For a laptop, connect its HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV, then switch the TV to that input. If you want to connect wirelessly, cast a Chrome tab to a compatible Google Cast TV or receiver, or use a mirroring option supported by your phone and TV. Before kickoff, check whether your sports service allows that connection for the specific live game: device compatibility alone does not guarantee that casting or mirroring is permitted.
Choose a connection that works with your device and the game
Start with three checks: what ports or wireless features your devices support, whether the sports service allows the connection for the event, and whether your Wi-Fi is reliable enough if you stream wirelessly.

Connect a laptop to the TV with HDMI
- Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the laptop and the other to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Use the TV remote or controls to select the input matching the HDMI port you used.
- Open the sports stream on the laptop and confirm that both the picture and sound play on the TV.
If the laptop has no full-size HDMI port, check its specifications before buying a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. USB-C ports do not all support video output, so the adapter alone cannot add that capability. HP describes HDMI as a direct way to connect a laptop and TV. [HP laptop-to-TV guidance]

Cast a laptop’s Chrome tab to a Google Cast TV
- Connect the computer and the compatible Google Cast TV or receiver to the same Wi-Fi network; Google recommends a strong connection.
- In Chrome, open the tab with the stream, then use Chrome’s Cast option to choose the TV or receiver.
- Check that the stream’s picture and audio are playing on the TV before relying on the setup for the game.
Google Chrome Help says, “You can cast most web content.” That describes browser casting broadly; it does not guarantee that a particular sports provider permits casting a live game. Google also distinguishes tab casting from casting the whole computer screen: tab casting sends the tab’s sound to the TV, while full-screen casting may leave sound on the computer. Google’s 4K requirements are specific to its streaming devices
Google Streaming Help states that its streaming devices require a display with HDCP 1.3 or higher, and HDCP 2.2 for 4K. For 4K, Google also lists a 4K-capable display and an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps; actual performance depends on the app, device, network and other factors. These are Google streaming-device requirements, not universal minimums for every sports service or stream. [Google Streaming Help]
Watch a phone stream on the TV
First check the phone and TV manuals or support pages for a connection they both support. Available routes can include Google Cast, AirPlay or HDMI, but the exact steps and compatibility depend on the phone and TV models. Then check the sports service’s policy for the exact game. For example, NFL Support says NFL+ permits casting for certain content, but live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games are available only on a phone or tablet and cannot be cast to a TV or another device. That rule applies to the specified NFL+ content; it should not be assumed to describe other services. [NFL Support]

Compatibility also depends on location and device. As one regional example, beIN SPORTS CONNECT Australia lists HDMI output, AirPlay, Chromecast and certain TV and streaming-device platforms, subject to device and operating-system qualifications. Why won’t the sports stream cast?
- The service blocks casting for this content. Check the app’s help page for the specific event and your region. Some services allow casting for certain programs but not particular live games.
- The TV or receiver is not a compatible destination. For Chrome casting, confirm that the TV or receiver supports Google Cast and that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. [Google Chrome Help]
- The Wi-Fi connection is weak or inconsistent. Google calls for a strong same-network connection for Chrome casting. If wireless playback is unreliable and service rules permit it, try HDMI instead. [Google Chrome Help]
- There is no sound on the TV. If you cast the whole computer screen, audio may remain on the computer; try casting the Chrome tab instead. [Google Chrome Help]
- A USB-C adapter does not produce a picture. Confirm that the laptop’s USB-C port supports video output before relying on a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. [HP]
- The mirror or cast option is missing. Check the phone and TV model instructions for supported connection methods; features vary across devices. [Sony; Samsung]
Check the event rules before buying equipment
An HDMI cable is useful when both the laptop and TV have HDMI ports. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is a conditional option when the laptop lacks HDMI and its USB-C port supports video. A Google Cast receiver is relevant only if the TV lacks built-in Google Cast and the sports service supports that route. None of these accessories bypasses restrictions imposed by the service.
Device support and live-event rights can change. Confirm compatibility with the current service guidance for your location, app version and exact game before kickoff.
