To save recent moments from a 24/7 Indian music YouTube stream, enable OBS Replay Buffer under Settings > Output, choose a buffer duration your computer can handle, and assign a save hotkey under Settings > Hotkeys. Replay Buffer saves recent video locally; it does not keep the stream live or provide a dependable archive of the entire broadcast. Test it while streaming, plan storage separately, and confirm you have the rights to use every track in the live stream and any saved recording.
What OBS Replay Buffer does—and does not do
Replay Buffer continuously holds a recent portion of your output so you can save that segment when something worth keeping happens. You configure it in OBS and trigger the save with a hotkey. The resulting clip is stored locally on the computer running OBS.
It is not the same as starting a continuous recording, and it is not a way to keep a YouTube broadcast live. If you need a full copy of a long program, plan and verify a separate local recording or capture arrangement. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; a 24/7 stream should not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a complete recording (YouTube Help: archive live streams).
Configure Replay Buffer in OBS
- Open the output settings. In OBS, select Settings > Output. Enable Replay Buffer. OBS documents this control in its OBS Studio overview.
- Choose a duration. Set how much recent output you want available to save. There is no universal OBS-recommended duration: choose a short or longer window according to the clips you want, available system resources, and your own tests on the installed OBS version and computer.
- Choose the recording location. In OBS recording settings, set a local path with enough free space for the clips and any separate continuous recordings you plan to retain. Replay clips and full-length recordings have different storage needs. OBS explains recording paths and recording options in its standard recording guide.
- Assign a save hotkey. Open Settings > Hotkeys and bind Save Replay Buffer to a key combination that is unlikely to conflict with other controls or applications. OBS also documents hotkeys for starting and stopping the buffer.
- Start and test the buffer. Start the Replay Buffer in OBS, then trigger the save hotkey during a private or unlisted test stream. Check that OBS creates a file in the expected location and that it contains the intended recent segment.
- Test the live workload. Run the stream and Replay Buffer together on the computer you intend to use. Watch encoder load, dropped frames, audio routing, and file creation. OBS notes that recording quality options other than “Same as stream,” or using a separate encoder, can consume additional system resources (OBS recording guide).
Choose settings by testing, not by copying a preset
A suitable buffer duration, resolution, bitrate, and encoder depend on your computer, upload capacity, desired clip quality, and how much recent content you want to retain. The available OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish one ideal set of values for every 24/7 music stream. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring stream health; its guidance explains encoder setup and preview checks (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube live streaming tips).

- Begin with a configuration that your computer and connection can sustain, then test streaming and saving replays at the same time.
- Observe whether the encoder stays stable and whether the broadcast has dropped frames or audio problems during the test.
- Check that saved clips play correctly and that their audio and video cover the segment you expected.
- Estimate storage from the actual file sizes your settings produce and the number of clips or recordings you intend to keep. The source guidance does not specify a universal capacity.
An external SSD is optional, not an OBS requirement. It may be useful if local clips or recordings exceed the space available on the computer, but choose capacity based on your own output settings and retention needs.
Plan a full archive separately
Replay Buffer is for saving recent moments, not preserving every hour of a continuous broadcast. If you need the whole program, configure a separate local recording or other verified capture method and confirm it is producing usable files before relying on it. For ordinary OBS recordings, OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file; this is guidance for standard recordings, not a guarantee that every Replay Buffer setup behaves identically.

For a 24/7 broadcast, also consider how recordings will be divided, checked, and moved off the streaming computer. Verify that files are being created and open as expected; do not assume YouTube will retain the full stream when it runs beyond 12 hours.

Check music rights before going live
Music rights apply to the broadcast and to recordings you keep or publish. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators must have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants (YouTube Livestream terms and conditions). YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if a match remains. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted by the relevant rights owner (YouTube copyright and live streams).

For an Indian music channel, the sources establish YouTube’s platform rules, not which licenses a particular catalog, territory, archive, or use requires under Indian law. Confirm live-use and recording rights with the music owners or qualified counsel. If a rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether your channel must be allowlisted.
YouTube identifies music and sound effects in its Audio Library as copyright-safe for YouTube. Check each track’s terms and intended live use; when a Creative Commons track requires attribution, include the specified credit in the video description (YouTube Audio Library).

Troubleshoot common Replay Buffer problems
The save hotkey does nothing
- Confirm Replay Buffer is enabled in Settings > Output and has been started.
- Check Settings > Hotkeys to make sure Save Replay Buffer has a binding and that another application or OBS action is not using the same combination.
- Test the binding during a private or unlisted stream and check the configured recording folder for a new file.
No clip appears in the expected folder
- Recheck the recording path in OBS and verify that the destination drive is connected and has free space.
- Save a test replay, then inspect the destination folder and confirm the file can be opened.
- If you changed storage locations, verify the new path rather than assuming OBS is writing to the old one.
The stream becomes unstable when saving or recording
- Test Replay Buffer and any continuous recording together; they add work to the streaming computer.
- Review encoder load and dropped frames. Consider reducing the workload or recording quality, then test again.
- OBS notes that quality options other than “Same as stream” and separate encoders can use additional resources. YouTube also advises testing with the actual connection and monitoring stream health.
The stream is interrupted despite having a music license
Check whether the matched track is covered for live streaming and whether the rights owner must allowlist your channel in Content ID. YouTube says licensed third-party content can still be interrupted when the channel is not allowlisted; contact the rights owner and resolve the claim before resuming the same use.
