Bluetooth Classic SPP and Wi-Fi are transports; neither makes an incompatible printer understand the data. Check the exact printer manual and ESP32 chip documentation before wiring or choosing a wireless method.
Choose a connection the printer and ESP32 both support
Record the exact printer model, its interface, the ESP32 chip and software framework, and whether the printer is wired directly or on the local network. A UART example for one printer does not establish another model’s pinout, voltage levels, baud rate, or command support.
| Connection | Verify first | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| TTL UART | Printer manual, logic levels, power supply, ground, baud rate, and connector | Direct and straightforward when serial access is documented; requires matching the electrical signals. |
| Bluetooth Classic SPP | SPP support on the printer and exact ESP32 chip, plus pairing behavior | Wireless serial-style byte transport; it is not Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). |
| Wi-Fi network printer | Printer address, supported network protocol and port, and raw ESC/POS support | Flexible on a local network, but printer services and settings vary by model. |
| Wi-Fi client to ESP32, then wired printer | ESP32 receiver protocol, data framing and security, plus the printer-side interface | Lets clients submit jobs to the ESP32, but requires a receiver service and forwarding logic. |
Bluetooth: confirm Classic SPP, not just BLE
Espressif’s Arduino-ESP32 Bluetooth documentation says that BluetoothSerial provides Bluetooth Classic support on SoCs that include it. Its example checks for CONFIG_BT_SPP_ENABLED and notes that SPP is available only for the ESP32 chip. Check the exact chip and framework version: support on one member of the ESP32 family does not establish support on another. The printer must also offer a compatible Bluetooth Classic SPP service; BLE-only pairing is not enough.
SPP acts like a virtual serial connection. Espressif’s ESP-IDF SPP API documentation describes the serial-style data link. Once connected, the ESP32 sends bytes over that link, but the printer still needs to understand those bytes as text and printer commands.

The package also includes 10 test printing papers to get you started right away.
Wi-Fi: identify the printer’s actual network service
For an ESP32 connecting directly to a network printer, obtain the printer’s address and supported protocol and port from its configuration or manual. The third-party esc_pos_printer package documentation describes TCP port 9100 as a common default for network printers, not a universal setting. Verify the actual port and that the service accepts raw print data.
A different setup has a phone, computer, or other client send a job to a receiver running on the ESP32, which then forwards it to a locally attached printer. This requires you to define the receiver protocol, message framing, and security; it is not the same as connecting the ESP32 to a Wi-Fi printer.

UART: use the documented electrical interface
A printer with documented TTL UART can be a simple wired option. Conceptually, connect host TX to printer RX; connect printer TX to host RX only if you need printer responses or status; and share signal ground. The manual must establish the connector pins, signal voltage, baud rate, and separate printer power requirements.
Do not power a thermal printer from an ESP32 GPIO. Printer supply requirements are model-specific. The Circuit Digest PNP-500/RS203 example illustrates a particular TTL UART setup with separate printer power; it is not a universal wiring diagram. If the printer interface is RS-232 rather than TTL UART, do not connect it directly to ESP32 GPIO: use a suitable level-translating interface specified for the hardware.

Send printer bytes, not just a text string
ESC/POS is a command stream used by many receipt printers, but support varies by model. Check the printer manual for its command set, code pages, and text encoding. A printer may accept plain ASCII while rendering other characters incorrectly unless the appropriate encoding or code page is selected.
Epson’s ESC/POS command reference portal provides technical references, and its commands in code order index lists commands such as initialization (ESC @) and line feed (LF). Check the exact printer’s documentation before relying on any command; command behavior and support are model-specific.

Minimal test payload
For a printer that supports these ESC/POS commands and ASCII, the logical byte sequence is:
ESC @ initialize (if supported)
ESP32 test ASCII text
LF advance one line
In byte form, ESC is 0x1B and LF is 0x0A. Send the same payload through UART, Bluetooth SPP, or a network connection that accepts raw printer data. The transport carries the bytes; the printer’s command language determines how they are rendered. This is a minimal test pattern, not code guaranteed to work unchanged on every printer.

Implement the connection in this order
- Read the printer manual. Identify the interface, supported protocols, signal levels if wired, required power, and supported ESC/POS commands or text formats.
- Confirm the ESP32 capability. For Bluetooth, verify Classic SPP support on the exact chip and framework. For Wi-Fi, confirm the ESP32 and printer can reach each other on the intended network.
- Establish the transport. Wire documented UART signals, pair using SPP, or open a connection to the printer’s documented network service. Do not assume a port or pinout.
- Send a small ASCII job. If supported, send initialization, a short line, and line feed. Add non-ASCII text or formatting only after the basic output works.
- Check the result against the manual. If text is missing, garbled, or incomplete, separate transport problems from encoding and unsupported-command problems.
Troubleshoot by isolating the failure
- Nothing prints: Check printer readiness, paper, its power supply, and whether bytes reach the printer. For UART, verify common signal ground, TX/RX orientation, signal levels, and baud rate.
- Bluetooth does not compile or pair: Confirm the exact chip and framework support Bluetooth Classic SPP and that the printer offers SPP. BLE support alone does not establish SPP support.
- Bluetooth connects but output is garbled: Check the printer profile, text encoding, and whether application framing changes the raw command bytes.
- Wi-Fi connects but nothing prints: Confirm both devices are reachable on the intended network and verify the printer’s actual protocol and port instead of assuming TCP 9100.
- Some commands work and others do not: Compare each command with the exact printer model’s supported ESC/POS subset and encoding documentation.
