Use FFmpeg’s acrossfade audio filter to blend the end of one prerecorded episode into the beginning of the next. To broadcast that program on YouTube Live, you also need a continuous video stream, YouTube-compatible encoding, and a valid ingest URL and stream key. The filter does not configure the live connection by itself.

What you need before configuring the crossfade

  • FFmpeg installed on the computer that will encode and send the live program.
  • The episode files and their audio streams. Confirm filenames, stream layouts, and the order in which episodes should play.
  • A visual stream for the live program, such as a still image or video. The exact FFmpeg graph depends on that source and on the files’ formats and stream layouts.
  • A YouTube Live Control Room ingest URL and stream key. Keep the key private; do not paste it into a public command, screenshot, or log.

FFmpeg’s filter documentation describes acrossfade as applying a crossfade from one input audio stream to another. It handles the audio transition; YouTube’s ingest requirements apply to the finished encoded live output.

Choose the crossfade duration and behavior

acrossfade supports a duration, sample count, overlap setting, transition curves, and multiple inputs. The documented default is 44,100 samples, equivalent to one second at 44.1 kHz; do not assume that default suits every episode. When you specify a duration with d or duration, it takes precedence over the sample-count setting.

Option What it controls
d / duration How long the crossfade lasts; takes precedence over nb_samples when set.
nb_samples / ns Transition length in samples; documented default is 44,100 samples.
o / overlap Whether the first stream’s ending overlaps the second stream’s beginning; enabled by default. Set o=0 to disable overlap.
c1 and c2 / curve1 and curve2 Transition curves for the two streams. Curve types are described in FFmpeg’s afade filter documentation.
n / inputs Number of input streams to crossfade in sequence; defaults to two.

Pick a duration by listening to the material around the episode boundary. A short blend can preserve pace; a longer blend may suit music or ambient transitions. Preview the transition and adjust it rather than treating FFmpeg’s default as a podcast recommendation.

Test the audio filter on two episodes

Start with a file-to-file test before building the live output. FFmpeg documents this example:

ffmpeg -i first.flac -i second.flac -filter_complex acrossfade=d=10:c1=exp:c2=exp output.flac

This example crossfades two FLAC inputs over ten seconds with exponential curves and writes an audio file. It is not a YouTube Live command. Replace the example filenames and output as appropriate, and listen through the transition to check that the handoff sounds right.

For a non-overlapping transition, FFmpeg documents the o=0 option. For three inputs, its documentation shows using n=3 to chain crossfades in sequence. For example, the filter portion can be written as acrossfade=n=3; the complete command still has to identify all inputs and route the audio correctly. Consult FFmpeg’s filter documentation for the current option syntax and curve types.

Connect the finished program to YouTube Live

Build the complete FFmpeg output around your actual files and visual source. The audio filtergraph must receive the episode audio streams in sequence, while the output must also include the video stream and encode the combined program for YouTube. Because input containers, audio stream layouts, and visual sources differ, there is no single safe command that fits every setup.

  1. Get the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the server URL and stream key for the broadcast. Keep the key secret.
  2. Choose the protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. Its RTMPS guidance requires a valid protocol, server endpoint, and path; the connection uses port 443. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
  3. Route the audio. Apply acrossfade to the episode audio inputs and map the filtered audio into the encoded output. Confirm the mapping against the actual input streams; do not assume every file has the same layout.
  4. Set output encoding. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings for your intended codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio layout. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant-bitrate encoding.
  5. Use an appropriate keyframe interval and bitrate. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder page provides resolution-dependent bitrate recommendations; choose the row for your intended codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate to all streams.
  6. Send the stream key securely. Use the Live Control Room’s stream key as the ingest credential, and avoid exposing it in material others can access.

For stereo, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 44.1 kHz audio and 128 kbps. For 5.1, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only for AAC. Check the current YouTube guidance for the output you intend to send, since those settings are not interchangeable across audio layouts.

Test and monitor before and during the broadcast

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. Before relying on a setup for an event, test it with audio and movement representative of the planned broadcast, then check stream health and review any messages in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder settings recommend testing before the event and monitoring stream health during it.

When HLS is appropriate

HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion option, not an extra setting to combine casually with an RTMPS command. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance calls for TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segment durations between one and four seconds. YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream. Use HLS only when your encoder and delivery setup meet those requirements.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

  • The transition is abrupt or sounds wrong: Preview the boundary and adjust the crossfade duration or curves. Confirm that the filter receives the intended audio streams and that the episode order is correct.
  • The transition is much longer or shorter than expected: Check whether you set d or duration; when set, it overrides nb_samples. If neither is set, FFmpeg documents a default of 44,100 samples.
  • The second episode does not join as expected: Check the input count and filtergraph. For multiple episodes, use the documented inputs option and make sure the graph accounts for every audio input.
  • YouTube does not accept the connection: Verify the RTMPS endpoint, path, and stream key from Live Control Room. Confirm the protocol and port requirements in Google’s RTMPS guide.
  • YouTube reports stream-health issues: Check the encoder output against the current YouTube settings for codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and audio layout. Use the health messages and test with representative audio and movement to narrow down the issue.
  • The stream is more delayed than expected: If you chose HLS, its segment-based delivery has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream according to YouTube. Reconsider the protocol if low latency matters and RTMPS fits your setup.
