To restart a YouTube music-stream encoder after it fails—and start it again when Linux boots—run it as a foreground systemd service with Restart=on-failure, a short RestartSec delay, and boot-time enablement. This supervises the local process, not YouTube’s receipt or health of the stream; check both.
1. Create a systemd service for the encoder
Use a system service so it can run independently of an interactive login. The encoder must remain in the foreground so systemd can track the process it starts as the service’s main process. The following is an adaptable unit pattern, not a ready-made encoder command:

WantedBy=multi-user.targetCreate the file with administrative permissions, for example with sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/youtube-music-stream.service. Replace the executable and arguments with the actual encoder command, and set User and WorkingDirectory to values that exist on your host. The example’s stream account and /srv/youtube-stream directory are not created automatically.
Do not copy a guessed FFmpeg command into ExecStart: the correct arguments depend on your audio source, installed encoder build, YouTube stream key, and chosen encoder settings. Keep stream credentials out of a unit file readable by other users. Use a permissions-controlled configuration mechanism appropriate to your Linux distribution and encoder; the exact credential syntax depends on that setup.

2. Enable and start the service
After saving the unit, load it into systemd, enable it for boot, and start it now:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-music-stream.servicedaemon-reload is also needed after editing the unit so systemd reads the updated configuration. enable --now both enables boot-time startup and starts the service immediately. Check its current state with:

systemctl status youtube-music-stream.serviceTo follow the service’s logs while it runs or restarts, use:
journalctl -u youtube-music-stream.service -f3. Choose the restart behavior deliberately
For an encoder expected to run continuously, Restart=on-failure is a sensible starting point. It asks systemd to restart after an unclean exit, abnormal signal, operation timeout, or watchdog timeout. The alternative Restart=always also restarts after a clean exit, so use it only if every exit—including a nominal one—should launch the process again. Neither policy overrides an explicit systemctl stop. systemd’s service manual documents the restart behavior.

RestartSec=5s sets the delay before an automatic restart in this example. Repeated attempts are subject to start-rate limits, which prevent rapid, unbounded restart loops. The appropriate retry delay and limits depend on the expected failure and how quickly your encoder can recover; consult the manual installed on the host, especially if it runs an older systemd version. The systemd unit manual describes start-rate limiting.
Recover after repeated failures
If systemd stops attempting restarts because the service hit its start-rate limit, inspect the logs and correct the underlying problem first. Then clear the failed state and start it again:

sudo systemctl start youtube-music-stream.service4. Verify the YouTube stream separately
A service shown as active only tells you that systemd considers its process active. The encoder might still be stuck on its input, unable to use the network, or sending a feed YouTube rejects or loses. Check systemctl status and the journal for local process problems, and inspect YouTube’s live control and stream-health feedback for ingestion problems.

Before going live, test the stream; while it is running, monitor stream health and review messages. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance also recommends testing beforehand and monitoring health during the event.

5. Set encoder options for your actual stream
Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the capabilities of your actual encoder and upload connection. There is no single bitrate or resolution that is correct for every music stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion as a secure extension of RTMP; confirm that your encoder supports the appropriate ingest option and configure it for your stream.
The systemd unit manages the local process; it does not select or validate the encoder’s YouTube settings. Adjust those in the encoder command or its configuration, then test the feed in YouTube’s live tools.
