Connect the TV’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s designated eARC/HDMI port with an HDMI cable. Then select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output and enable eARC and audio passthrough or Dolby Atmos options if your devices offer them. Both devices, the playback source, the content, and the relevant settings must support the Atmos signal path.

Connect the TV and soundbar with HDMI eARC

  1. Check the ports and specifications. Find the TV’s HDMI port labelled ARC or eARC and the soundbar port designated for ARC/eARC, often labelled eARC/HDMI. Check both manuals to confirm that the equipment supports the connection and Atmos passthrough.
  2. Connect the cable. Run an HDMI cable from the TV’s ARC/eARC port directly to the soundbar’s designated HDMI port. Dolby says HDMI 2.0 is sufficient for ARC and describes HDMI 2.1 as necessary for its eARC setup; check your devices’ manuals for their cable requirements. If you already have a cable, check that it is suitable before buying another.
  3. Change the TV’s sound settings. Set the audio output to the external audio system or soundbar. If available, enable HDMI eARC and set digital audio output to passthrough or the relevant Atmos option. Menu labels and locations vary by model, so use the TV and soundbar manuals for exact instructions.
  4. Test with Atmos content. Play a title explicitly labelled Dolby Atmos through a compatible TV app or connected player. Check the soundbar or TV’s available format status to see whether Atmos is active; how that status is displayed depends on the model. A streaming service may require a compatible subscription tier.

Dolby recommends using eARC whenever possible because it supports a broader range of audio formats. See Dolby’s soundbar connection guide for the basic hookup and its passthrough alternative.

ARC and eARC: what the difference means for Atmos

Both ARC and eARC send audio from the TV to a connected sound system over HDMI. eARC provides broader format support. An eARC TV connected to an ARC-only soundbar can still produce audio, but some formats may have reduced playback support. Whether a particular Atmos source works depends on the TV, soundbar, source format, and passthrough behavior; ARC does not categorically rule out every Atmos path. Dolby explains the distinction in its ARC and eARC guide.

Why the audio format matters

Dolby says Atmos object-based audio can be delivered using Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, or Dolby MAT. The format used by a source affects what the TV and soundbar need to pass through. Dolby’s technical support material specifies that a TV receiving Dolby MAT must transcode it or pass it through over eARC; ARC does not provide enough bandwidth for that case. This limitation applies to that Dolby MAT path, not automatically to every Atmos stream. See Dolby’s soundbar application guidelines.

  • Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

If the TV does not have ARC or eARC

A soundbar with an HDMI input and a separate HDMI output may offer another route. Connect the Atmos-capable external source—such as a streaming box or disc player—to the soundbar’s HDMI input, then connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV. This sends the source’s audio to the bar and video onward to the TV.

Before using this setup, verify that the soundbar supports the source’s audio format and can pass through the video features required by the TV and source. Check both product manuals for compatibility; an HDMI passthrough port does not guarantee support for every audio or video format.

Why Dolby Atmos may not play

If you hear sound but Atmos is not active, check the complete signal path rather than assuming the cable or soundbar is the only cause:

  • Wrong HDMI ports: Confirm the cable runs from the TV’s labelled ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s designated ARC/eARC port.
  • TV output settings: Select the soundbar or external audio system, and check eARC and digital-audio passthrough settings where available. Follow the model-specific manual for menu names.
  • Content or source does not provide Atmos: Confirm the specific title, app or player supports Atmos and, for streaming, that your subscription tier includes it.
  • A device in the chain cannot pass the format: Check that the TV, soundbar, and playback device support the audio format and passthrough mode being used. ARC/eARC combinations can affect format support.
  • No clear format indication: Test with known Atmos content and look for the TV or soundbar’s available audio-format status. The indicator is model-specific, and its absence alone may not explain the problem.

Dolby’s Atmos setup guide and home theater setup guide cover compatible devices, content, and playback sources. For a manufacturer-specific example—not a universal menu path—see Dolby’s Sony BRAVIA setup instructions.

Position the soundbar for listening

Once playback is working, Dolby recommends placing the soundbar below the TV, approximately at ear level, facing the listening position, and keeping the path between the bar and listeners unobstructed. Follow the soundbar manufacturer’s placement guidance if it differs for your model.
