Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test a modest 720p, 30 FPS stream using a stable hardware encoder if your PC has one. If the computer struggles, the connection cannot sustain the bitrate, or you need the stream to continue while the PC is off, use the lower-load settings and recovery steps below—or run uploaded videos from the cloud instead.
Start with a realistic baseline
No OBS preset can guarantee that a low-end PC will stay live around the clock. The workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity, and basic system requirements do not guarantee that a particular setup can stream reliably. OBS recommends testing the actual scene and content you plan to broadcast. See the OBS system requirements.
- Open OBS and choose Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Follow the prompts to generate a baseline for streaming.
- Use the settings below as a conservative first trial, not a promise of performance. Test with your real audio, video and scenes before leaving the stream unattended.
- If the wizard’s result overloads the PC or the connection, lower output resolution or bitrate and retest.
Set up OBS for a low-end PC
Choose an encoder that leaves the PC enough headroom
In OBS, open Settings → Output → Streaming. If the PC has a supported hardware encoder, test it before assuming software x264 will be lighter. Hardware encoding uses a dedicated component on the GPU or other supported hardware, which can reduce CPU work. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV and Apple VideoToolbox among its hardware encoding options. Older generations can produce lower image quality, so compare the result on your actual system. See OBS’s hardware encoding guide.
Recommended Free Tools
If a hardware encoder is unavailable or unstable, try x264 and test the stream load. There is no universally best choice: compare whether the CPU stays responsive, whether the encoder overloads, and whether the picture quality is acceptable. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains how to respond to encoding overload.

Lower resolution and frame rate before upgrading hardware
In Settings → Video, set the frame rate to 30 FPS as a starting point. If the PC struggles, reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution below the source resolution. A 720p30 output is a reasonable first trial; 480p30 is a fallback when system load or available upload capacity makes 720p impractical. OBS notes that reducing output resolution and frame rate can reduce GPU and encoding load.
720p30 preserves more detail but needs more upload capacity than 480p30. The lower resolution may be more workable on a constrained connection, but it will look less detailed. The right option depends on both the PC’s sustained performance and the upload path—not just the speed shown by a brief test.

Use a simple scene and compatible stream settings
For a straightforward YouTube stream, use H.264, CBR (constant bitrate) and a 2-second keyframe interval in the streaming encoder settings. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance lists H.264 and CBR; see YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Keep scenes simple. Limit animated sources, filters and other effects that add rendering work.
- Close applications that heavily use the GPU before starting OBS.
- Use the same scene complexity during testing as you expect during the unattended stream.
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists these bitrate values. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your ISP route can sustain them or that the minimum will provide good picture quality.

| Output | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | More detail, but needs more sustained upload capacity and may be harder on a constrained connection. |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | Less detail and a lower-load fallback when 720p30 is not stable. |
Measure the upload connection at the place and time you intend to stream, and leave capacity for variation. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance suggests using about 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point; YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. These are guidance figures from different sources, not a guarantee of reliability. Choose a bitrate that remains stable over an extended test, and lower it if the connection fluctuates.
For India, test the actual ISP route and local power conditions at the streaming location, ideally during the hours you plan to broadcast. No single national broadband or outage figure can establish whether your specific connection or power supply is reliable enough.

Prefer a wired connection when practical
OBS recommends wired networking for streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. If the PC and router have Ethernet ports and a cable can be routed safely, connect them directly and compare stream health with your Wi-Fi result. A Cat 6 cable is one possible cable choice, not an OBS requirement. Ethernet can remove a weak Wi-Fi link from the chain, but it cannot prevent ISP congestion or power loss. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Set up the stream in YouTube and connect OBS using the stream key or account connection you have configured. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it could broadcast to your channel.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test with audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Watch the broadcast from another device. Check that video and audio are present, the image is acceptable, and YouTube reports healthy stream status.
- Leave the test running long enough to reveal intermittent dropped frames, encoder overload or connection variation. A short speed test alone does not establish long-run stability.
- Confirm that your local archive recording is being written and that there is adequate storage if keeping a backup matters. YouTube’s operational guidance recommends verifying the local archive file is growing.
- Check reconnect behavior before relying on the setup. OBS has an automatic reconnect option in Advanced settings, but it cannot repair a power failure or an internet outage.
Troubleshoot common failures
Dropped frames or unstable connection
Dropped frames point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reduce the bitrate, test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, and check whether a VPN, security software or network optimization tool is interfering. If the problem persists, contact your ISP. These steps follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

Encoding overload, stutter or an unresponsive PC
Reduce the output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, remove demanding filters or animated sources, and close GPU-intensive applications. Test the available hardware encoder as well as x264 if appropriate; the result depends on the particular encoder generation and PC. Use OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide if the issue continues.
The stream stops after a power or ISP interruption
OBS automatic reconnect may help after some dropped connections, but it does not keep the PC running without power or restore an unavailable ISP route. Test how your exact setup behaves after a brief interruption. Backup power or a second internet path may help a particular installation, but the needed capacity and reliability depend on the equipment and location.
The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete
Do not assume one continuous 24-hour broadcast will become one complete YouTube video. YouTube warns that a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. If an archive matters, make and verify a local recording backup, check storage capacity and recording load, or use shorter sessions if a saved YouTube archive is important. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your aim is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo can run the stream without keeping a low-end PC on at home:
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
