You can connect a supported Ecowitt weather station to Home Assistant over your local network using the built-in Ecowitt integration, then trigger automations from its sensor readings. Home Assistant sets up a callback endpoint, and the station sends measurements to it. The key caveat is that Ecowitt devices do not support HTTPS, so the endpoint must accept HTTP traffic from the station.

For the straightforward built-in local path, use Ecowitt. Do not confuse the built-in Ambient Weather Station integration with a local connection: it retrieves data through Ambient Weather Cloud. Home Assistant points to ecowitt2mqtt in ambient_weather mode as an alternative local route, not as part of the built-in integration.
How do I connect my Ecowitt weather station to Home Assistant?
Check your gateway and sensors
Set up the station and sensors first, and connect the gateway to a network that can reach your Home Assistant instance. Home Assistant’s documented working gateways include the GW1200 Wi-Fi Gateway, GW2000 Ethernet/Wi-Fi Gateway, and GW3000 Ethernet/Wi-Fi Gateway with data storage. Examples of documented sensors include the WH51 soil moisture sensor, WH40 rain gauge, WH57 lightning detector, and WS90 7-in-1 sensor. The available entities depend on the sensors you have connected.

The integration may expose readings such as temperature, humidity, pressure, wind, rainfall, UV and solar levels, soil moisture, lightning, air quality, and battery status, as applicable to your sensor set. Check the current compatibility list for your exact gateway and sensors before choosing hardware; support can change. If you are selecting equipment, a GW2000 gateway and WS90 sensor are examples on that list, not requirements for an existing setup.

Add the integration and configure the station
- In Home Assistant, open Settings > Devices & services > Add integration and add Ecowitt.
- Read the server IP address or host name, path, and port shown by Home Assistant for the callback endpoint.
- Open your Ecowitt app or gateway web interface and enter those values in the station’s custom server settings. Select the Ecowitt protocol, save the settings, and allow the station to send readings.
- Match the callback path exactly to the value Home Assistant shows. The mobile app may prepend a slash to the path, so follow the instruction displayed by the current Home Assistant UI.
- Check Home Assistant for the station’s device and sensor entities after readings arrive.
Account for the HTTP limitation
Ecowitt devices do not support TLS/SSL connections, so the Home Assistant endpoint must be accessible over HTTP from the station. If your instance is exposed only over HTTPS, Home Assistant’s documentation suggests configuring the network or reverse proxy to accept HTTP as well as HTTPS where needed. Keep that access limited to the trusted local network or another controlled network path; do not expose the callback endpoint to the public internet just to make the station connect. HTTP is unencrypted, so consider who can reach it and what else is permitted on that network.
How do I connect an Ambient Weather station locally?
The built-in Ambient Weather Station integration is cloud-based: it retrieves station data through Ambient Weather Cloud and requires both an Application Key and an API Key from the Ambient Weather dashboard. If you specifically want a local route, Home Assistant identifies ecowitt2mqtt in ambient_weather mode, with MQTT Discovery support, as an option. That is a separate bridge and MQTT setup rather than a local mode of the built-in Ambient Weather integration. See the integration documentation for the available details.

How do I make an automation when a weather reading crosses a value?
Choose the right threshold trigger
Once the station entities appear, open Settings > Automations & scenes and create or edit an automation. Add a trigger for the sensor you want to watch. If Home Assistant offers a measurement-specific trigger, such as “Temperature crossed threshold,” prefer it when applicable: Home Assistant says these triggers handle compatible units automatically. Otherwise, use Numeric state, choose the entity, and set an above threshold, a below threshold, or both to define a range. You can do this in the visual editor without writing YAML.

A numeric-state trigger fires when a reading crosses the configured threshold; it does not repeatedly fire simply because the value stays above or below it. If the reading is already beyond the limit when Home Assistant starts or the automation is enabled, the trigger waits for the value to cross back and then cross the limit again. To check the state at startup too, add a Home Assistant start trigger and a numeric-state condition. If you use a for duration, Home Assistant resets that timer after a restart or automation reload.

Example YAML pattern
This illustrative pattern sends a notification after the temperature remains below 2 for five minutes. Replace the sample entity and notification action with ones that exist in your installation:

Weather automation ideas
- Skip irrigation when the station reports a rain rate above a threshold you choose.
- Send a low-temperature alert when the outdoor reading crosses a locally appropriate value.
- Notify you about strong gusts or high UV readings, with limits suited to the sensor placement, local conditions, and the consequence of the alert.
These are examples of how to use threshold triggers, not universal weather-safety limits. Choose thresholds with the station’s placement and accuracy in mind, and consider whether the automation should merely notify you or operate equipment.
