Match the headset’s connection type—3.5 mm cable, USB, Bluetooth, or dedicated wireless receiver—to a port and connection method the specific console, controller, or computer supports. Then set the headset as the audio output and microphone input; getting sound does not guarantee that chat or every headset feature will work.
Identify the connection your headset uses
Check the headset model and its manufacturer’s instructions before plugging it in or pairing it. Headsets that look similar may connect differently: one may use a 3.5 mm cable, another USB audio, and a wireless model may require its own receiver.
- 3.5 mm wired: Connects to a compatible headset jack, such as the one on an Xbox Series X|S controller.
- USB: Works only where the device supports that headset’s USB audio connection. A USB port that charges a headset does not prove it supports USB audio.
- Bluetooth: Availability depends on the platform and headset. Do not assume a console supports ordinary Bluetooth headphones for game audio.
- Dedicated wireless receiver: Some headsets require a specific USB adapter and platform mode rather than a generic Bluetooth pairing.
Connect a headset to Xbox
Use a wired headset with an Xbox Series X|S controller
Xbox says a wired headset with a 3.5 mm jack can connect to an Xbox Series X|S controller. Insert the plug fully into the controller’s headset jack, then check the console’s audio and chat controls if sound or microphone input is missing. The headset and controller must have compatible connectors. Xbox lists 3.5 mm wired headset support and wireless connection options.
Check the exact wireless connection
Xbox wireless headsets may connect through Xbox Wireless, a supported USB-C cable, or a separately sold Windows wireless adapter, depending on the headset model. These are model-specific options, not a promise that any USB or Bluetooth headset will work with an Xbox. Check the headset maker’s compatibility and setup instructions for the exact model.

Connect a headset to PlayStation
Use a wired headset with a DualSense controller
A wired headset may connect to the DualSense controller’s headset jack. For headset-jack use with a PC or Mac, PlayStation says the DualSense controller must be connected by cable; compatibility and available features can vary by device and operating system. See PlayStation’s PC gaming compatibility guidance.
Use a PlayStation Link wireless headset
PlayStation documents the PULSE Elite wireless headset connecting to a PS5 and compatible Windows PCs or Macs with the PlayStation Link USB adapter. Follow the instructions for the headset and adapter; having a USB port alone does not establish compatibility. PlayStation’s accessories support page provides setup guidance.

Troubleshoot sound, microphone, or chat problems
- Confirm the connection type and model. Determine whether the headset is 3.5 mm wired, USB, Bluetooth, or wireless with a dedicated receiver.
- Verify platform support. Check that the console, controller, or computer supports that connection. A port that supplies power may not carry headset audio.
- Reseat wired connections. Push the plug fully into the jack. Check whether the headset’s connector arrangement requires a splitter or adapter.
- Select audio devices. Choose the headset for output and microphone input in the platform’s settings, then check the game or chat app’s own selections.
- Check controls and feature limits. Test headset mute and volume controls, then platform settings. If only chat, chat mix, surround, or another feature fails, consult the manufacturer’s platform-specific support page; connection mode can affect available features.
- Verify wireless pairing. Confirm the receiver is set to the correct platform mode and paired with that headset. Follow the manufacturer’s exact pairing procedure.
What to check before choosing a connection
Compatibility is more than whether a headset can physically plug in. Compare the exact platform and console generation, whether you want wired or wireless use, whether the required USB receiver is included or sold separately, microphone and chat support, access to controls such as chat mix, and which advertised features remain available on your intended device. For example, SteelSeries documents connection-dependent differences for the Arctis Pro across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
A 3.5 mm wired gaming headset is a straightforward option when the controller or computer has a compatible jack. For wireless use, choose a headset and receiver explicitly supported by the target platform. In either case, a matching connector alone does not confirm microphone support or full functionality.
