Use FFmpeg’s transpose video filter to turn a property-tour image before scaling and encoding it, then send the output to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. First confirm the source’s actual orientation: rotating a video that is already upright will make it wrong, and rotation alone does not create both portrait and landscape feeds.

Decide the output orientation before building the command

A quarter-turn swaps the frame’s effective width and height. Choose the final canvas based on how viewers should see the tour, not just on the source file’s dimensions. Landscape can retain more of a wide room; portrait can make sense for a mobile-first composition. These are framing choices, not claims about YouTube’s recommendation performance.

  • If the source already displays correctly, do not add a rotation filter.
  • If it is sideways, determine whether it needs a clockwise or counterclockwise turn. Camera orientation and rotation metadata vary, so preview rather than assuming.
  • After rotation, decide whether to fit the image with padding, crop and reframe it, or use another deliberate composition. Avoid stretching a wide room into a narrow frame.

For a project that needs portrait and landscape simultaneously, plan and inspect two output compositions. One filtered FFmpeg output is one encoded feed in one orientation; a single rotation does not produce both.

Build a single-output FFmpeg command

FFmpeg’s official filter reference documents the transpose video filter. This adaptable example turns the video clockwise, fits it inside a portrait 1080×1920 canvas without stretching, and pads any unused space:

ffmpeg -i INPUT
  -vf "transpose=clock,scale=1080:1920:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1080:1920:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

Replace INPUT with the source file and the destination with the current ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube’s stream setup. The quoted destination is a pattern, not a real URL. Never publish or share a real stream key.

Adjust the filter for the footage

  • Use transpose=cclock for a counterclockwise quarter-turn; use transpose=clock for clockwise. Remove the filter if the source already appears upright.
  • Change 1080:1920 if the intended output canvas differs. To fill the canvas by cropping, use a deliberate crop/reframe strategy and inspect what is lost; the example instead fits and pads.
  • For a landscape output, set landscape dimensions and reconsider composition after rotation. A portrait camera shot may not suit a wide canvas without padding or reframing.
  • The example assumes the FFmpeg build includes libx264 and that the input has usable audio. Build options vary; this is not a tested or universally executable command.

For a more controlled setup, inspect the file with ffprobe, explicitly map the intended video and audio streams, then apply the video filter and set the output size and encoding. If audio and video come from separate inputs, supply both with -i and map each intentionally. If the video has no audio, add or map an appropriate audio input; YouTube’s stream health checks can flag missing audio.

A filter must decode and re-encode video. Do not combine rotation with -c:v copy, which stream-copies the encoded video instead of applying the transform.

Set YouTube ingest and encoder parameters

Use the current RTMPS address and stream name/key from YouTube Live Control Room or the relevant API stream resource; do not copy an endpoint or key from an example. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted ingest option. Its current encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. Select the video bitrate for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate:

Output Codec YouTube-recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps H.264 14 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 17 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 12 Mbps
720p at 30 or 60 fps H.264 8 Mbps
720p at 30 or 60 fps AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations from its current encoder settings page, not guarantees that a particular connection or source can sustain them. YouTube advises choosing a quality supported by a reliable upload connection and testing capacity. Stereo audio guidance is 128 Kbps at a 44.1 kHz sample rate.

For example, a 30 fps H.264 encode with a two-second GOP might use -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -g 60 alongside -c:v libx264; pair audio with -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 when appropriate. This is an illustrative starting point, not a universal setting or a validated command. Encoder behavior depends on the FFmpeg build, and CBR requires carefully configured rate control and VBV parameters. Check the actual stream health report rather than assuming the command is compliant.

Preview and test before the property tour

  1. Run the output privately or as a test before the scheduled event, using audio and camera movement representative of the live tour.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview: doors, windows, text, and room geometry should be upright; the aspect ratio should be intentional; important details should not be cropped; and audio should be present.
  3. Monitor stream health while the encoder is sending. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than relying only on command-line settings.
  4. If you need both orientations, verify each feed’s stream details and preview separately. YouTube’s vertical-live guidance describes encoder-controlled vertical output and a third-party dual-stream workflow, but interface options and availability can change; check the current Live Control Room rather than assuming a particular account has a dual-stream option.

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube’s Live Streaming API reports stream health and configuration issues, including missing audio, unsupported codec, high or low bitrate, bitrate starvation, frame-rate mismatch, long or mismatched GOP/keyframe spacing, and unsupported or suboptimal resolution. Use the reported issue to narrow the cause.

  • Picture is sideways or upside down: Remove the filter if the source is already correctly oriented, or reverse the transpose direction. Check rotation metadata and preview the output.
  • Picture is upright but badly cropped or padded: Revisit the post-rotation canvas dimensions and scale/pad/crop strategy. Reframe the room rather than stretching it.
  • Live Control Room flags bitrate or keyframes: Match the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and GOP interval to YouTube’s current guidance; inspect the health report after changing settings.
  • No feed arrives: Confirm the current ingest address and stream key, and verify that FFmpeg is running and delivering data. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
  • Audio is missing: Confirm the input contains audio or map a separate audio input, then check the output’s audio encoding and YouTube’s health status.
  • FFmpeg rejects the encoder or command: Check whether the installed build includes libx264 and whether your input streams match the command. The sample is a pattern, not a guarantee of build compatibility.

YouTube’s stream setup and health data distinguish ingestion settings such as address, resolution, and frame rate from the broadcast resource. For API-based workflows, use the current stream resource values rather than assuming the example destination is universal.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a prerecorded property tour live on YouTube rather than to process a camera feed in real time, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
