To cast a MacBook to a TV, use AirPlay for a wireless connection or HDMI for a wired one. Choose Screen Mirroring to show your desktop, or use the AirPlay control in a video app to send only that video. For HDMI, connect the Mac to the TV’s HDMI input, then select the TV as the display or sound output if needed.
Choose the right way to connect
| Option | Use it when | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| AirPlay screen mirroring | You want the TV to show your Mac desktop, apps, or presentation. | A TV or connected receiver that supports AirPlay. The Mac and receiver may need to be on the same network, and the TV may display a code. |
| AirPlay video streaming | You want to send one video to the TV without showing your whole desktop. | A compatible receiver and an AirPlay control in the video app’s playback controls. |
| HDMI | You want a direct cable connection. | An HDMI cable and, if your MacBook does not have an HDMI port, an adapter that matches its port. |
AirPlay availability depends on the exact TV or receiver model. Apple documents Apple TV 4K and compatible smart TVs as destinations; check the documentation for your device rather than assuming every TV supports AirPlay. A wired HDMI connection requires a physical cable and may require an adapter. Apple’s documentation does not establish a universal speed or picture-quality advantage for either method. Apple’s AirPlay guidance and Mac HDMI instructions describe the options.
Mirror your MacBook screen with AirPlay
- Turn on the TV and its AirPlay receiver. The receiver may be built into the TV or be a connected Apple TV 4K.
- On macOS Big Sur or later, open Control Center in the menu bar and select Screen Mirroring. On macOS Catalina or earlier, select the AirPlay button in the menu bar.
- Select the TV or receiver from the available destinations.
- If the TV shows a code, enter it on your Mac.
- If prompted, choose whether to share a window, mirror the Mac display, or extend the display.
To stop, open Control Center > Screen Mirroring and select the current receiver. On older macOS versions, use the AirPlay menu and choose Turn AirPlay Off. Apple notes that the Mac and Apple TV may need to be connected to the same network. Apple’s Apple TV AirPlay instructions include the menu paths and connection details.

- Start the video on your MacBook.
- Find and select the AirPlay icon in the video’s playback controls.
- Choose the TV or Apple TV from the destination list.
- To end playback on the TV, use the AirPlay control in the app.
This sends the video rather than requiring you to mirror the entire desktop. The option depends on the app exposing an AirPlay control and on an available receiver; support may vary by app, title, or region. Apple’s AirPlay guide covers streaming from a Mac to Apple TV 4K or a smart TV.

Connect a MacBook to a TV with HDMI
- Check the ports on both devices. If the MacBook has HDMI, connect it directly. If it has USB-C or Thunderbolt, use a compatible HDMI adapter; older Macs may require an adapter or cable for Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort.
- Connect the HDMI cable to the Mac or adapter and to an HDMI input on the TV.
- If the TV does not switch automatically, use its input control to select the HDMI port you connected.
- On the Mac, follow any display prompt. To adjust the setup, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays and choose the available display arrangement, such as mirroring or extending.
- If the picture appears but sound still comes from the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound and select the HDMI device as the output.
HDMI capabilities vary by Mac model and connection. Check Apple’s specifications for your exact MacBook before expecting a particular resolution or refresh rate. Apple’s Mac HDMI guide covers port and adapter options, display specifications, and sound output; its TV-as-a-display instructions explain the wired setup.

The TV does not appear in Screen Mirroring
- Confirm that the TV or connected receiver supports AirPlay, is powered on, and is available as a destination.
- Check the network setup. Apple says the Mac and Apple TV may need to be on the same network.
- Confirm compatibility for the exact TV or receiver model; AirPlay support is not universal.

For the documented Apple TV AirPlay setup, Apple suggests adjusting AirPlay Display Underscan on Apple TV. This setting applies to that Apple TV path, not necessarily to other TVs or receivers.

- If the picture works but audio does not come from the TV, select the HDMI device under System Settings > Sound.
- If the display resolution or refresh rate is unexpected, check the specifications for your Mac model and the connection in use.
Apple’s model-specific display information is available in its HDMI connection guide. Its AirPlay instructions describe the Apple TV underscan setting.
