To connect cable directly to a TV, run a coaxial cable from the cable wall jack to the TV’s ANT/CABLE input, set the TV’s tuner to Cable, and run an automatic channel scan. This works only when the cable provider supports direct tuning on your service; if it requires a set-top box, the TV cannot replace it with a scan.

Connect the cable wall jack to the TV

  1. Find the TV’s coaxial input. It is commonly labeled ANT/CABLE, CABLE/ANT, or something similar. Check the TV’s manual if the label is unclear.
  2. Connect a coaxial cable between the active cable wall jack and the TV’s coaxial input. Philips specifies a 75-ohm coaxial cable for this connection and notes that one is not included with its TV; check your own TV documentation for its requirements (Philips connection documentation).
  3. Tighten the connectors securely at both ends. A splitter or signal amplifier is not established as necessary for this basic setup.

Set the TV to Cable and scan

The TV’s built-in tuner must be configured for cable service, not an over-the-air antenna. Menu wording and locations depend on the TV model and software version.

  1. Open the TV’s channel, tuner, or broadcast settings.
  2. Select Cable as the tuner or signal source. Do not select Antenna for a cable wall jack.
  3. Choose the automatic channel scan or channel installation option. On TCL Google TV, the instructions specify Cable tuner mode and the Digital & Analog channel type; Philips likewise directs users connecting at a wall jack to select the appropriate cable installation mode and scan (TCL Google TV scan instructions; Philips channel installation guidance).
  4. Let the scan finish, then use the TV’s channel controls to check what it found. A scan searches for channels the TV can tune; it does not activate a cable outlet or confirm your account’s service permissions.

Why a direct connection may not find channels

A coaxial input and built-in tuner do not guarantee that a TV can decode the channels in a particular cable subscription. Some cable systems permit a TV to connect and scan directly, while many require a provider-supplied set-top box (Roku support). Providers may also require a box for the service being used (TCL guidance). As a result, a direct scan is not a reliable way to determine whether a wall outlet is active or whether a subscription supports tuning without a box.

When direct tuning is supported

If your provider permits it, the TV’s tuner handles channel tuning after you connect the wall jack and scan in Cable mode. The channels found depend on the service and what the TV can tune; a direct connection is not a guarantee that every channel in a paid package will be available.

When the provider requires a box

Connect the provider’s box to the TV using a supported connection such as HDMI. Turn on the box, then select the HDMI input used for that connection. The box handles channel tuning, so you do not need to scan the TV’s built-in cable tuner for this setup (Philips Google TV connection guidance; Roku support).

Setup Who tunes the channels TV connection and setup
Direct cable, if the provider permits it The TV’s built-in tuner Wall jack to ANT/CABLE; choose Cable mode and scan
Provider requires a set-top box The provider’s box Connect the box to a supported TV input, such as HDMI, and select that input

Fix a scan that finds no channels

  • Check both cable connections. Make sure the coaxial cable is firmly attached at the wall jack and the TV.
  • Check tuner mode. Confirm that the TV is set to Cable rather than Antenna, then run the automatic scan again (TCL Google TV scan instructions; Philips channel installation guidance).
  • Ask the cable provider about the service. If the scan still finds nothing, ask whether that wall outlet is active and whether your account and service allow direct tuning or require a box. The TV cannot establish those provider-specific facts.
  • If you are using a box, check the external input instead. Confirm that the box is powered on and select the TV input to which it is connected; a built-in tuner scan is not the setup for box-based service (Philips Google TV connection guidance; Roku support).

What you need for the direct connection

The basic direct setup requires a coaxial cable if you do not already have one. Match its connectors to the wall jack and TV input, and choose a length that reaches without strain. Philips specifies 75-ohm coaxial cable for its documented connection (Philips connection documentation); consult your TV or provider if you are unsure what cable is appropriate. A splitter, amplifier, new TV, or generic streaming device is not established as a fix for a provider requirement to use a set-top box.
