To connect a Mac to HDMI, first identify the Mac’s video port: use an HDMI cable for a built-in HDMI port, a compatible USB-C/Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter for USB-C or Thunderbolt 3/4/5, or a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter for older Thunderbolt 2 or Mini DisplayPort Macs. Then select the display’s HDMI input and configure it in macOS under System Settings > Displays.
Check your Mac’s port before choosing a cable
The connector determines what you need. To identify your exact model, open the Apple menu > About This Mac, then check its technical specifications. Macs in the same product family can have different ports, so verify the model rather than relying on its name alone. Apple’s Mac model identification guide explains where to find model information.
- HDMI port: Connect a standard HDMI cable directly from the Mac to the TV or monitor. Apple lists built-in HDMI on MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later (14- and 16-inch), Mac mini introduced in 2010 or later, Mac Studio introduced in 2022 or later, and Mac Pro introduced in 2013 or later. Some 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro models from 2012–2015 also have HDMI.
- USB-C or Thunderbolt 3, 4, or 5, with no HDMI port: Use an HDMI adapter compatible with the Mac. Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter is one option for compatible USB-C and Thunderbolt Macs; it provides HDMI, USB-A, and USB-C charging, and the ports can be used simultaneously.
- Thunderbolt 2 or Mini DisplayPort: Use a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter or cable. Thunderbolt 2 and Mini DisplayPort share a connector shape but are different technologies; Thunderbolt 2 supports Mini DisplayPort video output.
Apple’s port and display guidance is in Connect to HDMI from your Mac.
Match the connection to the resolution you want
The actual resolution and refresh rate depend on the Mac, adapter, cable, and display together. A connector that fits does not guarantee the display can run at its maximum mode. Check the specifications for the exact Mac and adapter before buying, especially for high-refresh-rate gaming or an 8K display.

| Connection or Mac group | Apple-listed maximum |
|---|---|
| Built-in HDMI on specified compatible MacBook Pro, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro models introduced in 2023 or later | Up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 240 Hz. Apple says adapters do not support these listed modes; connect directly to the Mac. |
| Built-in HDMI on Mac Studio introduced in 2022 or later, Mac mini introduced in 2018 or later, Mac Pro introduced in 2019 or later, and MacBook Pro introduced in 2021 or later | Up to 4K at 60 Hz. |
| Built-in HDMI on Mac mini introduced from 2012 through 2014, Mac Pro introduced in 2013, and MacBook Pro introduced from 2012 through 2015 | Up to 4K at 30 Hz. |
| Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter model A2119 on listed compatible Macs, including MacBook Air introduced in 2020 or later and Mac mini introduced in 2018 or later | 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz on specified devices, subject to Apple’s compatibility and software conditions; Apple lists 3840 × 2160 at 30 Hz for other devices and models. |
| Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter model A1621 | Up to 3840 × 2160 at 30 Hz or 1080p at 60 Hz. |
The adapter specifications are in About the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. Check the model number printed on the adapter; do not assume that two adapters with similar names have the same display limit. For 8K over built-in HDMI, Apple recommends an Ultra High Speed 48 Gbps HDMI cable.
Connect the Mac and set up the display
- Turn on the TV, monitor, or projector and connect it to power.
- Connect the HDMI cable directly to the Mac, or connect the HDMI cable through the adapter required by the Mac’s port.
- Use the display’s controls to select the HDMI input that matches the port you used.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. On older macOS versions, open Apple menu > System Preferences > Displays. Choose the resolution, refresh rate, and display arrangement you want. Some options for third-party displays may only be available in the display’s own menus.
Apple says a powered and properly connected display should be detected automatically. See Connect displays to your Mac for its setup guidance.

Fix common HDMI problems
The Mac does not detect the display, or the picture is low resolution
- Check that the display is powered on and set to the HDMI input you used.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends and reconnect the adapter, if present.
- Check whether the Mac, adapter, cable, and display support the resolution and refresh rate selected. Try a lower mode in System Settings > Displays if the display remains blank or limited.
- Confirm the exact Mac and adapter model specifications. Apple’s HDMI connection guide links to additional dark-screen and low-resolution troubleshooting.
There is no sound from the TV or monitor
HDMI can carry audio, but macOS must send sound to that device. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output and select the HDMI display. On older macOS versions, use System Preferences > Sound > Output. If you are testing a Mac mini, disconnect an audio device from its headphone jack; Apple recommends this when troubleshooting missing HDMI sound.
On compatible Macs, built-in HDMI supports up to 8-channel, 24-bit audio at 192 kHz, Dolby Surround 5.1, and traditional stereo. Some HDMI-equipped Macs do not support multichannel audio, so the available audio formats depend on the Mac.

The picture extends beyond the TV’s edges
This is usually an overscan setting. Adjust overscan or underscan in the TV or projector’s picture settings. macOS provides an underscan slider only for some display configurations and resolutions.

- Mac with built-in HDMI: A direct HDMI cable is the simplest connection. For 8K, follow Apple’s Ultra High Speed 48 Gbps cable guidance and confirm the Mac supports the target mode.
- USB-C or Thunderbolt Mac without HDMI: Choose an HDMI adapter that matches the Mac and the display mode you need. A multiport adapter is useful if you also need charging or USB-A, but verify its specific resolution and refresh-rate limits.
- Older Mac with Thunderbolt 2 or Mini DisplayPort: Choose a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter or cable and confirm that the Mac supports the intended display mode.
For the highest listed modes—8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 240 Hz on compatible Macs—Apple specifies a direct HDMI connection rather than an adapter.
