You can connect a Samsung Galaxy to a MacBook wirelessly with Quick Share, or by USB with Samsung Smart Switch when you need a backup or restore. For selected files you want available on both devices, use cloud storage. These methods serve different purposes: a USB connection does not necessarily make Galaxy storage browseable in Finder.
Choose the connection method for your task

Send files wirelessly with Quick Share
Samsung describes Quick Share as using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to send photos, videos, and documents. Its Canada support guide, updated April 24, 2026, lists Apple-device requirements of Quick Share app version 13.8.51.27 or later and Google Play services version 26.11.xx or later on the Galaxy. It lists iPhone 8 or later, iPad (5th generation or later), and MacBook (2020 or later) as supported Apple devices. These are requirements in that regional guide, not a guarantee that every Galaxy model or market is supported.
- Check that your Galaxy has the required Quick Share and Google Play services versions, and confirm availability for your model and region in Samsung’s Quick Share instructions.
- On the Galaxy, select the photo, video, or document, open the sharing options, and choose Quick Share.
- Choose the MacBook when it appears as a recipient and follow the prompts on both devices.
Samsung notes that Wi-Fi may turn off automatically during a Quick Share connection to an Apple device. Discovery may not work while Mobile Hotspot or certain Wi-Fi Direct or Wi-Fi Aware services are in use. If the Mac does not appear, connect the devices to a network and restart them, as Samsung suggests. The feature’s availability and timing can vary by market.
Back up or restore with Smart Switch over USB
Smart Switch for Mac is the documented Samsung route for backing up a Galaxy to a Mac and restoring a backup. Samsung’s UK instructions, updated June 19, 2026, require a USB cable that supports data transfers; a cable that only charges the phone will not be sufficient. Check the connector types on your Galaxy and Mac and use a suitable adapter if their ports do not match.

- Install and open Smart Switch on the Mac. Check Samsung’s current download information for Mac compatibility rather than relying on old minimum requirements listed in support articles.
- Connect the Galaxy with a data-capable USB cable.
- In Smart Switch, select Backup. If the phone asks for permission to access data, approve the prompt.
- To restore, connect the phone, open Smart Switch, and select Restore. Samsung’s instructions also explain how to choose an earlier backup when available.
Samsung says the default backup folder is /Users/[username]/Documents/Samsung/SmartSwitch/backup, unless you choose another location. Replace [username] with the Mac account’s folder name when locating the path.
Use cloud storage for selected files
If you want particular documents or photos available on both devices, cloud storage can be more convenient than making a full device backup. Samsung lists Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox as examples of providers. Upload or sync the files you need, then access them from the other device through that provider. This approach covers the files you select; it should not be treated as a complete Galaxy backup or as a way to preserve every app and setting.

What a USB connection does—and does not—provide
Do not assume that plugging a Galaxy into a Mac makes the phone’s internal storage appear in Finder. Samsung’s reviewed Mac guidance documents Smart Switch backup and restore, but does not establish universal Galaxy storage browsing in Finder over USB. Samsung’s US instructions for setting the phone’s USB notification to Transferring files or MTP describe browsing with a PC’s File Explorer, not a Mac’s Finder. The available documentation therefore does not support promising the same workflow on macOS.

A successful charging connection is not proof that the cable carries data. If Smart Switch does not recognize the phone, first try a cable specified for data transfer, check that the connector or adapter is seated correctly, and respond to any access prompt on the Galaxy.

Know what Smart Switch may not transfer
Smart Switch is useful for a backup or migration, but Samsung warns that some content cannot be transferred. The exclusions and limits can depend on the content and app:
- Secure or encrypted data, including WhatsApp chats in Samsung’s general backup guidance.
- DRM-protected content.
- App data stored on a service’s servers and some app credentials.
- Apps not sourced from the Play Store or apps without an equivalent in the destination store.
Before erasing, trading in, or resetting a phone, check the separate backup and transfer instructions for important apps and accounts. Samsung’s Smart Switch migration FAQ describes a Mac/PC route for moving from another Android phone: back up the old device on the computer, then restore that backup to the new Galaxy. That process is distinct from browsing a phone’s files on a Mac.
