Yes, you can pair an old DualShock 4 with a Steam Deck over Bluetooth, then use its motion sensor for gyro aiming or another motion control through Steam Input. Pairing only connects the controller: the game and its active Steam Input layout determine whether gyro controls work and how they behave.
How do I connect a PS4 controller to a Steam Deck?
- On the Deck, open Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is enabled. Valve says this general Bluetooth process applies to LCD and OLED models unless otherwise noted. Valve’s Steam Deck Bluetooth guide
- Put the DualShock 4 into pairing mode by holding PS + Share until its light flashes. Steam’s instructions identify the controller in the device list as Wireless Controller. - Choose Wireless Controller from the Deck’s Bluetooth device list and wait for it to connect.

How do you turn the DualShock 4’s gyro into an in-game control?
Once connected, configure the controller for the game you want to play. Steam Input can map the DualShock 4’s motion sensor to mouse movement or joystick input; for an aiming layout, gyro can move the camera while the sticks handle broader movement. Other motion bindings are possible, depending on the layout and game.
- Open the game’s page in your Steam library.
- Open its controller or control-layout settings to inspect the current layout, edit it, or browse community configurations. Steam’s guide to controller layouts
- Select or edit a layout that uses gyro, then choose the motion behavior that suits the game, such as gyro-to-mouse or gyro-to-joystick.
- Launch the game and adjust the layout if the motion feels too sensitive or does not behave as expected.
Valve has documented DualShock 4 motion-sensor autocalibration work and a fix for Sony DualShock accelerometer readings on the first Bluetooth connection. Those client notes establish that Steam has addressed controller motion processing; they do not promise identical performance in every game or layout. Will the PS4 controller use the game’s controls or Steam Input?
It depends on the game’s controller support and the active configuration. In a November 16, 2023 client update, Valve said PlayStation controllers default to a mode that routes them to a game’s built-in support when available, and to Steam Input when the game would otherwise not support them. For a particular game, check its support details and the layout shown in the library rather than assuming that pairing enables gyro automatically. Which layout should you choose?

The main benefit is using a controller you already own, with the option of configuring its motion sensor for games where gyro input is useful. Valve’s June 26, 2024 Steam update said controllers were used in as much as 15% of all Steam sessions, compared with about 5% in 2018. For controller sessions during the period discussed in that 2024 update, Valve reported 59% Xbox, 26% PlayStation, and 10% Steam Deck. These are dated Steam figures, not current 2026 usage data.
