For a clear Hindi audiobook stream, set the narration level at its source first, use OBS’s meters and your ears to avoid clipping, then record a representative test before going live. OBS does not prescribe one universal audiobook loudness target: its meter references are guidance, while YouTube specifies the live audio format and bitrate.

What should OBS audio levels be for YouTube?

There is no single peak or average level that suits every narrator, microphone, and recording. OBS identifies -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level. Treat these as meter reference points and headroom guidance—not as a requirement to make every passage average or peak at those values. Keep the signal below clipping; the output must remain below 0 dBFS.

OBS’s main colored meter is peak-oriented: it indicates peaks, not perceived loudness over time. Its moving black VU indicator is an RMS-style estimate integrated over 300 ms, and OBS notes that it is not a modern standards-based loudness meter. Use both as clues, but listen to the narration to judge whether quiet phrases remain intelligible and emphatic words stay clean. The peak hold remains visible for 20 seconds, which can help reveal an unexpectedly loud syllable or noise. See the OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.

Set up the narration source in OBS

1. Identify what should be heard

Determine whether the audiobook reaches OBS from a microphone, an audio interface, or a media playback source. In the OBS Audio Mixer, confirm that the intended source moves when narration is active. Avoid unintentionally mixing desktop audio, alerts, or a second microphone into the narration path. If the meter is inactive, check that the correct device is selected, that playback is running, and that connections are secure.

2. Adjust gain at the source first

Begin at the source device’s gain control or the relevant operating-system or application level, rather than compensating immediately with the OBS fader. OBS’s guidance is: “Always start at the device in question.” Listen at the earliest available headphone or monitor output, then check the signal as it reaches OBS. Make small changes while speaking at the pace and volume you expect to use on stream.

3. Use the OBS fader and filters carefully

Once the input is clean and at a reasonable level, use the mixer fader for final source balance. Add a Gain filter only if you need to correct the level: extra gain reduces available headroom and can push loud words toward clipping. To add a filter, open the source’s Filters menu from the Audio Mixer and choose the needed audio filter. OBS lists Gain among its audio filters in the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

4. Check mono and stereo routing

OBS defaults to stereo. A mono narration source is normally played to both left and right for viewers. If a stereo source has activity on only one side, inspect its routing or consider Downmix to Mono where appropriate. Check that your own headphone or monitor output is not one-sided, too. The OBS Audio Mixer Guide explains monitoring and channel behavior.

Record a test and listen before going live

  1. Read a representative passage. Include soft lines, normal narration, emphatic words, and pauses. Speak as you intend to during the broadcast.
  2. Monitor the signal. In OBS, use Audio Monitoring in Advanced Audio Properties to listen to the source through an available monitor output. Check for distortion, distracting background noise, abrupt level changes, or unwanted sources.
  3. Make a test recording. Listen to it on headphones or speakers at a normal playback level. Confirm that quiet phrases are understandable without loud passages distorting or forcing you to turn playback down.
  4. Check YouTube before the audience arrives. Preview the stream and check stream health. YouTube recommends pre-stream testing with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its guidance is explicit: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

OBS recommends listening through the earliest available output and through OBS monitoring; YouTube likewise recommends testing before the broadcast. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide and YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

What audio bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?

For a narration-focused stream configured as stereo, YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. A simple audiobook stream will normally use stereo settings; Hindi does not require a separate codec profile. YouTube lists different values for 5.1 surround—AAC, 384 Kbps, and 48 kHz—which are relevant only when using a deliberate surround workflow.

OBS’s overview gives “around 160kbps” as generic streaming audio bitrate advice, while YouTube gives a destination-specific 128 Kbps recommendation for stereo. For a YouTube stream, follow YouTube’s published setting. YouTube also recommends RTMPS for secure transport; RTMPS is a connection protocol, not a loudness setting. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

How to stop audiobook audio from clipping

  • Do not chase the red zone. The main meter shows peaks. A peak in red is a warning to investigate, not a target for narration.
  • Lower the source gain first. If the input is already distorted before it reaches OBS, lowering the OBS fader will not repair that distortion.
  • Use filters sparingly. A Gain filter raises level and reduces headroom. Recheck the loudest words after any gain change.
  • Listen for more than peaks. A meter cannot tell you on its own whether soft Hindi phrases are clear, the room is noisy, or the sound is fatiguing. Listen to the test recording and monitor output.
  • Check the whole path. Review the source, OBS mixer balance, channel routing, and YouTube preview; a clean meter at one point does not guarantee that every downstream output is correct.

Troubleshooting common audio problems

Problem Likely cause What to check
The intended mixer meter does not move Wrong or disconnected device, inactive playback, or the wrong source selected Confirm the selected device and source, start narration or playback, and check connections.
Narration distorts on loud words Input gain or added gain is too high, or the source is clipping before OBS Reduce gain at the source first; then review filters and fader position. Record another test and listen.
Quiet phrases are hard to hear, but emphatic lines are already loud The passage has a wide level variation, or the source balance is not suitable Listen to a representative recording, adjust the source carefully, and avoid simply adding gain if peaks are already near clipping.
Audio is heard on only one side Stereo routing or a one-sided monitor connection Check source routing and the monitoring output; use Downmix to Mono where appropriate.
Unexpected desktop sounds or alerts appear Other audio sources are active in the OBS mix Inspect the Audio Mixer and disable or balance sources that are not part of the audiobook.
OBS sounds fine locally, but the YouTube preview does not Encoding, routing, or stream-path issue Check the YouTube preview and stream health, verify the intended stereo settings, and test again before the event.
