In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and turn on Automatically Reconnect. This makes OBS retry its connection when the network returns, but it does not guarantee YouTube will keep the same live event open or restore the same viewer session. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room after reconnection; if the event has ended, you may need to start or create a stream again.
Configure OBS to retry its connection
- Open OBS Settings → Advanced. Enable Automatically Reconnect. OBS community guidance identifies this control in Advanced settings and suggests increasing the retry allowance if outages may last longer. Field names, defaults, and behavior can vary by OBS version, so check the options shown in your installed version rather than relying on a universal retry count or duration.
- Confirm the YouTube connection details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, make sure the encoder is configured with the intended stream URL and stream key. YouTube uses the key to accept the encoder feed; treat it as a private credential and do not share it.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. YouTube lets you configure whether an encoder can start or stop streaming. These settings do not guarantee that a dropped encoder will resume an event that YouTube has already ended.
- Test the full viewer experience. Disconnect the network, restore it, and check both OBS’s connection status and what appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room and watch page. If YouTube reports that the event ended, restart the event or encoder using the appropriate stream setup rather than assuming the old viewer session has recovered.
OBS reconnect is an encoder-side retry. The computer, OBS, and network must be available again for it to work, and YouTube’s event status is a separate part of recovery. YouTube does not publish a universal timeout or guarantee that every interrupted event will remain open.
Reduce avoidable drops before relying on reconnect
OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Reconnect can address the retry after a drop, but preventing the underlying connection problem is a separate task.
- Check bitrate against upload capacity. YouTube recommends that total stream bitrate fit the available upload bandwidth and suggests leaving 20% headroom. This is a planning recommendation, not a guarantee against interruption.
- Prefer Ethernet over Wi‑Fi where practical. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi‑Fi can be unstable. An Ethernet cable for a wired OBS setup may reduce local wireless instability, but it cannot restore an ISP connection that is down.
- Investigate local causes. OBS recommends checking bitrate and network conditions, software interference, and whether network drivers are current. Lowering bitrate may help if the connection is congested, but OBS cautions that dynamic bitrate does not fix the underlying connection and may reduce video quality.
These measures can reduce avoidable drops; none can make a shared internet connection available during an ISP outage.

When a backup encoder helps—and when it does not
YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verifying that the player rolls over to the backup. A backup can cover some encoder failures only when the backup has a working feed path. If both encoders rely on the same failed internet connection or power source, it may not solve that failure.
For outage resilience, plan and test the network path as well as the encoder. A backup connection is useful only if it is independent enough to remain available during the failure you are trying to cover.
