Set the output resolution and frame rate first, then choose the matching H.264 video bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendations. In FFmpeg, pass that target to -b:v in bits per second. Choose an x264 preset based on whether your actual VPS can encode the workload in real time: begin with a faster preset if it falls behind, and try slower presets only when the VPS has spare CPU capacity.
No single preset or VPS size is right for every stream. Validate the settings on the instance and content you plan to use.
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and YouTube bitrate
YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate depends on the incoming resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of the bandwidth your VPS or network needs. YouTube does not state a publication year for these figures in the cited page, so check its live encoder guidance before deployment.

Understand FFmpeg’s bitrate and preset options
Bitrate: use bits per second with -b:v
FFmpeg’s -b:v option takes a video bitrate in bits per second. For example, -b:v 10000000 specifies a 10 Mbps target, matching YouTube’s recommended H.264 target for 1080p30. Do not confuse this with x264’s own bitrate parameter, which uses kilobits per second. See the FFmpeg documentation for option details.
Preset: trade encoding speed against compression efficiency
The -preset option controls the speed-versus-compression-efficiency trade-off. Faster presets require less encoding work but are generally less compression-efficient; slower presets need more processing time. A slower preset is not automatically better for a live stream if the VPS cannot keep up.

There is no official universal preset-to-VPS-size mapping. CPU allocation, sustained performance, video complexity, output format, and frame rate all affect the result. FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder documentation describes encoder options, but it does not establish a preset that will work on every instance.

Build an FFmpeg command for YouTube Live
This command is a template for an existing video file, not a tested universal configuration. It shows a 1080p30 H.264 video target as an example; change the bitrate to match your actual output format and YouTube’s current table.

input.mp4with the input file path. The-reoption reads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. - Set
-presetto an x264 preset that your VPS can sustain;veryfasthere is only an illustrative starting point. - Set
-b:vto the recommended bitrate for the intended resolution and frame rate. The example value,10000000, is 10 Mbps. - Replace the placeholder RTMPS address and stream key with the ingest URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a secret: do not publish it or include it in a public script or screenshot.
- Run a representative stream long enough to reveal sustained performance issues before relying on it. Watch FFmpeg’s reported processing speed and whether frames are dropped; if it cannot keep pace, try a faster preset and validate again.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. Resolution and frame rate can be detected automatically; if you need manual settings, YouTube supports them with a custom stream key. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation for stream configuration details.
Validate the VPS instead of guessing its size
A bitrate recommendation does not tell you whether a VPS can encode a particular video in real time. Test on the actual instance with representative content and the intended output settings. Do not assume that a provider’s advertised core count guarantees sustained x264 performance.

- If FFmpeg consistently processes slower than the input’s playback rate, encoding is falling behind; test a faster preset or reduce the output workload.
- If the VPS keeps pace but has no CPU headroom, the stream may be vulnerable to load variation. A nominally successful short run is not proof that a long session will remain stable.
- If processing stays in real time with capacity to spare, you can test a slower preset and compare behavior under the same workload.
These checks are operational guidance, not benchmark results. The suitable instance and preset depend on your content and the VPS’s sustained capacity.

Common configuration problems
- The stream is rejected or does not connect: verify that the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key are the current ones from YouTube, and that the key is copied correctly.
- FFmpeg falls behind: the preset or output workload may exceed the VPS’s real-time capacity. Try a faster preset, then test again with representative content.
- The stream looks poor despite using the recommended target: confirm that you selected the bitrate for the actual incoming resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s recommendation is a target, not a quality guarantee for every source.
- The video format does not match the intended output: confirm the resolution and frame rate being sent to YouTube. YouTube can detect these automatically, or you can set them manually with a custom stream key.
