For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends a video bitrate of 50 Mbps with H.264 or 35 Mbps with H.265/HEVC. Set bitrate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. For SDR, use Rec. 709 at 8-bit. For HDR, YouTube’s guide specifies H.265 at 10-bit. Use RTMPS when available, and test the full setup before going live.
4K60 encoder settings at a glance
| Setting | H.264, SDR | H.265/HEVC, SDR |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 4K/2160p at 60 fps | 4K/2160p at 60 fps |
| Video bitrate | 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum |
| Bitrate control | CBR | CBR |
| Color space and depth | Rec. 709, 8-bit | Rec. 709, 8-bit |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations and minimums, not guarantees of a particular picture quality or proof that a given connection can sustain the stream. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a setting your connection can maintain. See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings for the platform guidance.
Choose H.264 or H.265
Use H.265 when the encoder supports it
YouTube’s recommended 4K60 ingest bitrate is lower for H.265 than for H.264: 35 Mbps versus 50 Mbps. That is a difference in YouTube’s recommendations, not a controlled comparison proving one codec looks better at the same bitrate or uses less encoder processing. Confirm that your encoder can output H.265 and that your workflow supports it before relying on it.

Set H.264 to 50 Mbps recommended, or no lower than YouTube’s listed 14 Mbps minimum. The minimum is not a recommended target for every scene or network; test at the actual resolution, frame rate, and content complexity you plan to stream.

Configure SDR and HDR correctly
SDR
For either codec in SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. Keep the signal format consistent through the source, encoder, and stream output to avoid unintended color shifts.
HDR
YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies H.265/HEVC and 10-bit depth. Do not treat an H.264 configuration as YouTube’s recommended HDR path. YouTube says to use H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR; HLS can be considered if an encoder does not yet support the relevant HDR capabilities over RTMP. The guide says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Set the shared encoder options
- Protocol: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Use RTMPS if your encoder offers it.
- Scan and pixels: YouTube’s advanced recommendations are progressive scan and square pixels.
- H.264 advanced options: YouTube lists two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. For stereo, its settings list 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, it lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps.
The audio figures and advanced encoder options are YouTube’s listed settings; whether every option is exposed depends on the encoder you use.
Set up and verify the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio’s live control room and create or select the live stream you intend to use. Copy its stream key into your encoder’s streaming destination settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Choose resolution handling. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to specify them manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under “Stream Resolution,” then select 2160p and 60 fps in the encoder.
- Enter the codec settings. Select H.264 or H.265 as appropriate, set CBR, enter the recommended bitrate from the table, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Configure SDR or HDR color and depth to match the source.
- Run a pre-event test. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and motion similar to the real event, not just a static image, and verify the stream health and any warnings in YouTube Studio.
- Monitor the live event. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while live. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, lower the output to a stable setting and test again rather than assuming the platform’s recommended bitrate will suit every connection.
One latency constraint matters for 4K: YouTube says the low-latency optimization option is unavailable for 4K/2160p streams, which are set to normal latency and optimized for quality.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems
YouTube reports unstable stream health
The encoder may be sending a bitrate your upload connection cannot sustain. Test upload capacity and stream at a reliably supportable quality; the listed minimum is not a guarantee that the stream will be stable.
The stream is not detected at the intended resolution or frame rate
Check the encoder output and YouTube’s resolution handling. Automatic detection is YouTube’s default recommendation; for manual selection, use a custom stream key with manual settings enabled under “Stream Resolution.”

- Turn Your Camera into a Pro Webcam: Connect your DSLR or mirrorless camera to any computer and go live in stunning quality
- Stunning quality: Stream and record in 1080p60 or even 4K60 for razor-sharp detail (Requires a compatible camera and the latest Cam Link 4K model)
- Connect More Than Just Cameras: Use a camcorder, action cam, or even your iPhone to level up your content
- No Lag, No Delays: Ultra-low latency keeps your video and audio perfectly in sync, just like it should be
- Your iPad, Now a Pro Field Monitor: Preview your shots in real time on an iPad with USB-C
HDR does not appear as expected
Verify that the output is H.265 at 10-bit and that the encoder and delivery protocol support the HDR capabilities you are using. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and mentions HLS as an option when those RTMP capabilities are unavailable in the encoder.

For 4K/2160p, YouTube does not offer the low-latency optimization setting in its cited guidance. The stream uses normal latency.
