Configure the timeout that matches the work that is slow: Playwright Test uses a 30-second default for each test and a separate 5-second default for retrying assertions, while action and navigation operations have no timeout by default. A whole test run also has no global cap unless you set one. Use suite-wide configuration for consistent limits and narrower overrides for a genuinely slow test, assertion, or operation.
Choose the timeout for the scope that is timing out
Playwright Test has several independent timeout scopes. Raising one does not automatically raise the others. The defaults and configuration names below are documented by Playwright; documentation was accessed October 3, 2026.

Teardown and afterEach receive a separate budget equal to the test timeout. beforeAll and afterAll also have a separate timeout, which defaults to the test timeout. A fixture can have its own budget so slow setup does not require giving every test body a larger limit. See Playwright’s timeouts guide and TestConfig API.
Set suite-wide defaults in playwright.config.ts
Use defineConfig to set defaults for the test suite. This example gives tests two minutes, retrying assertions ten seconds, actions ten seconds, navigation thirty seconds, and the full run one hour. These are illustrative budgets, not universal recommendations; choose values based on expected work and the environment.

});Remove any setting you do not need. In particular, globalTimeout is optional: it caps the complete run and is useful on CI when a broken setup should not run indefinitely. The TestConfig API documents the run-level option.
Change the timeout for one test or hook
Set a one-off test budget
Call test.setTimeout(ms) inside a test when only that test needs more time:

});test.slow() is a shorthand that triples the default test timeout. Use it only when the test is expected to be slow; it does not raise the assertion, action, or navigation timeout.

Extend a timeout in a hook
In beforeEach, use testInfo.setTimeout to extend the current test’s budget relative to its existing value:

Set assertion, action, and navigation timeouts
Retrying assertions
Auto-retrying assertions have their own budget, independent of the enclosing test. Set a suite default through expect.timeout, or choose a limit for one matcher:

});Use the assertion timeout for a condition that may take time to become true, rather than extending the whole test when only that condition needs more time. Playwright documents retrying assertions in its Assertions guide.

Set a default action budget with use.actionTimeout, or pass a timeout to an individual operation:

A timeout means the operation did not meet its condition within that scope’s budget; it does not by itself identify the cause. Playwright cautions that flaky tests often need a different fix than longer limits. Check the failing operation and expected condition first.
- An assertion times out: confirm the locator and expected state are correct, then determine whether the state is legitimately slower in this environment. If only that condition is slow, adjust its matcher timeout.
- A click or other action times out: inspect whether the intended target is available for the action and whether the selected locator identifies the correct element. Adjust the action budget only if the action is expected to take longer.
- Navigation times out: distinguish the navigation milestone from the application state the test actually needs. Wait for the relevant page condition with a web assertion where possible.
- The entire run goes on too long: set
globalTimeoutif the run needs a hard cap, especially in CI; this limits the run as a whole rather than changing an individual test’s budget. - Fixture setup is slow: consider a dedicated fixture timeout instead of increasing the timeout for all test bodies.
Do not use networkidle as a generic readiness signal for tests: the Page API marks it as discouraged for testing and recommends using web assertions to assess readiness. See the Page API.
