Connect the travel router to the hotel’s Wi-Fi in repeater, client, or WISP mode, then complete the hotel’s sign-in page from a phone or computer connected to the router. After authorization, the router shares the connection through its own Wi-Fi network. The exact menu names vary by brand and firmware; the steps below use GL.iNet as a documented example.

What the captive portal does

A captive portal is an internet sign-in or acceptance page shown by a public hotspot before it grants internet access. GL.iNet Router Docs 4 defines it as: “A captive portal is a Web page where public hotspots require users to view and interact with the page before Internet access is granted.” This means your device can connect to the hotel’s Wi-Fi while still being blocked from the internet until you finish the portal flow.

Connect the router and complete the hotel sign-in

  1. Power on the router and connect to its Wi-Fi. Use a phone or computer to join the network name printed on the router or shown in its setup instructions. On first setup, follow the initial admin setup to create an administrator password.
  2. Open the router’s admin panel. For GL.iNet routers, the documented default address is http://192.168.8.1. Other brands may use another address; check the router’s label or manual.
  3. Join the hotel network. In the GL.iNet interface, go to INTERNET → Repeater, scan for the hotel’s Wi-Fi name (SSID), select it, and connect. Repeater mode joins the existing Wi-Fi; in GL.iNet’s documented default WISP arrangement, the router creates its own subnet for your devices. See the GL.iNet internet and repeater guide. If the hotel network does not appear, the router may not support the channel the hotel uses.
  4. Complete the hotel’s portal requirements. The hotel may ask you to accept terms, enter a room number or access code, or provide another sign-in detail. Follow the property’s own page; portal screens and requirements differ.
  5. If no sign-in page appears, trigger it from a connected device. Connect the phone or computer to the router’s Wi-Fi, open a browser, and try an ordinary web page. On GL.iNet firmware v4.6 and later, the feature is named Auto-Enable Login Mode for Public Hotspots; the router may prompt to enable it when it detects a captive portal. Follow the resulting login link or prompt. See the GL.iNet public-hotspot instructions and GL.iNet captive-portal FAQ.
  6. Confirm access from a client device. Check the router’s status for an internet connection, then load a web page on a phone or computer connected to the router’s local Wi-Fi. If access later stops, the hotel’s authorization may have expired and you may need to complete the portal again.

These GL.iNet labels and the admin address are examples, not universal instructions. Check the manual for your exact router model and firmware.

Troubleshoot a portal that will not load

Try the login mode and browser flow first

Make sure the client device is connected to the router’s Wi-Fi, disconnect and reconnect to that network, and open a browser page to prompt redirection. If your router has a public-hotspot or captive-portal login feature, enable it and follow its instructions.

Check VPN, DNS, or filtering features

A VPN client, DNS filtering, or an ad-blocking service can interfere with portal detection or sign-in. GL.iNet’s older v3 guide suggests temporarily disabling DNS rebinding attack protection, VPN clients, or AdGuard Home where those features are enabled, then trying the portal again. These are GL.iNet-specific troubleshooting suggestions; only change equivalent settings if your router offers them, and restore protections you need after login. The GL.iNet v4 guide says Login Mode changes DNS to automatic while some services are suspended.

Handle device registration or MAC-address limits carefully

Some hotels associate authorization with the network MAC address of a registered device. GL.iNet documents connecting a phone to the hotel Wi-Fi, recording the MAC address that phone uses for that particular network, and cloning it to the router’s upstream connection. Modern phones may use a randomized or private MAC address, so the address shown for the hotel network can differ from the hardware address in general device information. If you clone the phone’s address to the router, disconnect the phone from the hotel network while the router uses that same address; two devices using one MAC simultaneously can cause conflicts. If cloning does not work, ask hotel staff whether they can register the router’s factory MAC address. See the GL.iNet captive-portal FAQ and GL.iNet v3 hotspot guide.

Ask the hotel if access remains blocked

Hotel policies and portal rules vary. Ask the front desk whether personal routers are allowed and whether the router must be registered. A travel router cannot guarantee access if the property blocks routers or requires a sign-in process it cannot support.

Understand the privacy trade-off

GL.iNet documents that its public-hotspot Login Mode switches DNS to automatic and suspends some services, which may expose network activity to the hotspot provider. The documentation does not quantify that exposure. If you use a router VPN, verify that it reconnects after portal sign-in before sending sensitive traffic; the hotel portal may need to work before the VPN can connect, and VPN behavior depends on the particular setup. A travel router by itself does not make public Wi-Fi safe.

What to check when choosing a travel router

Before buying or packing a router for hotel use, check its manual and firmware documentation for the capabilities that matter to this setup:

  • Whether it can join upstream Wi-Fi in repeater, client, or WISP mode.
  • Whether its firmware detects captive portals or includes a public-hotspot login mode.
  • How easily you can open its admin panel from a phone or laptop.
  • Whether you can manage the upstream MAC address if a hotel registers devices, including the implications of private or randomized MAC addresses.
  • Whether the router supports the Wi-Fi bands and channels used by the hotel networks you expect to encounter.

GL.iNet documents its Login Mode for firmware v4.6 and later; availability and labels can differ by model and firmware. The steps here describe the manufacturer’s documented workflow, not a hands-on comparison of routers. A GL.iNet travel router is one relevant option, but confirm the specific model supports the required features before relying on it.
