vMix attempts to reconnect to YouTube automatically after an internet or streaming-provider disconnection; the documented guidance does not identify a separate reconnect switch to enable. Watch the vMix Stream button: orange indicates a connection attempt or disconnection, while red indicates that a streaming connection has been established. This restores the encoder connection when the network returns; it cannot repair your internet service or guarantee that YouTube will keep the same live event open.
Before going live: choose and configure a YouTube workflow
Set up the YouTube destination and event before starting vMix. The two documented workflows differ mainly in where you create and control the event—not in any established advantage for outage recovery. Screen labels may change: vMix’s destination overview was updated April 9, 2025, while its Live Stream Now guide was updated March 16, 2021.
| Workflow | How it is configured | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live Destination | Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio, then enter its stream details in vMix. | YouTube Studio provides event settings and scheduling. vMix’s YouTube destination overview and YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance describe the workflow. |
| YouTube Live Stream Now | Choose the destination in vMix, sign in, then create a stream or select a scheduled event. | vMix says you can stream automatically to the same stream on repeat occasions. Finishing the stream in vMix automatically ends it on YouTube. See the vMix Live Stream Now guide. |
Keep the correct stream credentials available
For a YouTube Studio event, configure vMix with that event’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: use the key associated with the intended event and do not share it publicly. The YouTube Help guide to managing live stream settings covers stream keys and event controls.
What to do when the internet drops
- Check the vMix Stream button. After a loss of internet or service from the streaming provider, vMix’s button turns orange and vMix automatically attempts to reconnect. The vMix support article says the button returns to red when the connection succeeds. It does not specify a retry interval, retry limit, or maximum outage duration. The article was last updated August 20, 2020, so check your current vMix interface if its labels differ. See vMix’s explanation of the orange or amber Stream button.
- Allow the network to recover. If the outage is ongoing, vMix cannot restore your ISP connection. Once connectivity returns, give its reconnect attempt time; no documented timing or guarantee establishes how quickly it will reconnect.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Read the event’s stream health and status messages as well as vMix’s button. YouTube-side status can help distinguish an encoder connection problem from a problem with the event or incoming feed. Use YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.
- Keep the existing event intact if you want to resume it. Avoid pressing Stop in vMix or ending the YouTube event merely to prompt a reconnect. In the Live Stream Now workflow, finishing in vMix automatically ends the stream in YouTube. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings also affect encoder control of an event.
Diagnose repeated orange-and-red cycling
If vMix repeatedly loses and regains the connection, look for a connection or workload issue rather than a hidden reconnect setting. The vMix support article identifies these possible causes:

- 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐔𝐒𝐁 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 - UE306 is a USB 3.0 Type-A to RJ45 Ethernet adapter that adds a reliable wired network port to your laptop, tablet, or Ultrabook. It delivers fast and stable 10/100/1000 Mbps wired connections to your computer or tablet via a router or network switch, making it ideal for file transfers, HD video streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing.

- 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐍𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐨 𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡- Easily connect your Nintendo Switch to a wired network for faster downloads and a more stable online gaming experience compared to Wi-Fi.
- 𝐏𝐥𝐮𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲- No driver required for Nintendo Switch, Windows 11/10/8.1/8, and Linux. Simply connect and enjoy instant wired internet access without complicated setup.
- 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲- Supports Nintendo Switch, PCs, laptops, Ultrabooks, tablets, and other USB-powered web devices; works with network equipment including modems, routers, and switches.
- Insufficient upload capacity: vMix gives a rule of thumb that the streaming bitrate should be less than 80% of available upload speed for best results. This is guidance, not a guarantee; the usable upload rate can vary.
- High CPU load: A heavily loaded computer may struggle to sustain the stream. Check the system workload and reduce avoidable load if the connection remains unstable.
- Provider path or quality mismatch: The route to the streaming provider may not be able to receive the selected quality. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and whether the chosen streaming quality is sustainable on your connection.
YouTube’s live-stream settings and stream-health guidance and encoder troubleshooting steps are useful alongside vMix’s status indicator.
What automatic reconnect does—and does not—mean
Automatic reconnect is vMix’s response to a broken encoder connection. It is not internet failover, and it does not guarantee that YouTube will keep the same event open or that every viewer will see an uninterrupted stream. The available vMix and YouTube guidance gives no outage-duration threshold or assurance of event continuity for every failure. For event behavior, check the current event settings in YouTube Live Control Room; auto-start and auto-stop determine whether encoder actions can start or stop the event.
