Connect the DVD player’s HDMI output to an available HDMI input on your VIZIO TV, turn on both devices, then press Input on the TV remote and select the HDMI port you used. The TV’s internet connection is not needed for this wired setup.
What you need before connecting
- A DVD player and a VIZIO TV with a matching video connection.
- A cable that matches the ports on both devices. HDMI is the simplest option when both have HDMI ports.
- The VIZIO remote, or the TV’s Input control, to select the connected source.
Port availability depends on the TV model. For example, VIZIO lists three side HDMI 2.1 inputs on the V-Series V755M-K03 and two side HDMI 1.4 inputs on the D-Series D43fM-K04. These examples do not describe every VIZIO TV. Check the labels on your set and its model-specific manual before buying a cable or converter. How to connect a DVD player with HDMI
- Turn off the TV and DVD player.
- Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the DVD player’s HDMI output and the other into an available HDMI input on the TV.
- Turn on the TV and DVD player.
- Press Input on the VIZIO remote and choose the HDMI input that matches the port you used. The input name or menu wording can vary by model.
- Insert a disc and start playback using the DVD player’s controls or remote.
VIZIO’s manual for the VO370M and VO420E says HDMI is the preferred connection when a DVD player has a digital interface. That manual applies to those legacy models; it is not evidence that every VIZIO TV has the same inputs. VIZIO VO370M/VO420E user manual
What if the DVD player does not have HDMI?
DVI output
The legacy VIZIO manual documents connecting a player’s DVI output to the TV’s HDMI input with an HDMI-to-DVI cable. DVI carries video in this setup, so connect the player’s red and white audio outputs to the corresponding audio inputs on the TV as well. Confirm that your specific TV supports the required audio-input arrangement before using this option.

Component, S-Video, or composite AV
The same legacy manual describes component video with separate red and white audio, S-Video with separate audio, and composite AV with a yellow video plug plus red and white audio plugs. Use one of these only if the exact TV has matching inputs. A manual for a 2009-era model does not establish that newer VIZIO TVs include analog ports.
If the player and TV have no matching connection, check both model numbers and their manuals before choosing a converter. A converter’s required inputs and outputs must fit the equipment on both ends.

Which input should you select?
Select the TV input corresponding to the physical port where the cable is connected. For example, if the cable runs to HDMI 2, choose HDMI 2 in the TV’s Input menu. If the menu labels differ, use the TV’s Input control and match the selected source to the port used. VIZIO’s support page provides access to user manuals for model-specific checks: VIZIO Support.

Fix common connection problems
- No picture: Make sure both devices are on, the cable connects the player’s output to the TV’s input, and the TV is set to that input.
- Picture but no sound with DVI: Connect the separate red and white audio cables as well as the DVI-to-HDMI video connection, and confirm the TV has compatible audio inputs.
- The player has red, white, and yellow plugs: Check that the TV has matching composite AV inputs. Do not assume it does based on instructions for an older VIZIO model.
- The selected source shows nothing: Check that you chose the input matching the actual TV port, then verify that the cable is firmly connected at both ends.
Choosing between matching connections
If both devices offer more than one compatible connection, HDMI is the straightforward digital choice. For older equipment, use the connection confirmed by the TV’s model-specific manual and account for any separate audio cables. VIZIO’s legacy manual labels HDMI “Best,” component and S-Video “Better,” and composite “Good” for the TV generation it covers; those labels should not be treated as a universal ranking for current models.
