If a Matter device will not connect, first check whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread, then confirm your smart-home system has the matching network support. A Matter hub that supports Wi-Fi or Ethernet does not automatically support Thread. Once the network and controller are right, retry setup with the device’s QR or numeric code; if it still fails, use the manufacturer’s model-specific recovery steps.
1. Find out whether the device uses Wi-Fi or Thread
Check the product label, packaging, manufacturer’s app, or manual for its connection type. Matter can run over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread, and the connection determines what infrastructure the device needs. Bluetooth may also be used during setup. The Connectivity Standards Alliance describes Matter as a protocol that runs over technologies including Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Thread, and Bluetooth in its August 2023 Matter Retail Messaging Guide.
- Wi-Fi Matter device: It needs access to the intended home Wi-Fi network.
- Thread Matter device: It needs an online, compatible Thread border router on the smart-home system you plan to use. A Matter hub that supports Wi-Fi or Ethernet may not support Thread.
- Ethernet: Some Matter devices use Ethernet, but follow the device maker’s instructions for its network connection.
For Thread, check the exact hub or controller and ecosystem compatibility before treating the accessory as faulty. Google’s Matter preparation guidance explains that a Thread device needs a Thread Border Router, and Google’s troubleshooting guide notes that some Matter hubs support only Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Amazon likewise advises checking for an online Thread-enabled device in its Matter setup instructions.
2. Check the phone, network, and controller
For a Wi-Fi device
- Make sure the router is on and the home network is working.
- Connect your phone to the intended home Wi-Fi network before setup. Apple recommends using the same Wi-Fi network as the accessory when troubleshooting an unresponsive Home app device; Amazon also advises checking the selected network and router connectivity.
- Keep the device powered and near enough to communicate during commissioning.
See Apple’s steps for an unresponsive HomeKit or Matter accessory and Amazon’s Wi-Fi connectivity checks.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a Thread device
- Confirm that the smart-home ecosystem you selected has a compatible Thread border router.
- Check that the border router is online and available to the same home setup.
- If setup reports “Can’t reach device,” treat that as a symptom to investigate—not proof of one particular cause. Recheck Thread support and connectivity before repeatedly changing Wi-Fi settings.
Google’s Matter troubleshooting guidance covers the “Can’t reach device” message and Thread requirements. Availability and compatibility depend on the exact controller, software, and ecosystem; verify current support for your equipment.
3. Retry setup with the device’s Matter code
Put the accessory into commissioning mode as its instructions describe, then open the compatible smart-home app you want to use. Scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric setup code. Apple documents code-based provisioning to Wi-Fi or Thread in its Matter support in iOS; Amazon’s Alexa instructions include QR scanning and numeric-code entry. The Connectivity Standards Alliance says setup can begin in the manufacturer’s app or a smart-home platform in its Matter Retail Messaging Guide.

If the code is missing, unreadable, or rejected, check the product and its current manufacturer instructions for the code location and commissioning requirements. Code locations and commissioning steps vary by model; do not assume the code is always on the device or that every accessory uses the same sequence.
4. Match the next step to where setup fails
| Failure point or message | What to check next |
|---|---|
| QR scan or numeric code is rejected | Confirm you are using the Matter code for that device, and follow the maker’s instructions for entering commissioning mode. |
| Network provisioning does not finish | For Wi-Fi, check the selected home network, router, and phone connection. For Thread, verify that an online compatible border router is available. |
| Discovery or reachability fails | Confirm the device is powered, the phone is on the intended local network, and the controller supports the device’s connection type. Treat messages such as “Could not contact Google” or “Can’t reach device” as clues, not a complete diagnosis. |
| Setup finishes, but the device shows “No Response” | Check power and network reachability, then use the platform’s accessory troubleshooting guidance. Apple recommends the same Wi-Fi network as the accessory when addressing an unresponsive device. |
Error wording differs by app and platform. For platform-specific guidance, see Google’s Matter troubleshooting page and Apple’s accessory response troubleshooting.

5. Restart the accessory, then use its exact recovery instructions
- Power-cycle the accessory and try commissioning again.
- If it remains unresponsive, check the manufacturer’s instructions for restarting it or restoring commissioning mode for the exact model.
- Use a factory reset only when the maker’s instructions call for it. Reset button combinations and timing vary; there is no universal Matter reset sequence.
Apple’s Home support specifically recommends disconnecting third-party Thread accessories from power for five minutes when troubleshooting an unresponsive accessory. That is Apple’s guidance for this troubleshooting case, not a general reset instruction for every Matter device. See Apple’s support article.
6. Add the device to another smart-home app
Matter is designed to let compatible devices work across smart-home platforms, but adding an already-connected accessory to another ecosystem may require the existing platform’s sharing or multi-admin flow and a valid setup code. The exact steps depend on the app and accessory. Consult the app’s instructions and the device maker’s guidance rather than assuming that repeating the first-time setup process will work. Google explains cross-platform setup and control in its Matter device setup and management guide; the Connectivity Standards Alliance also describes setup through smart-home platforms and manufacturer apps in its Matter Retail Messaging Guide.

When to contact the manufacturer
If the correct connection type, compatible controller, network, and setup code are all confirmed but commissioning still fails, contact the device manufacturer with the exact model, app, and error message. Its instructions are the authority for that model’s commissioning mode and reset procedure.
