sound or audio-output settings, select Audio System, External Speakers, or the closest equivalent if that option is available. If there is no sound, try setting the TV’s Digital Audio Out format to PCM.

TV menu labels and available options vary by model and software version. If the names differ, use the manual for your TV. Sony’s optical connection troubleshooting guide includes the PCM and audio-output checks.

Connect with analog RCA cables

  1. Confirm that the TV has an analog audio output and the soundbar has an analog audio input. Red-and-white RCA ports are one common arrangement, but not every TV or soundbar has them.
  2. Use an RCA-to-RCA cable only when both devices have matching RCA audio ports. If one device has a stereo-mini audio output and the other has RCA inputs, use a stereo-mini-to-RCA cable arrangement that matches those ports.
  3. Connect the TV audio output to the soundbar analog input, then select Analog or AUX on the soundbar.
  4. If the TV provides an audio-output setting, set it to send sound through the relevant output. The setting and whether one is needed depend on the model.

Sony’s soundbar connection instructions and connection overview describe optical and analog arrangements; check your own device documentation if its connectors differ.

What optical and RCA connections do—and do not—provide

Optical carries digital audio; RCA carries stereo analog audio. Neither is universally available on every TV or soundbar, so port compatibility determines whether either method will work. Match the TV output to the soundbar input, directly or with the cable arrangement specified for those ports.

  • 【Professional Input Signal Processing】Analog to digital audio converter provides professional 24Bit/192KHz sampling rate, avoiding distortion of the original signal. Optical input supports signal processing up to 32, 44.1, 48, 96, 192 sample rates, and 24-bit bit streams
  • 【Plug and Play】SPDIF to RCA converter works great with HDTVs, set-top boxes, DVD/Blu-Ray players and game consoles. (NOTE: It is incompatible with 5.1 channel signal such as Dolby AC3, please adjust the audio output to PCM before use.)
  • 【Note】Before using the product, adjust the audio output format of the TV to PCM (Device Home→System Settings→Picture and Sound→Sound Settings→Digital Audio Output→PCM), and Volume can only be adjusted on the output device, not via the TV remote control. In addition, the product does not support connection to headphones

Optical-only wiring does not provide HDMI-dependent functions such as power interlock or TV-remote volume control, according to Sony. If those controls matter, check whether both devices support HDMI ARC or eARC and consider using that connection instead. Sony’s connection instructions describe these optical limitations.

If there is no sound

  • Check the cable and ports: Make sure the cable is fully seated, undamaged, and runs from the TV’s audio output to the soundbar’s corresponding input.
  • Check the soundbar: Select TV/Optical for an optical connection or Analog/AUX for RCA. Confirm it is not muted and raise its volume.
  • Check the TV: Select Audio System or the closest external-audio option where available, and confirm the TV volume is not muted.
  • For optical, try PCM: Change the TV’s Digital Audio Out format to PCM if sound is absent or the soundbar cannot decode the selected format.
  • Restart both devices: If the connection and settings are correct but the problem continues, power-reset the TV and soundbar, then check their model-specific instructions and available updates.

Sony lists cable condition, input selection, TV output settings, PCM, and restarting among its troubleshooting checks; menu options still depend on the TV model. See its no-sound support guidance for further steps.
